El pasado viernes nueve de enero, a las tres de la madrugada, en la ciudad de Piura falleció el médico James Tello Vivanco de veintinueve años de edad, víctima de un lamentable accidente de tránsito. La impactante noticia llegó inmediatamente a sus familiares y causó gran consternación entre todos sus amigos de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos de Lima de donde James había egresado meses antes.

The First International Meeting of Institutes of Tropical Medicine, held in Lima, was the main event of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Tropical Medicine Daniel A. Carrion (1963-2013), Faculty of Medicine at UNMSM. The major Peruvian scientific institutions for research and management of global health burdens affecting tropical and subtropical regions participated in the organization of this event. About one thousand people attended. Topics included child health in the tropics, international health, HIV/AIDS, dengue, malaria, leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, Carrion's disease and emerging diseases. Health Universal Coverage is one of the principal public policy impulsed in the last decade in our country, despite four different national administrations their importance remains in the agenda. The advances in this process are evident in the increment of the insurance coverage, that in case of Seguro Integral de Salud (SIS) was broaded from 19,4% in 2006 to 50,2% in 2015 (National Household Survey – NHS). However, it is real that while in 2006, 44,9% of affiliates to SIS sought attention for health problems in public health establishments of national, regional o local level, this proportion decrease to 31,7% in 2015. These results force us to pay attention to other factors that would be restricting the improvement in the health services access, especially in poor people protected financially. Objetivos: Medición del indicador de supresión virológica sostenida como respuesta exitosa a los 12 meses, en pacientes que iniciaron tratamiento gratuito durante el primer año del programa TARGA (2004). Diseño: Observacional, descriptivo, longitudinal retrospectivo. Se tomó como universo a todos los pacientes adultos con VIH/sida que ingresaron al Programa TARGA durante el primer año y están registrados en bases de datos del MINSA. Objetivos: Detectar el genoma proviral de HTLV-1 mediante el desarrollo de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR). Diseño: Descriptivo. Institución: D.A. Microbiología Médica, Facultad de Medicina, UNMSM. Participantes: Personas con y sin sospecha de HTLV-I. Principales medidas de resultados: detección de HTLV-1 mediante PCR. Resultados: El 71,4% de los pacientes con sospecha clínica de HTLV-I fue reactivo por métodos Inmunológico. Elisa HTLV I-II Biokit detectó 5 casos reactivos (X=2,359 ± DE: 0,7309); los dos casos con sospecha clínica de HTLV- I fueron no reactivos (DO: 0,007 y 0,04); los tres casos con antecedente clínico de estrongiloidiosis fueron no reactivos al Elisa (DO: 0,029, 0,001 y 0,00).
