The aims of the study were to determine the prevalence of antibodies anti-E canis and the molecular detection of E. canis as well as to determine the species and level of tick infestations in dogs from a rural community in Aragua state, Venezuela. Blood samples from 110 domestic dogs were obtained and analyzed by Indirect Immunofluorescence (IFI) and Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The seroprevalence was 77.3% and the molecular detection was 45.2%. The percentage of dogs infested with ticks was 69%, mostly with Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The results showed that 80% (68/85) of seropositive dogs and 32% (8/25) of seronegative dogs were tick infested (OR=8.5, 95%, CI 3.19 to 22.6; p<0.00001).

The aim of the study was to compare three doses of eCG associated with a short heat synchronization protocol in hair sheep. A total of 48 ewes were oestrous synchronized with intravaginal sponges impregnated with medroxyprogesterone acetate inserted for a period of six days. Upon removal of the sponge, a prostaglandin F2α analogue was applied. The animals were randomly divided into four groups: Control (without eCG) and T1, T2 and T3 with the application of 100, 250 and 400 IU of eCG, respectively. Oestrous detection and mating were made with four males of recognized fertility. The pregnancy diagnosis was made on day 60 after mating by transrectal ultrasound. The interval to heat and the rates of presentation of oestrous, pregnancy and prolificacy were determined. The interval of the onset of oestrous was shorter in T3 (...

The study was carried out in the central Andes of Peru aiming to evaluate promising genotypes of dual-purpose barley (greater grain and straw yield), cultivated during the dry season. Twenty-five genotypes, of which 22 were barley mutants generated by induction from the commercial variety UNA La Molina 96 were tested. A completely randomized block design with 25 barley genotypes and 3 replications per genotype was used. The yield in grain (kg/ha) and straw (kg DM/ha) was evaluated, as well as the protein content, neutral detergent fibre and in vitro digestibility of organic matter for the straw. The genotypes that showed the best characteristics for a dual-purpose barley were UNALM 96 M6h-617, followed by UNA 80 line 525 and UNALM 96 M6h-326. No significant relationship was found between grain and straw production.

The polymetallic Huanuni deposit, a world-class tin deposit, is part of the Bolivian tin belt. As a likely case for a “mesothermal” or transitional deposit between epithermal and porphyry Sn types (or shallow porphyry Sn), it represents a case that contributes significantly to the systematic study of the distribution of critical elements within the “family” of Bolivian tin deposits. In addition to Sn, Zn and Ag, further economic interest in the area resides in its potential in critical elements such as In, Ga and Ge. This paper provides the first systematic characterisation of the complex mineralogy and mineral chemistry of the Huanuni deposit with the twofold aim of identifying the mineral carriers of critical elements and endeavouring plausible metallogenic processes for the formation of this deposit, by means of a multi-methodological approach. With In concentrations consisten...

A volcanic dome complex of Miocene age hosts the In-bearing Ánimas–Chocaya–Siete Suyos district in SW Bolivia. Ore mineralization occurs as banded and massive infillings in sub-vertical, NE-SW striking veins. In this article, a detailed petrographic study is combined with in situ mineral geochemistry determinations in ore from the Arturo, Chorro and Diez veins in the Siete Suyos mine, the Ánimas, Burton, Colorada, and Rosario veins in the Ánimas mine and the Nueva vein in the Chocaya mine. A three-stage paragenetic sequence is roughly determined for all of them, and includes (1) an early low-sulfidation stage that is dominated by cassiterite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, and high-Fe sphalerite (FeS > 21 mol. %); (2) a second intermediate-sulfidation stage dominated by pyrite + marcasite ± intermediate product, sphalerite (FeS < 21 mol. %), stannite, and local famatinite; and, (3) a ...

The Huari Huari deposit, Potosí Department in SW Bolivia, hosts polymetallic stratiform and vein mineralization of Miocene age with significant concentrations of the critical metal indium (In). Vein mineralization records document early crystallization of quartz and cassiterite followed by prominent associations of sulfides and sulfosalts. The earliest sulfide was arsenopyrite, followed by pyrrhotite, and progressively giving way to pyrite as the main iron sulfide, whereas C-u-Ag-Pb sulfosalts constitute late hypogene associations. Sphalerite is the chief ore mineral, and its crystallization is extended during most of the mineralization lifespan as evidenced by its initial cocrystallization with pyrrhotine, then with pyrite, and finally with Ag-Pb sulfosalts. The composition of sphalerite varies from early to late generations with a continuous decrease in FeS that attests to a decrease ...
