This research was aimed at determining to what extent factors prior to university admission, motivational factors, and institutional experiences explain the academic persistence of students in the University Leveling Term (CIU) at the Simon Bolivar University - Coastal Campus. An explanatory-type quantitative study was proposed, which involved a non-experimental cross-sectional retrospective causal relationship design. The sample consisted of 101 students (50.5% female) with an average age of 17.90 years (SD = 2.37). The study found a significant relationship between some variables explaining academic persistence, which were: a) having a lower orientation toward academic goals; b) a higher score on the maladaptive pattern; c) a higher score in the perception of the Mathematics professor’s evaluation; and d) a higher score in the final performance. The main objective of this study is to assess the relevance of the competency-based approach in teaching practices within technical and vocational education in the Dominican Republic. The focus is on two institutions: the Instituto Técnico Superior Comunitario (ITSC) and the Instituto Nacional de Formación Técnico Profesional (Infotep). The study participants included both students and teaching staff from these institutions. The findings reveal that both ITSC and Infotep are highly regarded across the measured indicators, particularly in the category of pedagogical aspects.

At Universidad ESAN in Lima, Peru, a blended workshop using videoconferencing technology, online forums and minimal local class discussions was carried out through the Global Partners in Education (GPE) network from August to November 2017. The workshop was voluntary and facilitated interaction between Peruvian students and students from the US, Mexico, and China over the course of three modules. The participants from Peru were a heterogeneous group consisting of undergraduates and recent graduates, some pre-professional participants and some who were already working. Tetanus is a condition affecting the central nervous system which is characterized by muscle spasms caused by toxins from Clostridium tetani, an anaerobe bacillus which is usually found on soil and whose spores may survive in the environment and lead to infection when contaminating open wounds. The objective of this case report is to review on the basic characteristics of this condition, focusing on functional improvement with the administration of type A botulinum toxin for generalized spasticity and lockjaw (trismus). We present the case of an 81-year-old woman with generalized tetanus and lockjaw after she suffered a head injury, she fell and hurt her head, with no loss of consciousness; and that was 15 days before admission. During her hospital stay she was managed by a multidisciplinary team. The patient did well, and she is currently being followed-up in the outpatient clinic.

Focal sclerosing osteomyelitis is a rare condition with few therapeutic options other than root canal treatment of the affected tooth. If the tooth is not vital, the treatments are reduced, and there is little scientific evidence of the benefits of the placement of implants in the affected bone. We present a clinical case in which this condition is managed by removing the affected bone, regenerating it with PRGF-Endoret® and subsequently placing a dental implant in the treated area.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the power of communicative interaction in virtual communities, in the case of the virtual community of Facebook Ni Una Menos: Movilización Nacional Ya, from the paradigm of communication for social change. In order to achieve this objective, a qualitative methodology was applied, which consisted of field work composed of in-depth interviews with 15 members of the Facebook group, as well as the analysis of virtual contents. El 19 de diciembre de 2018, se promulgó la Ley 3088 que, entre otras disposiciones, prohíbe el uso de las bolsas de plástico en los supermercados. En esta coyuntura, la empresa ECOBOLSAS está planeando lanzar una bolsa de fibra natural que sustituya a las bolsas plásticas que se usan en estos establecimientos. Producto del estudio de viabilidad comercial realizado, se estableció que los potenciales consumidores serían los hogares que residen en la zona 6 y 7 de la ciudad de Lima Metropolitana y que pertenecen al nivel socio económico (NSE) A y B (Mercado potencial). También se obtuvo datos sobre la disposición de compra, habiéndose establecido que terminarían comprando, solo un 80% de aquellos hogares encuestados que respondieron “definitivamente sí”, que constituyen el mercado objetivo, y que todo el resto no lo haría.

The aim of this article is to report an atypical case of Heck's disease, given its single-site positivity for HPV genotypes 56, 71 and 74, with different biological significance. This disease is a benign oral pathology with variable prevalence according to geographic region and ethnic group; its etiology is multifactorial, in which the human papillomavirus (HPV), genotypes 13 and 32 play a leading role. However, in the last ten years, sporadic cases of this pathology have been documented, positive for non-classical genotypes and high oncogenic risk. The clinical and histopathological picture found in the patient's oral cavity was consistent with the entity in reference, confirmed by a molecular study based on polymerase chain reaction for HPV genotypes 56, 71 and 74. Cedecea lapagei is a gram-negative, non-encapsulated, facultative anaerobic bacterium that has been reported in only a few cases with varying clinical presentations, drug susceptibility, and treatment since its first isolation in 1981. This study aimed to describe a case report of C. lapagei in Peru and systematically review the documented case reports of individuals infected with C. lapagei. A 59-year-old man who had become bedridden with Parkinson’s disease and had epilepsy presented with a 1-week history of fever and sore throat and was admitted. We present the case of a 5-year-old male patient with a medical history of recurrent bronchospasms since 3 months . He went to the pediatric allergy clinic at the Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital with his mother, who reported episodes of acute urticaria, one after consuming cooked pork and another 2 after consuming cooked beef. To the evaluation, non-contributory exam. The following tests were performed: specific IgE in vitro, where a positive result was obtained for pork albumin (26.6 KUA/L) and later skin tests, with a positive result for raw pork. Due to the appearance of lesions only after the consumption of cooked mammalian meat, alpha-gal syndrome was suspected and specific IgE testing against alpha-gal was requested through an external laboratory, which came back positive (>100 kU/L).

The study aims to analyze the psychometric properties of the CASO-A30 Social Anxiety Test by Caballo, Salazar, Irurtia, Arias and the CISO-A Research Team in Peruvian university students.
