Cedecea lapagei is a gram-negative, non-encapsulated, facultative anaerobic bacterium that has been reported in only a few cases with varying clinical presentations, drug susceptibility, and treatment since its first isolation in 1981. This study aimed to describe a case report of C. lapagei in Peru and systematically review the documented case reports of individuals infected with C. lapagei. A 59-year-old man who had become bedridden with Parkinson’s disease and had epilepsy presented with a 1-week history of fever and sore throat and was admitted. Physical examination revealed an obtundation state and abolished vesicular murmur in the right hemithorax. During hospitalization, the patient was diagnosed with various infections, including tuberculosis, for which he received broad-spectrum antibiotics. In the absence of clinical improvement, a urine culture was performed showing C. lapag...

We present the case of a 5-year-old male patient with a medical history of recurrent bronchospasms since 3 months . He went to the pediatric allergy clinic at the Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital with his mother, who reported episodes of acute urticaria, one after consuming cooked pork and another 2 after consuming cooked beef. To the evaluation, non-contributory exam. The following tests were performed: specific IgE in vitro, where a positive result was obtained for pork albumin (26.6 KUA/L) and later skin tests, with a positive result for raw pork. Due to the appearance of lesions only after the consumption of cooked mammalian meat, alpha-gal syndrome was suspected and specific IgE testing against alpha-gal was requested through an external laboratory, which came back positive (>100 kU/L).

Observers have expressed concern that Chinese mining  companies operating  in Latin America are violating  labor and environmental standards to a greater extent than other foreign mining companies. Critics point to one operation in particular  –Shougang Hierro  Peru– as evidence of China’s threat to Latin America’s workers and environment. Indeed, Shougang has experienced a far higher rate of strikes than other foreign firms. Many observers have assumed that Shougang’s strike problem stems from an inevitable culture clash between Peruvian unions and Chinese management. In fact, union relations remained positive for years, until Shougang lost funding when its parent company suffered a crisis back in China in 1995. I argue that the strike problem stems largely from Shougang’s response to its 1995 funding crisis: it burnt its bridges with the unions to save money. S...

In this study, we used data from the Young Lives study, which investigates teenage childbearing, marriage, and cohabitation by tracking a cohort of individuals from the ages of 8 to 19 years. While the present analysis does not intend to establish causality, the longitudinal nature of the data allows us to identify the combination of early circumstances and life changes that induce a higher likelihood of these events. The analysis addresses bias due both to reverse causality and to community characteristics that are usually unobserved and fixed over time, a strategy that is quite unique in studies of developing countries. About 1 out of 5 females (and 1 out of 20 males) in our sample had at least one child by the age of 19, and 80 percent of them were married or cohabiting. Early marriage/cohabitation is indeed intrinsically related to early pregnancy and largely predicted by the same fa...

Foodborne diseases (FBD) represent an impact on public health, since they are responsible for the increase in mortality and morbidity rates, generating greater negative effects in low and middle-income countries. This manuscript reports a FBD outbreak in the Callao region, Peru, which affected 33 people with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms. These cases call for epidemiological surveillance in health centers in order to determine the pathogen and generate an efficient treatment.

The consolidation of the literary field in our country arose with the literary histories at the beginning of the 20th century. These studies are precisely the ones that will define or refute the canon up to our time. In this sense, the police narrative always occupied a marginal, but not invisible, place, which is why it is necessary to periodize its formation and reception. This paper places Vallejo in the center of the debate, because, first, it studies the context of Peruvian narrative at the beginning of the twentieth century and, specifically, the position of the police genre; second, the research will expose the characteristics that some of the stories of Escalas have to be classified as police narrative.

Since recent times the "problem" of writing in Quechua is once again on the table and this is due to the fact that indigenous education is also taking a different course given the progress, albeit slowly increasing, of educational experiences that make use of this language as a vehicle of education. At the moment, these experiences are only aimed at the vernacular-speaking rural population and, unfortunately, there are still no attempts at Quechua-Spanish education for the bilingual or monolingual Spanish-speaking urban population. This distinction seems important to us in the discussion that we will develop, since it is closely linked to the use of the Quechua alphabet.

