The objectives of the study were to determine the psychometric properties of the Scale of Attitudes towards Statistics in Mexico. In this instrumental study, a non-probabilistic sample of 383 Mexican psychology students who responded to two attitude scales was analyzed. The bifactor model with three specific factors (safety, pleasure-usefulness, and motivation) showed the best properties of fit and convergent validity. The average attitude was neutral and more positive in men than in women. The general factor had a high correlation with attitude towards research. It is concluded that the three-factor bifactor model represents the relationship between the items better than the original five-factor model.

The UPPS-P scale is widely used to assess impulsivity. For this reason, the psychometric properties of the extensive version of UPPS-P were analyzed from the Rasch polytomous model. Eight hundred Argentine adolescents aged 12 to 18 years participated in the study. As a result, it was found that the dimensions of the UPPS-P presented an adequate fit to the Rasch model, adequate levels in the Person Separation Index (PSI), some items with local dependence and an adequate level of unidimensionality. It is concluded that the scale is a valid instrument to assess impulsivity in adolescents; therefore, a conversion table with interval scores is presented to increase the measurement precision of the instrument.

The use of small-scale physical models is a key tool in coastal engineering for representing phenomena such as wave propagation and the effects of coastal structures in breaking zones. This study presents the design and construction of a small-scale physical model applied to Playa Carpayo, located on the coast of Callao, Peru. Vertical and horizontal hydraulic similarity scales of 1:16.7 and 1:180.5, respectively, were used based on Froude similarity, with base maps generated from satellite imagery (Google Earth) and bathymetric data (NAVIONICS and DIHIDRONAV). The model was built in the wave-generating channel of the Laboratory of Hydraulics and Physical Models at EPIMF-FCF-UNMSM, allowing the simulation of wave transformation between T- and L-shaped groynes. Measurements were taken at two representative points: 100 m and 50 m from the prototype shoreline, recording significant wave...

Personality tests are used regularly as a requirement within many sectors in Brazil, including education, human resources, and transportation. The Personality Factor Inventory, based on Murray’s system of needs theory, is one of the widely used tools within Brazil. Despite its importance, its results are only partially related to the Big Five theory, which is the predominant framework for understanding personality. This theoretical divergence poses practical challenges for professionals who rely on or are required to work within the Big Five model. Harmonizing these two theories could enhance their practical utility. In this study, we evaluate the possibility of fitting Murray’s personality theory within the Big Five framework using Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling and invariance tests (i.e., gender) using data from 272 845 participants in Brazil (56.2% men, M age 21.74 ± 15...

We describe the process by which items of a belief scale in obesity and bariatric surgery were generated using mixed methods. Participants were 22 Ecuadorian bariatric patients between 22 and 50 years old (M = 37.5, SD= 8.91). A semi-structured interview was constructed, validated, and conducted. The information was analyzed using directed content analysis, guided by the Health Belief Model. The beliefs varied according to sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, particularly age, sex, surgical technique, and postoperative evolution. The level of susceptibility, severity and benefits were mainly associated with the consequences of the loss of psychological well-being and social acceptance. Meanwhile, a greater perception of barriers was found in women, people who experienced negative emotions and those with less social support.

Higher education sectors have experienced high levels of competence. In this scenario, some universities have responded through the offer of studies in non-traditional modality (distance). Various scales have been proposed to measure the quality of service in higher education, but few studies have focused on distance modality (non-traditional modality). This is relevant, since distance higher education has characteristics that differentiate it from higher education in traditional modality (presential). Given this, this research focuses on the proposal, development and validation of a scale of service quality measurement in distance higher education, which is called “Distance Higher Education Service Quality Service” (DIHESQ). A three-stage methodology is applied. First, the DIHESQ measurement scale is proposed ensuring its content validity, later the analysis of unidimensionality is ...

Most evaluation activities involve classifying students into categories. Especially in high-stakes assessments, such classification carries significant responsibility due to the ensuing consequences. Raw scores do not reflect the nature of measurement error or its implications for student classification. In contrast, the Rasch model offers an approach based on the relationship between the probability of answering an item correctly and the difference between the student’s ability and the item’s difficulty, an approach that allows for the calculation of standard errors associated with item and person measures. Within this framework, this study aims to investigate whether concentrating items around a cutoff point improves classification accuracy, measured using Rudner’s accuracy index. This relationship was examined under three scenarios with varying levels of student dispersion. The ...

The overlap between depression and anxiety is a widely-replicated finding in mental health research. The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales (DASS-21) were developed to maximize the discrimination between these constructs. However, research suggests that DASS-21 predominantly measure an overall factor of emotional distress. In this study, DASS-21 were translated and applied to 353 university students (Mage = 20.42; 61% women) from Lima, Peru. The confirmatory factorial analysis supported a bifactor model, but additional analyses revealed that the data were essentially one-dimensional. Moreover, when the items were subjected to a bifactor exploratory analysis, some did not load into their original specific factors. The conclusion was that DASS-21 must be interpreted as a global dimension of emotional distress.

This study proposed the design of three brief scales coherent with and contributing to the pedagogical perspective of schoolteachers, aiming to enhance self-regulated learning and psychological well-being of students. With the participation of teachers and other professionals who provided feedback throughout the process, scales for school motivation (ME), frustration tolerance (TF), and school satisfaction (SE) were designed and validated among 1260 students from 7th to 12th grade (57.7% female, mean age M=14.9 years, SD=1.9) belonging to three educational institutions in northern Chile. Descriptive, correlational, reliability, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) measures obtained indicated adequate psychometric behavior in all scales. As a result of the validation process, the report indicates that the instruments meet psychometric criteria for application in the school context and c...
