Understanding how the physiological processes of trees are affected by the environment or silvicultural practices is important for forest management, which requires process-based models. It enables the evaluation of the growth of a forest under different scenarios. The 3-PG model has been widely used all over the world, justified by its simplicity and efficiency, as it uses a more accessible language and fewer parameters than other process-based models. It is a model of greatest interest for forest management because it enables the use of allometric equations to calculate variables of interest in this area, such as the average diameter at 1.30 m height (DBH), total height and stand volume. The 3-PG parameterization is essential to guarantee the model's good performance; however, in some cases, when observed data are not available, values from the literature is used or calibration is perf...

From data of USA, Japan, Germany, UK, Italy and Russian, it is claimed that the Global pandemic dictated by the dynamics of Corona virus exhibits distributions that would correspond to a morphology of Bessel-like type. Under the assumption that the pandemic contains phases of infection denoted by the velocity and acceleration of propagation of virus, then a model of polynomials given by the integer-order Bessel functions is proposed. These polynomials enter in a statistical approach to define the law of infections as function of time for the ongoing global pandemic. From this, the data evolution and their different behaviors are interpreted in terms of the different phases including the Delta variant for the recent months until August 2021.

The present study explores the cloud microphysics (MPs) impact on the simulation of two convective rainfall events (CREs) over the complex topography of Andes mountains, using the Weather Research and Forecasting- Advanced Research (WRF-ARW) model. The events occurred on December 29 2015 (CRE1) and January 7 2016 (CRE2). Six microphysical parameterizations (MPPs) (Thompson, WSM6, Morrison, Goddard, Milbrandt and Lin) were tested, which had been previously applied in complex orography areas. The one-way nesting technique was applied to four domains, with horizontal resolutions of 18, 6, and 3 km for the outer ones, in which cumulus and MP parameterizations were applied, while for the innermost domain, with a resolution of 0.75 km, only MP parameterization was used. It was integrated for 36 h with National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP Final Operational Global Analysis (NFL) i...

The study evaluated the sensitivity of the precipitation forecast in the central Andes of Peru of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to change the planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes. In that region is located the Mantaro basin, which is one of the most important in the region. Here, the rainfall is very important to the agriculture and to the reserves of drinking water. The simulations were carried out with ten PBL schemes for 19 days in January, February, and March, between 2009 and 2012. Based on the statistical analysis (model vs. observation), the more efficient schemes were determined and analyses of the vertical profiles of some variables are shown. As a result, the schemes that most helped the model in rainfall forecasting were MYNN3 (general and north sector of the basin), Bou-Lac (central sector) and Bretherton-Park (southern sector). The model generally overestima...

A sensitivity study of the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting regional model (WRF, version 3.7) to the use of different microphysics, cumulus, and boundary layer parameterizations for short- and medium-term precipitation forecast is conducted in the Central Andes of Peru. Lin-Purdué, Thompson, and Morrison microphysics schemes were tested, as well as the Grell–Freitas, Grell 3d, and Betts–Miller–Janjic cumulus parameterizations. The tested boundary layer schemes were the Yonsei University and Mellor–Yamada–Janjic. A control configuration was defined, using the Thompson, Grell–Freitas, and Yonsei University schemes, and a set of numerical experiments is made, using different combinations of parameterizations. Data from 19 local meteorological stations and regional and global gridded were used for verification. It was concluded that all the configurations over...

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is common in dogs with degenerative valvular disease (DVD) and is caused by an increase in left atrial pressure and pulmonary venous pressure. Cardiac catheterization is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of PH. Tricuspid regurgitation (TR), measured by Doppler echocardiography, is commonly used in the clinic to determine the pressure gradient (PG) of TR reflecting pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PAP). For the characterization of the echocardiographic parameters of pulmonary pressure in canines with DVD, 161 echocardiographic cases and the respective clinical histories of the patients admitted to the Veterinary Cardiology Unit of the city of Bogotá in a period of 8 months (November 2016 - June 2017) were evaluated. All patients diagnosed with DVD were grouped within the classification of the American College Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACV...

The objectives of this study were to describe the growth of young llamas by the application of four non-linear functions (Gompertz, Logistic, Von Bertalanffy and Brody), evaluate the importance of fixed (environmental) effects (sex, type of llama, month and year of birth) on growth curve parameters and finally estimate the genetic parameters for growth curve parameters (A: asymptotic body weight and k: specific growth rate). A total of 35,691 monthly body weight records from birth up to 16 months of age from 2675 young llamas, collected from 1998 to 2008 in the Quimsachata Experimental Station of the Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria (INIA) in Peru were used. Growth curve parameters were estimated by non-linear procedures while genetic parameters were estimated by application of a bivariate animal model and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. All non-linear functions...

We consider the adaptive finite element discretization of parameter estimation problems for nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. The idea is to use a gradient method on the finite-dimensional parameter space for the minimization of the least-squares residual. Since the gradient involves solution of partial differential equations, it is not accesable, and is replaced by an approximation obtained by finite elements. This results into a perturbed gradient method. We use an (a posteriori) error estimator to control the accuracy of the gradient approximation and propose an algorithm, which links the estimator to the progress of the iteration. We show convergence of the algorithm under typical structural assumptions.

We show the structure of the parameter space for a family of rational maps containing Blaschke products. Through numerical simulations using the orbit of a single critical point, we reveal the existence of infinitely many Mandelbrot-like sets along the unit circle, as well as eight-like structures in other regions of parameter space. We pose some open questions related to the parameter space of these functions.

This research focuses on the modeling of bounded surfaces using parameterizations based on cylindrical coordinates, which is one of the topics of the multivariable calculus course, where it seeks to develop modeling and problem-solving skills in real context, being essential for this to develop geometric skills that allow sketching graphs in space. Therefore, the main objective of the research was to present a modeling case of a sludge decanting tank, through cylindrical coordinates, using the GeoGebra software in its Suite version for mobile devices, in addition to interacting with augmented reality (GeoGebra AR). With this, a didactic, dynamic, and iterative form is proposed where the inter-action between mathematics, engineering and technology is evidenced, and seeks to improve the teaching-learning experience.
