This paper presents field data of a survey into the Cruz de Hueso Basin. This survey was based on my interest for a more thorough knowledge of the potential of the archaeological sites that were located within the basin, between its point of origin and the point known as Capilla de Chamaure. Another factor that motivated us to make this survey was the importance of the basin as traffic road and connection toward the highlands of Huarochirí and from there toward the coast, becoming this way the complement or control of sea and height resources, for the ancient societies that were developed in this area. Also, we present the data that we were able to gather from the archaeological site of Caringa, with the aim of approaching to the subsistence of the human group that lived in a seasonal ecosystem as the lomas of southern Lima, besides providing some data on their social organization.

Background: Examining trajectories of undernutrition and overnutrition separately limits understanding of the double burden of malnutrition. We investigated transitions between normal, stunting, overweight and concurrent stunting and overweight (CSO) and associations with sociodemographic factors in children and adolescents. Methods: We used data from the Young Lives cohort in India, Peru and Vietnam, which follow children 1-15 (N = 5413) and 8-22 years (N = 2225) over five rounds between 2002 and 2016. We estimated transitions between nutritional states using a Markov chain model and estimated sociodemographic associations employing a logit parametrization. Results: Transitions into stunting peaked in ages 1-5 years (India: 22.9%, Peru: 17.6%, Vietnam: 14.8%), while stunting reversal was highest during adolescence across all countries. Transitions into overweight peaked in ages 19-22, w...

The right to collectively negotiate salaries afforded to Public Employees has been a longstanding controversy in our country. Especially, in the light of the prohibitions established by Budget Laws. However, this conflict has been recently resolved by the Constitutional Court. This decision marks a fundamental landmark for Labor Law because it crystallizes the right of public employee to collectively bargain salaries with the State. In this article, the author recount the path travelled by the Constitutional Court in this field, that is, from the absolute prohibitions to a reasonable restriction in the pursue to achieve balance between this right and the public interest at stake.

This research estimates the impact of robbery and theft in the household economies of the victims, according to their socioeconomic background. We analyze the current situation of Lima Metropolitana between 2011 and 2012, focusing on Cercado de Lima, a highly transited area where many people from different socioeconomic backgrounds converge. In this place, there is also a high rate and a high prevalence of robbery and theft. Based on a range of values involved in the average robbery and theft sustained in a standardized inventory of stolen goods, we estimate the percentage of the impact of the felony, such as the time of recovery of the goods that were substracted. This study allows us to conclude that the percentage of the impact of the felony and its recovery time are related to the socioeconomic strata, affecting mainly its lower levels.

The aim objective of this research is to examine the incidence of non-communicable or non-contagious diseases and to identify the main illnesses ailments that affect the health and quality of life for the elderly population who live in the Callao region, in order to know the changes that have occurred in the pattern of causes of morbidity, passing from infectious or transmissible diseases to non-infectious or non-communicable others. Due to this, a validated and reliable data collection instrument was designed, which was applied to 202 subjects that are part of the representative sample of people older than 60 years or older, between men and women. The survey, which consists of 25 questions, is a structured, generic and direct questionnaire, and the results obtained will be disclosed. This research concludes that the demographic and epidemiological transitions have made changes in fertil...

Traditional media (press, radio and television) in South America have better expectations regarding the process of digital transition faced by communication companies and industries on a global level. This hypothesis is contrasted by comparing two elements. First, the evolution trends of the media sector in Latin America collected by sectorial databases of the World Association of Newspapers and New Publishers, the Eurodata´s general audience report, the Pew State of the News Media and the Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2016-2020. Second, the results of an own survey to 166 managers from 19 Latin American countries. Media managers from the area confirm that traditional media will grow up to 5% and digital media and advertising could reach 10% and more in the coming years..

This paper provides evidence that an individual’s educational attainment level is important in determining one’s participation the in labour market. These empirical results are obtained through an analysis of school-to-work transitions using competing risks regression. In this model, individuals transition from school into three different categories: formal job, informal job, or unemployed. This analysis draws data from the Monthly Employment Survey (PME) from January 2008 to December 2013. The findings from this paper suggest that educational attainment level is a significant factor in determining youths’ choice between pursuing formal and informal labor opportunities.

