There is a growing consensus that non-agricultural income represents an important source for household support in rural areas, as the resources from agricultural production are insufficient. One wonders to what extent microenterprises (MEs) help to fight poverty and what factors motivate households to form an ME. The present investigation was carried out in El Quiché, Guatemala, a province very affected by extreme poverty, malnutrition and disintegration, due to the civil war that lasted 36 years. It is found that ME is the most significant factor in household income, but unlike what is expected, its effect on housing and nutrition is limited. Regarding the significant factors in the decision to form a ME, they include human capital, social capital, types of crops and market access. The work also explores the effect of collective activities, such as commercialization, on the development...

A retrospective study of canine patients with dermatopathies treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala in 2017 was carried out. The diseases were classified using the DAMNITIV rule, and considering the variables sex, age and breed. The prevalence of dermatopathies was 27.1% (n=305). The most frequent pathologies were neoplasms, followed by infectious and allergic agents. The greatest casuistry was represented by canines of undefined breed and in females. The average age of affected patients was 6.9 ± 0.2 years.

In this article, I discuss, according to the theoretical-analytical framework of Menéndez (1994), how women and their midwives follow a plural therapeutical itinerary during pregnancy and labor in the region of Antigua, Guatemala. I look forward to present and analyze an example of a delivery that happened during my research, first, as a paradigmatic example of dialogue, not always friendly and pacific, among various local medical systems: a Mayan comadrona (the local midwife), a ladino doctor and a foreign nurse-midwife. Second, this delivery illustrates an encounter that brings together ethnic, class, and gender relations influences by  power and conflict that has structured the material and symbolic construction of this "young" country.

A list of freshwater mollusks of medical and veterinary relevance for the Department of Jutiapa Guatemala is reported for the first time, including ten species belonging to the families Planorbidae, Pilidae, Th iaridae, Physidae, Hydrobiidae and Bulinidae. Three variants were used in the collections: 1) the different substrates and adjacent vegetation were removed with a bronze sieve, 2) the stones, leaves, and all submerged and fl oating objects (including vegetation) were individually examined or washed in a tray, and 3) the wet and muddy area that borders the hatcheries was checked using a clamp for manual collection. In each variant, after screening, all the contents were poured into a white plastic tray to separate the mollusks. The relative abundance per species was calculated in each hatchery. A brief description of the medical relevance and preferred breeding sites of Melanoides ...

Veterinary practitioners of small species are often faced with the challenge of treating wild species patients. This situation requires that the clinicians of animals of these species have special skills and knowledge that allow them to solve cases. To generate information about wild species that are taken to veterinary clinics in Guatemala, an opinion survey was conducted to veterinary practitioners in small animal clinics. A total of 143 professionals participated (1:1 gender ratio). The participants indicated that the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), the turtle (Trachemys sp and Kinosternon sp), the Australian parakeet (Melopsittacus undulatus), the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) and the hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) are the most frequent species. In addition, veterinarians noted that 92.3% of patients are received and treated and 5.6% were referred to other clinics. Only 18% knows with...
