The antimicrobial activities of ethanolic and hexane extracts of nine species of marine macroalgae collected in the intertidal zone of the San Francisco beach, Ancón, in Lima, Peru were evaluated. It was performed in vitro against a panel of standard Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 51922) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 and Salmonella Typhimurium 14028). The ethanolic extracts were of higher yield (67%) compared to hexanes (33%), especially against the Gram-positive, being the extract obtained from Ulva enteromorpha var. intestinalis and U. nematoidea the most efficient against S. aureus ATCC 6538 (74.1 and 78.2% inhibition, respectively). The ethanol extracts of Cladophora sp and U. nematoidea against B. subtilis ATCC 6633 showed moderate to low inhibitio...

Tree-ring research (TRR) in South America (SA) continues to make important contributions in multiple sub-disciplines, including dendrochemistry and dendrohydrology. This report describes some of the advances in TRR in SA presented in a two-day International Meeting Research entitled "An International Network to Promote Advances in Dendrochronology in South America", organized by the Laboratory of Dendrochronology and Environmental Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso in Valparaíso, Chile, on January 21-22, 2019. The objective of the meeting was to communicate recent advances in TRR within a network of laboratories in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. Novel methodologies and results in dendrochemistry and wood anatomy were also presented by collaborating researchers from German institutions. This report describes some of the research within the subdisci...

The bipedicled Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap, originally described and primarily utilized in autologous breast reconstruction for specific cases, has expanded its applications to encompass diverse anatomical regions in recent years. This report presents the case of a 69-year-old woman with a recurrent giant thyroid tumor who underwent surgical resection, resulting in a large cervico-thoracic defect effectively reconstructed using a bipedicled DIEP flap. The patient's postoperative recovery was uneventful, and the follow-up assessments revealed a healthy, well-perfused flap that provided sufficient coverage to critical structures, adequate restoration of the region contour, and enough volume to offset potential adverse effects of subsequent radiation therapy. In addition, this report incorporates a concise literature review highlighting the expanding indications of the b...

Almost half of the tributaries of the Amazon River originate in the tropical Andes and support large populations in mountain regions and downstream areas. However, it is difficult to assess hydroclimatic conditions or to evaluate future scenarios due to the scarcity of long, high-quality instrumental records. Data from the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) provide a complete record since 1979 and offer a good representation of rainfall over the tropical Andes. Longer records are needed to improve our understanding of rainfall variability and summer monsoon behavior at various scales. We developed the first annually resolved precipitation reconstruction for the tropical Andes in Peru, based on tree-ring chronologies of Cedrela and Juglans species. The annual (November–October) reconstruction extends the short instrumental records back to 1817, explaining 68% of the total v...
