In the year 2000, 189 nations of the world formulated the plan called "Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)" and came together to face the future that had to do with famines, droughts, wars, plagues, poverty and chronic problems in the world. It was known that we had enough food to feed the world, but that it was not being shared; that they had medicines for HIV and for other diseases, but they were very expensive; that earthquakes and floods were inevitable, but not the high number of deaths. Ambitious plans were made, as to eradicate them in a few years. The agreement of the nations for the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) 1 arises in 2015.

The present research work evaluated the results of 390 serum samples collected to birds reared in commercial farms (broilers, egg-laying hens, and breeders) and 343 serum samples collected to birds reared in non-technical farms (backyard and fighting birds) that were analyzed by the hemoagglutination inhibition (HI) test for the Newcastle disease (ND). Samples were collected by the SENASA (national authority for animal health) as part of a national serological survey in the second semester of year 2001. An interpretation table for the results of the HI test was designed by a team of experts taking into consideration the number and type of vaccines against ND used. The prevalence rate of birds with antibody titers compatible to a Newcastle virus challenge was 1.8 ± 1.3% in birds from commercial farms and 9.9 ± 3.2% in birds from non-technical farms. The logistic regression analysis show...

The aim of this study was to determine the programmes of parasite and sanitary control and knowledge of the parasite diseases that affect dogs and cats of 306 owners of the city of Escárcega, state of Campeche, Mexico. The total number of pets was 590 dogs and 149 cats. Each household has an average of 1.92 dogs or 0.48 cats with ages of 2.9 and 2.8 years, respectively. Most owners of dogs (30.8%) and cats (25.6%) apply some anthelmintic treatment twice a year. The frequency of treatments against ectoparasites in dogs and cats is carried out mostly four times a year or when their presence is detected. Gastrointestinal parasites are poorly known, and scabies is the most mentioned disease. Most owners of dogs (85.6%) and cats (93%) are unaware of the meaning of zoonosis and that their pets can transmit diseases to them, suggesting its low impact on health management in pets. Macrocyclic l...
