Using photocurrent spectroscopy, we report measurements of the photo responde below the optical gap in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The a-Si:H films were grown in a non conventional DC plasma assited discharge chamber. The measurements suggest that the density of states of this material is not very different than conventional intrinsic a-Si:H (device-quality) and not so extended as usually taken. The positions of the corresponding photovoltaic transition energies are determined and agree very well with known data obtained by other methods.

Background: Text messaging (SMS) interventions to improve HIV retention in care have shown mixed results, probably due to the diversity of features of their design and implementation. Methods: Using routinely collected data of the largest HIV program in Lima, we retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of an adapted single-arm, one-way SMS pilot intervention, intended to improve compliance with medical and ART pick-up appointments, by use of (i) SMS reminders before scheduled visits, (ii) a motivational SMS after scheduled visit, and (iii) phone calls after missed visits delivered for up to 9 months. The SMS group included people living with HIV (PLWH) ages 18-29 starting or restarting antiretroviral therapy (ART). For the control group, we non-randomly selected PLWH up to 35 years-old who were enrolled in the same HIV program within overlapping or closest dates to those of the SMS group (...

Ever since the inception of brand values, these have become a benchmark for many data-driven strategies, eventually providing a basis for vertical/horizontal integrations, as well. In recent decades, brands have become comparable across the industries, based on their value derived either from the customer perception or in terms of the firm financials. Numerous models have been developed in time to measure the customer-based brand equity; nevertheless, they all evaluate brand equity in an absolute sense. The present research paper provides an avenue to measure the customer-based brand equity in a relative sense using a satisficing DEA model. The information for this model has been collected through a customer-based survey questionnaire in line with predefined brand equity dimensions, which have been verified through a confirmatory factor analysis. We demonstrate the approach by means of a...

The Andean tree genus Polylepis (Rosaceae) has recently been recognized to include polyploid species, but their occurrence within the genus is still incompletely known, especially in light of a forthcoming taxonomic treatment based on a narrow species concept including morphological, climatic and biogeographic distinctness that recognizes 45 species. We obtained guard cell measurements as proxies of ploidy level from 114 individuals of 33 species of Polylepis, including all species for which no previous measurements were available. In combination with previously published data, also on nucleus mass and chromosome counts, we infer that on current knowledge 19 (42%) species are probably purely diploid, 15 (33%) purely tetraploid, and one (2%) purely octoploid. The remaining eight (18%) species have mixed ploidy levels, with three (7%) being di- and tetraploid, two (4%) di- and hexaploid, a...

Introduction: The study of predictors of negative outcomes in patients with heart failure has included the combination of natriuretic peptides and red cell distribution width (RDW). Objective: To evaluate the combined use of the amino-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and RDW as a prognostic factor for death from any cause, prolonged hospitalization, and readmission one year after discharge in patients with decompensated acute heart failure (AHF). Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study. We constructed a combined index = NT-ProBNP x RDW/100. ROC curves were constructed, sensitivity and specificity were estimated based on the cut-off points, and the relative risk was estimated to develop the outcomes studied. We compared the area under curve of combined index versus NT-proBNP and RDW, separately. Results: We analyzed data from 471 patients. The combined ...

The objective of the present study is to select appropriate wall materials for houses in high Andean regions based on the measurements of the thermal behavior of construction materials using a "Test Cell" under real environmental conditions. It will be the first "Test Cell" to be installed in Peru, in Imata-Arequipa, at 4500 masl. The design and thermal analysis of the "Test Cell" are presented using dynamic simulations with the EnergyPlus program. Initially, the thermal performance of adobe, a traditional construction material in rural regions of Peru, is simulated using real meteorological data recorded in Imata between August 18 and 24, 2018, a period with low temperatures (-12.6 °C). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare disease that complicates pre-transfusion tests due to the presence of autoantibodies interfering with conventional serological techniques. This increases the risk of alloimmunization and hinders the selection of compatible units, particularly in multi-transfused patients. This article reviews the use of molecular techniques, such as red blood cell genotyping, to improve transfusion safety in AIHA patients. Data sources such as PubMed, Cochrane, Medline, and Scielo were reviewed to identify relevant studies published between 2013 and 2024. Molecular techniques provide faster and more precise typing, overcoming serological interferences, but face challenges like high costs and limited infrastructure in countries like Peru. The centralization of molecular immunohematology laboratories is proposed as a cost effective solution to ensure equitable a...

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are transmembrane proteins that are key regulators of innate and adaptive immune responses, particularly TLR4, and they have been identified as potential drug targets for the treatment of disease. Several low-molecular-weight compounds are being considered as new drug targets for various applications, including as immune modulators. Mygalin, a 417 Da synthetic bis-acylpolyamine, is an analog of spermidine that has microbicidal activity. In this study, we investigated the effect of mygalin on the innate immune response based on a virtual screening (VS) and molecular docking analysis. Bone marrow-derived macrophages and the cell lines J774A.1 and RAW 264.7 stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were used to confirm the data obtained in silico. Virtual screening and molecular docking suggested that mygalin binds to TLR4 via the protein myeloid differentiation fa...

Analysis of immune responses in Bartonella bacilliformis carriers are needed to understand acquisition of immunity to Carrion’s disease and may allow identifying biomarkers associated with bacterial infection and disease phases. Serum samples from 144 healthy subjects from 5 villages in the North of Peru collected in 2014 were analyzed. Four villages had a Carrion’s disease outbreak in 2013, and the other is a traditionally endemic area. Thirty cytokines, chemokines and growth factors were determined in sera by fluorescent bead-based quantitative suspension array technology, and analyzed in relation to available data on bacteremia quantified by RT-PCR, and IgM and IgG levels measured by ELISA against B. bacilliformis lysates. The presence of bacteremia was associated with low concentrations of HGF (p = 0.005), IL-15 (p = 0.002), IL-6 (p = 0.05), IP-10 (p = 0.008), MIG (p = 0.03) and ...

Chondrus canaliculatus is a red seaweed endemic to Peru and Chile. The name currently represents the only species classified in Chondrus from the southern hemisphere. Based on previous phylogenetic analyses, C. canaliculatus is polyphyletic with respect to Chondrus and possesses unique morpho-anatomical features that distinguish it from other genera in the Gigartinaceae. In this study, expanded phylogenetic analyses using rbcL and COI sequences, a combined data set, and morphological details were further examined to address the taxonomy and evolutionary systematics of C. canaliculatus. Genetic analyses placed C. canaliculatus well within the genus Mazzaella and therefore Mazzaella canaliculata comb. nov. is proposed. Mazzaella canaliculata is distinguished from the other Mazzaella from the southern hemisphere by its dichotomous branching, secondary filaments that persist and leave a well...