The aim of this work is to analyze the transitions from paid housework toward other occupations, unemployment and inactivity, and the determinants of these transitions. We use the panel data from the ENAHO for the periods 1998-2002, 2002-2006, and 2007-2011. After a detailed descriptive analysis of partial and complete panels, we find that around one third of the paid house-workers stay in this occupation while a similar percentage moves to independent work or low productivity salaried work. After estimating the transitions from paid housework to other occupations, and to inactivity, we find that a higher level of education is always related to a transition toward another occupation, although in the case of paid house-workers it is usually toward independent labor. Finally, transitions from paid housework to other occupations or inactivity depend on the economic cycle, although the margi...

The highly productive waters of the Humboldt Current System (HCS) host a particular temperate ecosystem within the tropics, whose history is still largely unknown. The Pisco Formation, deposited during Mio-Pliocene times in the Peruvian continental margin has yielded an outstanding collection of coastal-marine fossils, providing an opportunity to understand the genesis of the HCS ecosystem. We present a comprehensive review, completed with new results, that integrates geological and paleontological data from the last 10 My, especially focusing on the southern East Pisco Basin (Sacaco area). We discuss the depositional settings of the Pisco Formation and integrate new U/Pb radiometric ages into the chronostratigraphic framework of the Sacaco sub-basin. The last preserved Pisco sediments at Sacaco were deposited ~ 4.5 Ma, while the overlying Caracoles Formation accumulated from ~ 2.7 Ma on...

Fine-grained sediment (grain size under 2,000 μm) builds floodplains and deltas, and shapes the coastlines where much of humanity lives. However, a universal, physically based predictor of sediment flux for fine-grained rivers remains to be developed. Herein, a comprehensive sediment load database for fine-grained channels, ranging from small experimental flumes to megarivers, is used to find a predictive algorithm. Two distinct transport regimes emerge, separated by a discontinuous transition for median bed grain size within the very fine sand range (81 to 154 μm), whereby sediment flux decreases by up to 100-fold for coarser sand-bedded rivers compared to river with silt and very fine sand beds. Evidence suggests that the discontinuous change in sediment load originates from a transition of transport mode between mixed suspended bed load transport and suspension-dominated transport. ...

It is a common idea that men in Pre‐Colombian Peru held the socio‐political power.  Recently, many female elite burials from the Moche, Transitional and Lambayeque Periods are changing this idea.  At least in these cultures, there appears to be a continuity of burials of high status women (possibly priestesses) and the matter in which they were treated and interred. Based on this evidence, in this thesis, I explain that based on the recent available archaeological data, that I believe The Transitional Period is in fact The Early Lambayeque period, of which very little data has been excavated.

Variation in dorsal fin morphology was assessed in five bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) populations from the Southeast Pacific. We hypothesized that habitat specialization between coastal and offshore ecotypes led to differences in dorsal fin morphology. Photographs and direct measurements of dorsal fins were used to calculate three indexes: height/length base (h/b), width at half height/length base (a/b) and overhang of the dorsal fin tip/length base (falcateness) (s/b). The sample included 163 individuals (129 coastal and 34 offshore) from Ecuador, 60 individuals (9 coastal and 51 offshore) from Peru and 25 individuals of an inshore form from northcentral Chile (Pod-R). Values were logarithmically transformed to allow one-way ANOVAs and t-tests. Ontogenetic variation was found in coastal dolphins from Ecuador, with indices significantly different among age/classes. All indices ...

Background: Successful breast cancer detection programs rely on standardized reporting and interpreting systems, such as the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS), to improve system performance. In low-income and middle-income countries, evolving diagnostic programs have insufficient resources to either fully implement BI-RADS or to periodically evaluate the program's performance, which is a necessary component of BI-RADS. This leads to inconsistent breast ultrasound interpretation and a failure to improve performance. Methods: The authors applied the Breast Health Global Initiative's phased implementation strategy to implement diagnostic ultrasound and BI-RADS within the context of a limited-resource setting. Results: The authors recommended starting with triage ultrasound to distinguish suspicious masses from normal breast tissue and benign masses such as cysts because the...

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple crop for sustaining global food security and is particularly important in tropical and subtropical regions. In this context, precision agriculture enables more efficient crop management to increase productivity and sustainability. This study proposes an integrated framework for monitoring the phenological development and estimating the yield of O. sativa by combining agronomic variables, vegetation indices (VIs), and meteorological data. Six rice varieties (Victoria, Esperanza, Bellavista, Puntilla, Capoteña, and Valor) were evaluated across six phenological stages using field data, 20 VIs and meteorological parameters. Field data revealed greater tillering of the Puntilla and Valor varieties (9–28 tillers), with Esperanza having the most stable chlorophyll values (21.5–38.7, σ = 10.46) during ripening. The temporal dynamics of the VIs consistentl...
