Observers have expressed concern that Chinese mining companies operating in Latin America are violating labor and environmental standards to a greater extent than other foreign mining companies. Critics point to one operation in particular –Shougang Hierro Peru– as evidence of China’s threat to Latin America’s workers and environment. Indeed, Shougang has experienced a far higher rate of strikes than other foreign firms. Many observers have assumed that Shougang’s strike problem stems from an inevitable culture clash between Peruvian unions and Chinese management. In fact, union relations remained positive for years, until Shougang lost funding when its parent company suffered a crisis back in China in 1995. I argue that the strike problem stems largely from Shougang’s response to its 1995 funding crisis: it burnt its bridges with the unions to save money. S...

In recent decades, disciplinary studies on political science in Latin America have expanded rapidly. However, national case studies still predominate, and comparative analyses have only begun to emerge. The Peruvian case has received little attention in this literature and is rarely included in comparative studies, despite the discipline undergoing significant transformations in recent decades in this country. This article aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of the development and current state of political science in Peru from a comparative perspective, to situate it more precisely on the Latin American map while highlighting its particularities and challenges. After reviewing existing findings and offering a critical balance of prior research focused on political science in Peru, the article situates the case comparatively, exploring similarities and differences with other c...

Little by little, corporate social responsibility has been consolidated in the Latin American region. As a consequence, it has become an effective mechanism to reduce costs and strengthen market share in the medium term for some companies. Although there are more initiatives, experiences and foundations of social responsibility, even its application in accordance with the institutional policy is weak. Faced with this, the authors emphasize the proper application of CSR analysis methodological instruments with the aim of consolidating parameters that consolidate experiences at an international level. In this way, the objective of this article is focused on making a methodological and casuistic contribution on the assessment of CSR practices by analyzing the cases of commercial banks in Peru and Brazil in the field of labor rights, environmental issues and relationships with consumers. On ...

This article shows a comparison of confirmed cases and death from Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), among South American countries, considering cases per million inhabitants and standardizing the time of infection, from the day of confirmation of case zero to each country. The objective is to more uniformly evaluate the spread of this virus and thus evaluate the result of the measures taken by governments against COVID-19, since various research centers show comparisons without taking into account the proportion of inhabitants, nor the time (days) of contagion between countries. In addition, we provide short-term predictions and an estimate of the end of confirmed cases in the most affected countries.

Objective: To evaluate and compare atherogenic indices in women with idiopathic Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (pPROM) and gestational age matched healthy pregnant controls. Material and methods: In the Departments of Biochemistry and Obstetrics & Gynecology at UCMS & GTBH-Delhi, a cross-sectional comparative pilot study was carried out from August 2023 to July 2024. The study comprised 60 participants: 30 women with idiopathic pPROM (26-34 weeks gestation) and 30 controls with uncomplicated pregnancies who were matched for gestational age. We computed the following atherogenic indices: non-HDL-C, Lipoprotein Combined Index (LCI), LDL-C/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, Atherogenic Coefficient (AC) and Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) and analysed the data. Results: HDL-C levels were lower in idiopathic pPROM group. TC, TG, and LDL-C levels were higher in cases of idiopathic pPROM group....

Introduction: This article summarizes the clinical practice guide (CPG) for the diagnosis and management of cholelithiasis, acute cholecystitis and choledocholithiasis in the Peruvian Social Security (EsSalud). Objective: To provide clinical recommendations based on evidence for the management of patients with cholelithiasis, acute cholecystitis and choledocholithiasis in EsSalud. Methods: a guideline task force (GTF) was formed with internists, general surgeons, gastroenterologists, and methodologists. The group proposed 10 clinical questions to be answered in this Clinical practice guideline (CPG). Systematic searches of preview reviews were performed and when it was necessary, primary studies from PubMed and CENTRAL during 2017 were reviewed. The evidence was selected aiming to answer each proposed question. Certainty of evidence was evaluated using Grading of Recommendations Assessme...

