Global warming resulting from the emission of greenhouse gases, especially CO2, has become a major concern in recent years. Therefore many technologies have been developed to treat CO2. This project will be based on literature review for making a pre-design of a system for CO2 biological removal. The technologies reviewed will be algae and other autotroph organisms. One of this technologies will be elected to apply this bibliographical data to a real waste treatment plant that emits CO2. The following is a project about the design and construction of a tubular photobioreactor to produce microalgae Chlorella KR-1. Using combustion gases from a fuel-oil boiler in Cementos Molins Industrial plant. The reactor was predesign for the treatment of 1.5 m3 s-1 of gas and contained a pre-treatment on scrubber for minimizing the nitrogen dioxides presented in the combustion gases. The final maximum...

Humankind is currently facing a challenge that distinguishes no borders, ideologies, socioeconomic systems, ethnic groups, religions or cultures. It is a war that unites us as a biological species, in which the main weapons come from research aimed at improving health systems. In this war, governments and international health organizations define the strategy; and health systems and law enforcement agencies, together with citizens’ support, carry out actions and fight the battles. However, the most important battle is fought inside each of us. Just like Perseus fought against Hades in a battle of titans to prevent the Earth from turning into hell, the immune system activates a powerful machinery in which molecules and cells of the innate and acquired immune system jointly act to defeat SARS-Cov-2: a machinery that follows a script written by evolution, and that will leave in our immune...

The management of the SARS-CoV-2 infection in Taiwan has been listed as one of the most efficient in the world. Its population size is almost equivalent to that of Peru, but the rate of infections has been less than 600 and the mortality rate has been extremely low: only seven patients died until December. Despite its geographical proximity to the city of Wuhan, Taiwan successfully faced the pandemic because of its previous experience with the SARS epidemic in 2003 and its greater public awareness compared to that in other countries. The actions that have made of Taiwan an example of how to develop an efficient public health policy to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2 are the following: the use of electronic and computer resources; the appropriate use of information; the development of its own laboratory tests; and, finally, the careful and effective management of suspected cases, contact...

This article describes the analysis made about the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions mainly generated by domestic electric energy consumption and wastes produced by households. A district zoning was also made through a cluster analysis according to various characteristics of interest. The results of the statistical processing, estimation, projections, data gathering, among others, were shown in an information system specially elaborated for that purpose and in this system thresholds were established as a reference for the generation of warning signals of CO2 high emission levels that were implemented in a digital tachometer inside the information pyramid proposed.

The current Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has severely impacted the economy and health care system in more than 180 countries around the world in an unprecedented event, which since its inception has resulted in countless case reports focusing on the potentially fatal systemic and respiratory manifestations of the disease. However, the full extent of possible neurological manifestations caused by this new virus is not yet known. Understanding the interaction of SARS-CoV-2 with the nervous system is essential to assessing likely short- and long-term pathologic consequences. This review seeks to gather and discuss evidence on the occurrence of neurological manifestations and/or nervous system involvement in SARS- CoV-2 infected patients.

This project aims to demonstrate that the emissions generated in a landfill polluting the environment, can be exploited to obtain highly pure CO2 for human consumption in quantities sufficient to cover part of the growing market demand for increasingly demanding, an issue currently is being increasingly critical generation of emissions on the planet causing global warming. To reach the objective, design a recovery system for capturing and gases emitted by the reaction and decomposition of solid waste to produce high purity CO2 for human consumption in order to optimize the conditions of the place. The gases will be captured in a storage tank being cooled to room temperature, then be burned with ambient air, purified, compressed, dried, liquefied and stored. The CO2 obtained will be analyzed to determine the purity of CO2 and other gases (O2, N2, Stotal, C2H4O, CO, volatile hydrocarbons s...

Traditionally, to correct the acidity of soil, lime or agricultural dolomite is used, these conventional liming agents can bring as a secondary effect the decrease in soil organic matter (SOM), the carbon stock and the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Alkaline biochar is an alternative due to its stability and ability to obtain a positive carbon balance, improve agricultural soils and generate lower GHG emissions. We evaluated the CO2 emission and the physical and chemical properties of acid soil when amended with biochar, lime, and agricultural dolomite in a greenhouse. versus a control (without amendment). Without cultivation, agricultural lime and biochar had a rapid reaction raising the pH close to 7; biochar increased the content of organic matter (+23%), nitrogen (+20%), available phosphorus (+116%), CEC (+46%) and exchangeable cations. Temporal CO2 emission within 24 hours incr...

Since its beginning, in December 2019, the pandemic caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has infected more than 116 millions of people. In addition to the well-documented respiratory manifestations caused by SARS-CoV-2, an increasing number of neurological and psychiatric manifestations are being reported among affected individuals and survivors. In this article we describe the potential invasion mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 to the nervous system. On the basis of preceding studies on similar coronaviruses (MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV) and current evidence, three possible neuroinvasion routes used by SARS-CoV-2 are suggested: the transneuronal pathway (retrograde axonal pathway through the peripheral nerves), the hematogenous / lymphatic pathway (free through the blood and lymph or inside immune cells), and the digestive pathway (through disruption of the intestinal barrier). Although ...

Several scientific articles have proposed hypotheses to associate the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus with periodontitis. Delving into the possible risk factors and indicators are essential elements to understand the role of the virus in the pathogenesis of periodontitis; they indicate the need for a joint work of physician and periodontologists in the protocol for the prevention and control of COVID-19. The relationship between these diseases is considered to be bidirectional, the effect of the virus on the immune system can aggravate periodontitis and, on the other hand, the effects of chemical mediators of periodontitis can make the patient more vulnerable once infected by SARS-CoV -2 to develop a co-infection. Key words: COVID-19 - periodontitis - SARS-CoV-2 - virus

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unknown impact on the male reproductive health. Therefore, this article aimed to collect evidence to discover if the causative agent of COVID-19 is found in semen. A search was carried out in the PubMed, BVS and Google Scholar databases. Articles with results of semen analyses to determine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in men diagnosed with COVID-19 were considered. Eleven studies with a total of 296 samples were collected in this review, out of which only 2.70 % showed positive results. In addition, mixed results regarding the morphology of the spermatozoa, as well as patients with azoospermia or oligospermia, were reported. The latter could be a consequence of the high levels of the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the testes, making them a target organ for SARS-CoV-2. It is concludedthat, due to the limited number of studies and samples, it is...
