Aquatic systems are affected by a great variety of anthropogenic activities that alter the water quality through the introduction of organic and inorganic pollutants, consequently impacting all trophic levels of a biological community. The relationship between parasite species diversity and organic pollution in the high Paraná River basin, Paraná, Brazil was investigated during two seasons (Winter and Summer) of 2011. A total of 114 red-tail-lambari (Astyanax aff. paranae Eigenmann, 1914) were sampled from a non-impacted location (Perobas Reserve) and from impacted regions (agricultural and urban regions, upstream and downstream the city of Campo Mourão, respectively). The nematode Spinitectus yorkei Travassos, Artigas & Pereira, 1928 was found on the preserved area, while the nematode Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus Travassos, Artigas & Pereira, 1928 was found only...

Trichuris vulpis (Roederer, 1761) is a geohelminth in the large intestine of wild carnivores, including domestic cats and occasionally humans. However, canine lymphoma, one of the most aggressive neoplasms in the small animal clinic, tends as a direct consequence of the loss of immunological response. Moreover, such parasite-related infections could develop into more serious conditions. In this study, we report a T. vulpis hyperinfection case in a canine affected by multicentric lymphoma. Physical examinations revealed lymphadenomegaly, haematochezia, and hind limb oedema. Despite the obtained treatment, the patient died. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations revealed congested lungs and legs, splenomegaly, lymphadenomegaly with leukocyte infiltration, and bloody large intestine mucosa with 528 adult T. vulpis specimens. Periodic coproparasitological examinations and specifi...

The aim of the present study is to estimate the export fluxes of major dissolved species at the scale of the Amazon basin, to identify the main parameters controlling their spatial distribution and to identify the role of discharge variability in the variability of the total dissolved solid (TDS) flux through the hydrological cycle. Data are compiled from the monthly hydrochemistry and daily discharge database of the “Programa Climatologico y Hidrologico de la Cuenca Amazonica de Bolivia” (PHICAB) and the HYBAM observatories from 34 stations distributed over the Amazon basin (for the 1983–1992 and 2000–2012 periods, respectively). This paper consists of a first global observation of the fluxes and temporal dynamics of each geomorphological domain of the Amazon basin. Based on mean interannual monthly flux calculations, we estimated that the Amazon basin delivered approximately 27...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Genetic ancestry or racial differences in health outcomes exist in diseases associated with systemic inflammation (e.g., Covid-19). This study aimed to investigate the association of genetic ancestry and race with acute-onchronic liver failure (ACLF), which is characterized by acute systemic inflammation, multi-organ failure and high risk of short-term death. METHODS: This prospective cohort study analyzed a comprehensive set of data including genetic ancestry and race, among several others, in 1274 patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis (ADC) who were nonelectively admitted to 44 hospitals from 7 Latin American countries. RESULTS: 395 (31.0%) had ACLF of any grade at enrollment. Patients with ACLF had higher median percentage of Native American genetic ancestry and lower median percentage of European ancestry than patients without ACLF (22.6% vs 12.9% and 53.4%...
