Objective: To determine the current status of male infertility in a general hospital. Design: Descriptive, retrospective study. Material and Methods: We reviewed 371 charts of male patients attended at Arzobispo Loayza Hospital Infertility Service in a 4 - year period. Inclusion criteria were male infertility diagnosis with pathological results in two or more spermatograms and/or ejaculatory sexual dysfunction. Results: We found 79 cases of male infertility, incidence 21,3%. Average age at diagnosis was 35, 9 years, average time of infertility 4 years, 64,8% with primary infertility. Most frequent diagnosis were infection of accessory sexual glands (38%), abnormal seminal plasma (16,5%), azoospermia (15,2%), idiopathic astenozoospermia (12, 7%). Most frequent germ found was hemolytic Streptococcus alpha (50%). 22,8% of the couples conceived mostly with antibiotics use, intrauterine insem...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide (CD), eucalyptus leaf extract - grapefruit seed (ELE-GS), seed extract - grapefruit pulp (SE-GP) on reducing the load of aerobic mesophilic bacteria, E. coli, and total coliforms in guinea pig carcasses (Cavia porcellus). It was used a completely randomized factorial design with seven treatments: T1 = Control, T2 = CD 20 ppm, T3 = CD 30 ppm, T4 = ELE-GS 3000 ppm, T5 = ELE-GS 5000 ppm, T6 = SE-GP 400 ppm and T7 = SE-GP 800 ppm, where each treatment had five replicates (carcasses), except T1 (n=6). All treatments were effective in reducing the load of aerobic mesophilic bacteria in relation to the control group (T1). In the case ofE. coli, T5 was more efficient than T1 (p<0.05), and in total coliforms, T3, T5, T6, and T7 were more efficient that T1 (p<0.05). It is concluded that the use of CD 30 ppm and ELE-GS...

Bartonella bacilliformis is a pathogen that is endemic in some areas of the Andean region of Peru, southern Ecuador and southern Colombia. This pathogen causes so-called Carrion's disease, a biphasic disease with acute and chronic phases, called Oroya fever and "Peruvian wart" respectively. In the absence or delay of antibiotic treatment, the mortality rate in the acute phase is up to 88%. The acute phase is characterised by fever and severe anaemia and may be followed, several weeks or months later, by the chronic eruptive phase due to endothelial cell proliferation. No animal reservoir has been identified to date and it is considered that healthy carriers act as a pathogen reservoir in endemic areas.

The so-called Takahashi’s Inversion Theorem, the reconstruction of a given spinor based on its bilinear covariants, are re-examined, considering alternative dual structures. In contrast to the classical results, where the Dirac dual structure plays the central role, new duals are built using the discrete symmetries C,P,T . Their combinations are also taken into account. Furthermore, the imposition of a new adjoint structure led us also to re-examine the representation of the Clifford algebra basis elements, uncovering new bilinear structures and a new Fierz aggregate. Those results might help construct theories for new beyond standard model fields

The implementation of molecular and serological tests has led a great decline in transfusion-transmitted infections. Unfortunately, however, this has only occurred in high-income countries, whereas the scenario is different in low-income countries and in rural areas of middle-income countries, in which access to serological tests is sometimes not feasible or limited by economic factors. These factors result in a population that is more vulnerable and at increased risk of infections. Although the search for relevant pathogens that can be transmitted by blood transfusion is implemented worldwide, various pathogens that can be present in blood bank donations remain under studied, as in the case of some bacteria such as Leptospira spp. and Bartonella spp. Bartonella species are re-emerging blood-borne organisms, capable of causing prolonged infections in animals and humans, while leptospiros...

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the protective efficacy of a novel recombinant subunit vaccine containing the protein YidR (rYidR) against clinical mastitis (CM) caused by Klebsiella spp. and Escherichia coli. Given that E. coli infection is known to cause metritis, we also evaluated the effect of rYidR vaccination on the incidence of metritis and conception at the first artificial insemination. Retained placenta and abortion incidence, milk production and composition, and serological responses to specific antigens were also evaluated. In total, 3,107 cows were blocked by parity and randomly allocated into 1 of 3 treatment groups: experimental recombinant subunit vaccine containing the YidR protein (rYidR); commercial vaccine composed of Klebsiella pneumoniae siderophore receptors and porin protein (Kleb-SRP; KlebVax, Epitopix, Willmar, MN); and sterile water adjuvant...