The category of welfare regime has been applied in critical contributions to the study of protection schemes in Latin American countries. This article reviews early debates in which this category was employed in the European context, and the transition to its application by Latin American researchers to study the cases of their own countries. The manner in which the perspective of welfare regimes and related conceptual tools were adapted to propose regional and local analyses of Latin America is also discussed. Starting with an analysis of how the Argentine case was understood, the approaches that characterized the regimes of the region as hybrid, incomplete, or embryonic are then analyzed and some possible vectors for a critical update are proposed. The theoretical review takes into account the considerable existing bibliography on Latin American welfare regimes.

This research was aimed at determining to what extent factors prior to university admission, motivational factors, and institutional experiences explain the academic persistence of students in the University Leveling Term (CIU) at the Simon Bolivar University - Coastal Campus. An explanatory-type quantitative study was proposed, which involved a non-experimental cross-sectional retrospective causal relationship design. The sample consisted of 101 students (50.5% female) with an average age of 17.90 years (SD = 2.37). The study found a significant relationship between some variables explaining academic persistence, which were: a) having a lower orientation toward academic goals; b) a higher score on the maladaptive pattern; c) a higher score in the perception of the Mathematics professor’s evaluation; and d) a higher score in the final performance. This set of variables explains 56.4% o...

This paper sets out to identify the main differences and simmilarities between the Stabilization Plans of Argentina, Brazil, and Perú, as well as making some remarks on anti-inflationary policies. The author also analyzes the initial success of these programmes in terms of their handling of inflation and its subsequent regression. It concludes that the greatest and most important potential cost of a stabilization programme can be measured in terms of its impact on the economic activity, and the levels of employment that it genders. Heterodox plans have not had these costs while achieving a "relative stabilization", but have. on the contrary, managed to increase production. Contrarily, the orthodox alternative tums out to be very costly in the case ofrebellious inflation, since it does not act directly over the inertia.

The protection of animals is one of the increasingly intense concerns in various parts of the world that is reflected in the legislative and jurisprudential production of States. In this sense, the aim of this research was to analyse the criteria that have been developed in the legislation and in the reflection of the justice administration bodies of Latin American and European countries. It was identified that there are innovative criteria that allow assigning animals the quality of sentient beings and in some cases as subjects of law, which allows expanding the scope of protection in favor of them.

This paper evaluates the performance of process capability indices, PCI in non-normal situations percentiles using the methods of Clements (CCP CCpk) and Burr (BCP BCpk). Although the PCI is used in industry, there is insuffi cient literature to determine their accuracy by taking into account moderate and severe deviations of the normality. To study these deviations, it performs a comparison of both methods considering simulated data distributions with the Weibull, Lognormal, Beta and Generalized Pareto, GP. In calculating the PCI the CCpk generates smaller deviations with the Weibull distribution, whereas that the BCpk, deviations are higher. On the other side with each distribution the BCP generates lower average deviation from the CCP. Finally a real case considering the distribution GP.

As is known from the 80s of last century wave of democratization swept Latin America. The various dictatorships that time concluded. In most cases because the military government left power in International convened a constituent assembly as in Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and Chile, or are returned to the previous constitution as happened in the Uruguay reestablished the presidential Cons.. titution of 1966. Mexico and Argentina also did the same. Instead Venezuela and Colombia, who suffered no coups kept their constitutions. However they would be modified. In the case of Venezuela when Chavez was elected President and the Colombian government's decision then. The change of the Colombian Constitution was exemplary because it was linked to the use of direct democracy with double effect. First, a referendum was held to ask the people whether he was in favor of a new constitution and, after the p...

Social representations of justice of Colombian students enrolled from second grade of primary school to the last year of secondary schooling were analyzed. the level of structuring of these representations was established and their similarities and differences were identified according to the school grade and socioeconomic level. From a structural perspective, a word association technique was administered to 950 participants (481 girls and 469 boys) with the term justice inducer. The results showed that there are differences in the structure of the representation of justice depending on the socioeconomic stratum. All students have an ideal of justice that is opposed by negative elements which, in the case of official schools, are linked to violence and revenge while in private schools they are related to corruption. The representation of justice of students from private schools is more c...
