Degenerative joint disease (DJD) is a non-inflammatory pathology and characterized to be progressive, structural, and functional. The transforming growth factor Beta 1 (TGF-β1) is a regulatory cytokine participating in the production and deposition of extracellular matrix in various tissues, including joint cartilage. The aim of the present study was to compare the concentrations of transforming growth factor β1 in canine synovial fluid with (n=12) and without DJD (n=11), determined by an ELISA test. The mean concentration of TGB-β1 in dogs without DJD was 16.8 ± 7.1 ng/ml, while in dogs with DJD it was 10.3 ± 3.5 ng/ml (p <0.05).

A retrospective study of musculoskeletal pathologies in dogs was carried out at the German Kleintierklinik Veterinary Center in the city of San Pedro de la Paz, Chile, in the period September 2014 - June 2017. Of the total of 2000 clinical files analysed, 144 were related to patients with a problem in the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal pathologies with the highest incidence were fractures (40, 27.8%), patellar dislocation (31, 21.5%), rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (25, 17.4%) and hip dysplasia (23, 15.8%). Males, purebreds, and adults were significantly more affected by musculoskeletal pathologies.

Hip dysplasia can be defined as a joint incongruity between the femoral head and the acetabulum, which usually develops to degenerative joint disease (DJD), with signs of chronic pain. A surgical option to reduce pain in patients with EDA is the pericapsular denervation of the hip joint. In the present study, this technique was performed through a minimally invasive approach in 10 German Shepherd dogs diagnosed with hip dysplasia and EDA through an orthopedic examination and radiographic imaging. To assess the efficacy of the technique a pain scale was applied in the pre-surgical on days 5, 10 and 15 post-surgery. The results showed an effective decrease of pain between days 0 and 15 and between days 5 and 15. Also, a favorable perception was evidenced by the owners, where six of them indicated that the surgery proved to be satisfactory and the others four indicated that the surgery was ...

The diagnosis of ovine brucellosis in Chile is based on clinical examination of the testicles and confirmed with a serological test, being the complement fixation test, agar gel immunodiffusion test and the indirect ELISA the most used. The present study was carried out in the Municipality of San Ignacio, VIII Chilean region in 40 rams with the aim of comparing two diagnostic tools: testicular palpation and indirect ELISA for the antibody detection against Brucella ovis. The results showed 12 (30%) rams positive to testicular palpation and 5 rams (12.5%) positive to ELISA, where the level of agreement between the two diagnostic tests was poor (k=0.0714). Positive rams to brucellosis based on testicular palpation are not necessarily infected with B. ovis.
