Genetic improvement to obtain purple popcorn hybrids from native corn is in its initial phase. The development of hybrids not only gives you the possibility to complement valuable traits, but also, it is a means to take advantage of superior combinations that express heterosis. However, the first step is to evaluate a large number of lines. Therefore, this research seeks two objectives: (1) to analyze the mode of segregation of the value characters: expansion volume (VE), grain expansion (EG), black pericarp (PN) and grain yield (RG) and (2) select outstanding S1 lines for VE and PN. A novel approach to strengthen maize breeding strategies is the use of the multi-trait stability index (MTSI), this index allows the identification of more stable and high-yielding genotypes with greater reliability than previous methods. To select outstanding purple popcorn S1 lines based on the MTSI, 80 purple popcorn S1 lines were evaluated in three environments. 11 characteristics were studied: expansion volume (VE), pigmented pericarp (PP), grain yield (GY), expansion percentage (PE), male flowering (FM), ear length (LM), grain moisture (HG), plant height (AP), weight of 100 grains (PG), volume of 100 grains (VG) and expanded grain size (TG). Therefore, it is necessary to increase the efficiency of selection of new varieties in plant breeding programs. In this regard, flow cytometry has proven to be a very powerful tool to speed-up selection processes in plant breeding because of its versatility and capacity to evaluate large populations.

The high diversity of the Peruvian Andean maize (Zea mays L.) represents a biological and genetic heritage relevant for food security, but few studies are targeted toward its characterization and consequent valorization and preservation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the Peruvian Andean maize race Cabanita with respect to its bioactive profiles (free and bound phenolic and carotenoid composition), physical characteristics, and in vitro antioxidant properties. The high maize (Zea mays L.) diversity in Peru has been recognized worldwide, but the investigation focused on its integral health-relevant and bioactive characterization is limited. Therefore, this research aimed at studying the variability of the primary and the secondary (free and dietary fiber-bound phenolic, and carotenoid compounds) metabolites of three maize types (white, red, and orange) from the Peruvian Andean race Cabanita at different maturity stages (milk-S1, dough-S2, and mature-S3) using targeted and untargeted methods. In addition, their antioxidant potential, and α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities relevant for hyperglycemia management were investigated using in vitro models.