The case of 9 patients reported in the context of the health alert due to the increase in cases of Monkeypox virus infection in the world in non-endemic countries is presented. It is important to know in a practical way the most important epidemiological and clinical criteria that make us think about ruling out Monkeypox in the current context of transmission in Peru. The characteristics of the confirmed cases are discussed versus those of other diseases that are part of the differential diagnosis such as chickenpox, hand-foot-mouth syndrome, etc.

Mountain cities specializing in tourism increasingly aim at valorizing cultural and natural heritage to compete for global attention. In this context, the postmodern urbanization of mountains plays a decisive role: driven by touristification processes, it alters the sociospatial and economic configuration of mountain cities and their hinterlands, which are becoming vertically arranged “operational landscapes”, and profoundly changes city–mountain interactions. To foster sustainable development in urbanizing mountain destinations, it is crucial to understand these settlements’ embeddedness in both (1) nature and culture and (2) space and time. The Andean city of Huaraz is a case in point: an intermediate center in highland Peru, it is characterized by a strategic location in the Callejón de Huaylas (Santa Valley), influenced by Hispanic and Quechua culture and dominated by the gl...

This article examines a Judgment issued by the Sala Superior del Tribunal Electoral del Poder Judicial de la Federación de la República Mexicana (Superior Court of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation of the Mexican Republic) in relation to the final resolutions issued by the Commission of the Council for Transparency and Access to Information of the Federal Electoral Institute, which denied the requests of mexican citizens to provide them with copies of the "ballots" (or "ballot papers" in the case of Peru) regarding the electoral process because the results of the presidential election caused them to object to the calculation of the votes and required them to count them again.Of course, the academic importance of resolving that demand was not fundamentally to review the outcome of the electoral process but to elucidate the chara...

This paper proposes a framework of analysis for the governance dimension in the implementation in Peru of the Nationally Determined Contributions derived from the Paris Agreement (NDC). The less developed countries, such as the one mentioned, add to the technological and financing difficulties to implement the NDC, the institutional weaknesses. In this context, the analysis of governance conditions should consider short-term political factors, constraints on institutional development, as well as elements of political economy. This leads us to consider both the sectoral and territorial dynamics, as well as the different roles that actors, with economic and political power, play around climate policy.

As south-south investments increase so do the issues experienced by investing companies. One of these is the impact of culture. This article analyzes the effects of the subsidiary country culture on an investing firm’s organizational culture and the managerial practices used to address them. Data is gathered from cultural databases, a company-wide survey and semi structured interviews. Descriptive statistics are used to reveal country and organizational culture differences, with content analysis to expose management responses. There is a clear difference between the firm’s Vietnamese and Peruvian workers, with the company’s practices more amenable to the Vietnamese employees. Recognition of this has resulted in a number of initiatives to reduce its impact. The study’s results offer suggestions that may be valued by other foreign companies interested in operating in Peru and may b...

Drawing on the critical race theory, this text proposes to investigate how the mechanisms of institutional racism act in the different spheres of the State through an in-depth study of the case of Algendones. Using documentary sources, but also interviews, the work develops a socio-legal analysis of the case of denunciation of racial discrimination in Peru. The methodology is based on storytelling or the experience of the victim in different parts of the process. It starts from the premise that anti-black racism is a system of oppression historically built from the colonial past as a legacy of racial enslavement. This legacy has an impact on legal practice and theory by limiting the scope of the category of the human and, therefore, of the subject of law. Specifically, the category of fungibility is used as an element of survival of racial slavery that acts as an impediment to prosecute ...

The liberal State emphasized that the right to property grants the attributes of using, enjoying, and disposing of an asset. However, beginning in 1911, Léon Duguit introduced the concept of the social function of property, asserting that the owner must not only seek personal satisfaction but also contribute to the well-being of the collective. Since its introduction, the social function of property has been incorporated into the constitutions of various states. However, the Peruvian constituent assembly of 1993 deliberately departed from this approach, and thus, Article 70 of our Constitution merely states that property shall be exercised in harmony with the common good—a provision that remains unchanged to this day. Consequently, the first objective of this research is to analyze the validity of the social function of property as a universal legal category within constitutional law....
