The study describes the development of pathological lesions in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) experimentally intoxicated through the ingestion of pellets containing one third of Pteridium aquilinum and two thirds of concentrate during 135 days. The guinea pig was used as a experimental model for cattle with Bovine Enzootic Haematuria (BEH). Twelve female animals with a mean of 400 g body weight were used. Two of them, selected at random, were slaughtered on days 30, 60, 90 and 120 days and the last 4 on day 135 of the trial. The lesions developed were neoplastic, inflammatory, degenerative and adaptation processes. Tumors mainly developed in the bladder, lung, intestine, spleen and lymph nodes. In the bladder, epithelial neoplasms (transitional cell carcinomas) and nonepithelial neoplasms (leiomyosarcoma and myxoma), together with inflammatory processes (chronic nonsuppurative cystitis) a...

The study describes the changes made to adapt the lymphocyte culture technique and the analysis of sister chromatid exchange (SCE ) for South American camelids in the Laboratory of Human Genetics, San Marcos University, Lima, Peru used in the University of Naples and the National Research Centre (CNR- ISPAAM), Italy. Blood samples were collected from 8 alpacas and 19 llamas from Puno and Huancavelica, both sexes, and approximately 5 years old. The results allowed visualizing lymphocyte cells dividing and a mitotic index average of five metaphases per field observed at 100X. The adapted technique is considered of simple application, allowing to estimate the frequency of SCE securely and unambiguously, and it is supported by differential staining of sister chromatids with Giemsa or fluorochrome when incorporated 5-BrdU for two consecutive cell cycles.

In the postnatal phase in mammalians, the vasodilatation of the pulmonary arterioles is critical, since this will affect the amount of blood passing through the alveoli for oxygenation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the diameter, the thickness of the muscle layer and the relationship muscle layer/arteriolar diameter (CM/DA) as indication of changes in the vascular lumen in the postnatal period of baby alpacas. Lungs of 36 alpacas between 1 to 45 days of age were obtained according to nine age groups (one group each 5 days of age). The lung histological sections were stained with Mallory’s phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin. The arteriolar diameter showed a significant increase (p<0.05) between age groups 1 and 2 versus 7, 8 and 9. The thickness of the muscle layer showed no significant changes between groups, while the CM/DA relationship values decreased with age (groups 1 and ...
