This investigation is a study aimed at assessing posture and evaluating the risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSI) in upper limbs of mechanical engineering students at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana in Quito, Ecuador. Through a descriptive study of ten students with an average age of 19.8 ±1.23 years and average drill-use experience of 1.9 ±1.3 months, ergonomic risk was assessed using REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment), RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment), and OCRA (Occupational Repetitive Action) Checklist methods. Previously, Harris and Edinburgh tests were used to evaluate laterality, which resulted in a 100% consistently left-handed population (p<0.05). Upper limb joint angles were measured using photometry and the free software Ruler, establishing a database for ergonomic risk assessment. Next, Pearson’s correlation was used to compare the operator’s laterality wit...

The general objective of the study was to determine the influence of occupational risk prevention management on the perception of the safety climate in the workers of an SME in the construction sector. It was carried out from the quantitative perspective, with a non-experimental design and explanatory level, for which two ad hoc questionnaires related to each of the variables were applied to a census sample of 20 workers of the organization. The results obtained showed that occupational risk prevention management positively influences the perception of the safety climate in the company's workers (Spearman's Rho coefficient = 0.737 and p<0.05 value). Consequently, it was concluded that the actions carried out by the company in terms of the control of risks and accidents in the workplace have an impact on the perception of workers in terms of safety management, the safety system against...

Cerebrovascular disorders remain the leading cause of neurological morbidity and mortality in the world, representing one of the pathological entities responsible for the greatest burden of disease worldwide. Carotid atherosclerosis or stenosis is a potential risk factor for ischemic stroke. The identification and strict follow-up of this condition are essential in the secondary prevention of complications through primary care and the specialized treatment of cardiometabolicrisk. However, depending on this risk and/or presence of symptoms, definitive treatment is necessary. Currently, there is controversy as to whether asymptomatic carotid stenosis is better to be treated medically or surgically. Consideringthe significance of such entity, this review aims to analyze recent evidence on the risk of ischemic stroke in the case of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis among adults, as well a...

The elderly, often frail, are patients susceptible to numerous complications, both immediate and in the short, medium and long term, following surgical interventions. Depending on their comorbidities, a comprehensive approach should be taken to achieve the best condition of the organs prior to surgery and attempt to maintain it during and after the intervention. Considering the statistical strength of negative outcomes, specifically mortality in elderly patients undergoing major surgery, is truly a challenge. This even extends to other fields such as bioethics, raising a dilemma about dysthanasia when resorting to certain risky interventions in those with a fearful life prognosis. Recently, interesting evidence estimating the incidence, mortality risk and factors associated with negative outcomes in elderly patients undergoing major surgery has been published, suggesting possible modific...

Preoperative tests are very common in daily clinical practice. However, ordering preoperative tests is not generally based on the best scientific evidence. When preoperative tests are ordered without justification, they may generate false-positive results, cause to repeat or order new tests and consultations, prolong hospital stay, result in problems to the patient (more risks, confusion and anxiety), and increase costs. A systematic review and cost-effectiveness analysis of preoperative tests for the most frequent low- and intermediate-risk non-cardiac elective surgeries performed at the Hospital Regional Lambayeque were conducted. According to the cost-effectiveness analysis, the annual cost of unnecessary preoperative tests amounts to S/ 62,778.00. However, if preoperative tests were adequately ordered and NICE guidelines were followed, their cost would decrease in 38.34 % (i.e., S/ 1...

This paper seeks to explain how companies can apply risk management from an operational approach and the necessary guidelines to carry out an efficient management of it (Bromiley et al., 2015). Therefore, we first work out the risk in operations and explain the types of events, the factors that cause it, and details measurement tools such as severity. Then, the theory about management standards related to risk management, such as iso 37001, iso 31000 and COSO, in their latest versions, is reviewed. The research paper proposes an application in the area of risks, through a proposal of a general risk scheme and a structure of risk management for organizations. Finally, new aspects are developed to consider the case of cybernetic risk.
