Globalization has intensified competition in many markets. To remain competitive, the companies look for satisfying the needs of customers by meeting market requirements. In this context, Process Capability Indices (PCI) play a crucial role in assessing the quality of processes. In the case of non-normal data there are two general approaches based on transformations (Box-Cox and Johnson Transformation) and Percentiles (Pearson’s and Burr’s Distribution Systems). However, previous studies on the comparison of these methods show different conclusions, and thus arises the need to clarify the differences between these methods to implement a proper estimation of these indices. In this paper, a simulation study is made in order to compare the above methods and to propose an appropriate methodology for estimating the PCI in non-normal data. Furthermore, it is concluded that the best method ...

Gaussian processes that can be decomposed into a smooth mean function and a stationary autocorrelated noise process are considered and a fully automatic nonparametric method to simultaneous estimation of mean and auto-covariance functions of such processes is developed. The proposed empirical Bayes approach is data-driven, numerically efficient, and allows for the construction of confidence sets for the mean function. Performance is demonstrated in simulations and real data analysis. The method is implemented in the R package eBsc.

Given that human development is a complex process involving multiple components and determiningfactors, multidimensional indicators are needed. On the basis of the extensive literatureon the subject, we advance two new indicators: the Matrix of Capabilities and Functioning(MCF), and the Algorithm of Human Development (HDA).The MCF is composed of vectors of capabilities and functionings, based on Sen’s idea of RefinedFunctionings. It is based in a matricial framework, both static and dynamic. The main purposeof constructing this index is to study how different sets of capabilities relate to alternativefunctionings, to produce diverse outcomes. The Human Development Algorithm (HAD) is a multidimensional index concerning the setof goods and services needed to complete a life cycle. The HDA is a socio-economic contextindicator. It is composed of the main «satisfactors» or basic goods and ...

Student academic performance at universities is crucial for education management systems. Many actions and decisions are made based on it, specifically the enrollment process. During enrollment, students have to decide which courses to sign up for. This research presents the rationale behind the design of a recommender system to support the enrollment process using the students’ academic performance record. To build this system, the CRISP-DM methodology was applied to data from students of the Computer Science Department at University of Lima, Perú. One of the main contributions of this work is the use of two synthetic attributes to improve the relevance of the recommendations made. The first attribute estimates the inherent difficulty of a given course. The second attribute, named potential, is a measure of the competence of a student for a given course based on the grades obtained i...

At the end of first quarter of 2020 it was seen in most countries statistics the beginning of an imminent second wave of pandemic. On January of 2021 it was seen in the data a rapid growth of new infections. In this paper, a geometry-based scheme is presented. In concrete the rectangle and trapezoid shapes are analyzed. From this, a relation between both geometries is extracted in terms of polynomial functions. The resulting characterization of a pandemic in terms of geometric variables is presented. Thus the present model is confronted with official data of USA and India. From the results of this paper, it is strongly believed that entropy might be behind of a global pandemic dynamics.

This article proposes using neural networks to solve the challenge of accurately measuring the distance of an object using cameras and digital image processing. For this, a neural network was trained using a data set that includes information on the distance in pixels of the centers of mass of the object detected by the cameras. This data was used to teach the network to make an accurate estimate of the actual distance of the object. Image analysis methods were also used in conjunction with images of the object previously captured and trained with YoloV8 on Roboflow. The results obtained showed a notable improvement in the precision that is obtained when measuring the distance without the tedious calibration that is had in the other approaches considered for this investigation. Overcame the challenges associated with camera calibration due to possible distortion, accuracy, and generaliza...

In theory, X-factor regulation provides better incentives for cost reduction than previously widely-used rate-of-return regulation. However, a deeper look into how this factor is effectively estimated shows the regulator enjoys a great deal of discretion, especially when selecting the methodologies used to estimate its components. This paper describes how the X-factor is estimated in Peru and analyzes the main controversies (both theoretical al practical) that arose when the X factor for the country’s main airport was estimated. Conclusions are the following: i) careful planning of the concession process reduces the probability of unnecessary controversies when the X factor is estimated retrospectively, since this methodology requires data that needs to be collected at the time of the concession; ii) cost of capital estimation is a main source of controversies due to the subjective cri...

Previous studies have demonstrated that attenuation coefficients can be useful towards characterizing thyroid tissues. In this work, ultrasonic attenuation coefficients were estimated from healthy human thyroids in vivo using a clinical scanner. The selected subjects were five young, healthy volunteers (age: 26 ± 6 years old, gender: three females, two males) with no reported history of thyroid diseases, no palpable thyroid nodules, no smoking habits, and body mass index less than 30 kg/m2. Echographic examinations were conducted by a trained sonographer using a SonixTouch system (Ultrasonix Medical Corporation, Richmond, BC) equipped with an L14-5 linear transducer array (nominal center frequency of 10 MHz, transducer footprint of 3.8 cm). Radiofrequency data corresponding to the collected echographic images in both transverse and longitudinal views were digitized at a sampling rate of...

The backscatter coefficient (BSC) is an intrinsic property that quantifies the amount of energy that is reflected by a material as function of the ultrasound wave frequency. BSCs have been proposed for decades for tissue characterization, along with quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters derived from BSCs that have been used to construct images that represent how these properties vary spatially. The availability of formulations based on weakly focusing conditions has resulted in a widespread use of large focal number transducers for BSC estimation. The use of highly focused transducers offers the possibility of improving the spatial resolution of BSC-based imaging. The model by Chen et al. [1] was developed for estimating BSCs using transducers of arbitrary focal number. However, to this date only preliminary experimental validation of this method has been performed. The goals of the p...

The Geostatistics provides effective tools for the solution of many problems of engineering in which the location in the space of the variable under study is considered, based on definitions of mathematics that provide the necessary foundation for its application. In particular, the Geostatistics are applied in the spatial estimation of the recoverable reserves of mineral deposits. The geostatistical methods that are used in the estimation of mineral deposits are implemented in industrial software and consider the evaluation of the complex geological structure, but these softwares only display the obtained results with an input data and do not exhibit the concepts thatthey use during the process or the methodology of its application. This happens particularly with the Kriging method, which is based on the assumption of strict stationarity, taking into account changes in the mean and loca...

The Earth is a dynamic system and as such is susceptible to the action of seismic and geological events. For many problems in science and engineering there is a need to establish a three-dimensional coordinate system for geodesic measurements. With the advancement of satellite geodesy, is currently possible to determine the horizontal coordinates of a point on the Earth’s surface with errors less than one centimeter. The problem arises when trying to obtain the vertical coordinate, since satellites provide heights with reference to an ellipsoid, which is not an equipotential surface. For obtaining the vertical coordinate, the reference surface of the geoid or mean level sea is taken. In the present study, a methodology to determine the mean sea level in the Paracas Bay is provided, using an ultrasonic level sensor interfaced to a computer. The data are digitally processed using filteri...

The main objective of this study is to assess the ability of several high-resolution satellite-based precipitation estimates to represent the Precipitation Diurnal Cycle (PDC) over Brazil during the 2014–2018 period, after the launch of the Global Precipitation Measurement satellite (GPM). The selected algorithms are the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and Climate Prediction Center (CPC) MORPHing technique (CMORPH). Hourly rain gauge data from different national and regional networks were used as the reference dataset after going through rigid quality control tests. All datasets were interpolated to a common 0.1° × 0.1° grid every 3 h for comparison. After a hierarchical cluster analysis, seven regions with different PDC characteristics (amplitude and phase) were selected for this study. The main results of...
