MAX phase thin films have been synthesized by thermal treatment of a Ti-Al-C multilayer system. The preparation of the multilayer system was carried out via magnetron sputtering. Based on the thickness ratio among the individual nanoscale monolayers (Ti, Al, C), the resulting MAX phase stoichiometry can be controlled. This paper describes the synthesis of both Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 MAX phases from the same precursor multilayer system which is composed of a sequence of Ti/Al/C pure elemental single layers with thicknesses of 14, 6, and 3.5 nm, respectively. This sequence is repeated 22 times with a total thickness of around 500 nm. Rapid thermal treatment tests were performed to study the phase development. The Ti2AlC MAX phase forms in a temperature range below 850 °C, whereas the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase starts to form at temperatures above 850 °C and reaches its highest phase purity at 950 °C...

This work proposes a computational algorithm which extracts the frequency, timings and signal segments corresponding to respiratory phases, through buccal and nasal acoustic signal processing. The proposal offers a computational solution for medical applications which require on-site or remote patient monitoring and evaluation of pulmonary pathologies, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The state of the art presents a few respiratory evaluation proposals through buccal and nasal acoustic signals. Most proposals focus on respiratory signals acquired by a medical professional, using stethoscopes and electrodes located on the thorax. In this case the signal acquisition process is carried out through the use of a low cost and easy to use mask, which is equipped with strategically positioned and connected electret microphones, to maximize the proposed algorithm's performance. The al...

MAX phase thin films can be fabricated through firstly depositing a precursor thin film consisting of the initial elements M, A, and X close to the MAX phase stoichiometry employing physical vapor deposition techniques with a subsequent thermal annealing process. This work presents different deposition configurations (multilayer and co-sputtering) for the fabrication of the Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 MAX phase thin films by magnetron sputtering from three elemental targets (Ti, Al, and C). It was found that the depositions followed mainly amorphous thus the MAX phase was not able to form. By implementing the deposition parameters such as temperature and substrate voltage, the deposition morphology could be tailored to crystalline and MAX phases could be created. Moreover, Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 nanostructured MAX phase thin films were fabricated by magnetron sputtering with three elemental targets (...

This dissertation investigates the potential improvement of volcanic eruption understanding and forecasting methods by using advanced data processing techniques to analyze large datasets at three target volcanoes (Piton de la Fournaise (PdlF) (France), Sabancaya, and Ubinas (Peru)). The central objective of this study is to search for possible empirical relationships between the pre-eruptive behavior of the accelerated increase in seismic activity using the Failure Forecast Method (FFM) and velocity variations measured by Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI), since both observations are reported to be independently associated with medium damage. The FFM is a deterministic method used to forecast volcanic eruptions using an empirical relationship of increased and accelerated evolution of an observable (e.g., volcano-seismic event rates). The event rates used with FFM in this study were generate...

Geophysical studies oriented to characterization play a very important role in providing a better understanding of the internal structure of the earth and specifically of a new study area and consequently being able to map its properties, its characteristics and the effects generated by the processes of geological alteration. This will finally generate a better geological - geophysical interpretation in the new study zone. In this research work the chargeability data registered in the time domain is being used, firstly the values registered through the 20 windows sampled in time are used and this decay curve obtained is the one used to determine the function transfer that expresses the behavior of the subsoil when applying a current and observing its chargeability. This transfer function is then used, and the Fourier transform is applied to decompose this new signal into its spectral val...

The purpose of this work is to implement an algorithm to identify the seismic waves parameters: P phase, S phase, amplitude, period and duration. For this, digital signal processing and the programming language Matlab will be applied to perform the automatic reading of seismic signal parameters. As mathematical tools, the discrete Fourier transform (fft) to study the frecuency components of the signal and the Hilbert transform to obtain the envelope signal, will be used. A graphical user interface in Matlab was designed and implemented for reading (with functions of automatic reading or manual reading) seismic signals with three components. In this way, it makes easy the routine of reading the seismic signals within a great set. The results of the automatic algorithm agree with that of a manual operator for a great Signal/Noise ratio.
