In recent years, artificial intelligence has played an important role in education, wherein one of the most commonly used applications is forecasting students’ academic performance based on personal information such as social status, income, address, etc. This study proposes and develops an artificial neural network model capable of determining whether a student will pass a certain class without using personal or sensitive information that may compromise student privacy. For model training, we used information regarding 32,000 students collected from The Open University of the United Kingdom, such as number of times they took the course, average number of evaluations, course pass rate, average use of virtual materials per date and number of clicks in virtual classrooms. Attributes selected for the model are as follows: 93.81% accuracy, 94.15% precision, 95.13% recall, and 94.64% F1-sco...

The present research is part of the project called PHUKUY, which is a low-cost portable digital spirometer prototype designed for remote monitoring of patients with COPD and COVID-19. It also includes additional sensors for improved patient monitoring. This article presents the development of the spirometry module. A turbine spirometer was chosen for its small and lightweight size, easy cleaning and maintenance, and low-cost implementation, which allows for portability. The airflow was successfully digitized, and its direction was detected using a microcontroller, a pair of IR receivers and emitters. This information was then sent via Bluetooth to be displayed in real-Time on a mobile phone. For a 3-liter calibration, a maximum error of ±0.115 liters and a standard deviation of 0.051 were achieved.

Since 1960, a higher percentage of aquatic foods have been allocated for human consumption. In 2020, 89% of global fishery and aquaculture production was dedicated to this purpose. With the increasing demand in the industry, there has also been a development of quality and food safety standards. Therefore, the food preservation technique of refrigeration becomes essential to prevent input losses and maintain quality. This leads to the need for appropriate technology for the freezing process of aquatic foods on vessels. In this research, the study and consequently, the design of a swirl effect atomizer using tools based on mathematical models and complemented with numerical simulation (Ansys CFD: Computational Fluid Dynamics) is proposed. This cryogenic atomizer, in conjunction with another water atomizer, would produce ice in the form of tiny particles. This would increase the efficiency...

The demand for high-pressure, operational cryogenic fluid storage systems in specialized laboratories has driven the design of an innovative solution due to the scarcity of specialized equipment in the local market. This article details the design and manufacturing of a portable, long-lasting cryogenic fluid storage tank that meets safety and efficiency requirements, while also facilitating individual cryogenic tests. By applying Pascal’s principle, an effective increase in the pressure of the cryogenic fluid was achieved, which is essential for supplying the system at pressure. The tank incorporates specific inputs and outputs, including an additional input for high-pressure air injection, a safety valve, and a pressure measurement port, highlighting its functionality and autonomy in individual operations. The integration of these features has been validated through simulations and em...

The respiratory frequency monitoring is essential in medical environments to assess the lung health of patients. This work introduces a low-cost device designed to measure respiratory frequency in an automated manner and detect potential anomalies. The device provides accurate measurements, freeing medical staff from manual tasks. In addition to its application in hospitals, the device is proposed as a valuable tool for home sleep monitoring, opening new possibilities for the early detection of conditions such as sleep apnea. It also allows for remote data transmission and integration with mobile devices. The respiratory signal was successfully compressed without losing its key characteristics, achieving a compression rate of over 95% and facilitating storage and processing. In summary, this device aims to enhance efficiency in respiratory frequency monitoring, offering a low-cost soluti...

The contamination of seafood by common bacteria and the ecological limitations of antibacterials has prompted the investigation of the phytochemical profile and antimicrobial activity of aqueous garlic extract (Allium sativum L.) against four significant food-associated pathogens: Salmonella typhi, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Absorbance curves were constructed, inhibition halos were measured, and minimum lethal concentrations were determined. This study aims to harness the properties of garlic and its derivatives, making them ideal for use in pharmaceutical and industrial products. The results showed greater inhibitory activity against Gram-positive bacteria compared to Gram-negative bacteria. Specifically, a concentration of 0.125 g/ml of the extract produced inhibition halos with diameters of 0.75 mm for S. typhi, 0.8 mm for M. luteus, 11 mm for S. ...
