Introduction: Work engagement is a relevant positive psychological effect in the literature, and validity studies of the ultra-brief version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale are practically nonexistent in Latin America. Objective: to identify the psychometric properties of the ultra-brief version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-3) and to analyze its equivalence with the UWES-9 version in a sample of teachers from a public university in Mexico. Method: the final sample consisted of N=247 university teachers, who answered the 9-item and 3-item versions of the UWES and the Burnout Evaluation Questionnaire for Education Personnel (CESQT-PE) to estimate its discriminant validity. Results: The results confirmed very high correlations between both versions of the UWES (3-9) (r=>.82-.93), a unidimensional structure of the UWES- 3 with higher factor loadings (>.75), satisfact...

The objective of this study was to propose a structural model that delineates the relationship between different psychological characteristics in relation to mental health problems through a structural equation model. In a non-random, intentional sample of N = 231 students, the specified model demonstrates that anger-trait, self-denial and internal locus of control variables have effects on mental health problems through mediators such as anger-in, lack of assertiveness, and self-efficacy, and that they keep the expected theoretical relationships (X2 = 50.24, gl = 35 and p = 0.04; razón X2/gl = 1.44, CFI = .98, NFI = .93, IFI = .98, RMSEA = .04) These findings are discussed in terms of their contribution to understanding the mechanisms of the complex relationship among psychological characteristics, personality and health.

The goal of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the Type D Personality Scale (DS-14) in a sample of Mexican participants (n = 702). The scale was evaluated through a non-parametric approach based on Mokken scaling. Moreover, confirmatory factor analyses were performed using the weighted least squares mean and variance (WLSMV) method, internal consistency estimation with omega coefficient (ω), measurement invariance by gender, and convergent validity with mental health measures (MBI = burnout, GHQ = depression, sleep disorders, social dysfunction, and somatic symptoms), and controlling job stressors (JCQ = job demands and job control). The results showed low to moderate partial correlations in DS-14 items concerning the mental health scores, and acceptable reliability rates (ω = .62-.86). Measurement invariance between men and women was found, a...

The measurement of burnout has evolved into the creation of various tools and models. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey (MBI-GS) is one of these instruments used to measure three definitional constructs of burnout: (1) emotional exhaustion, (2) professional efficiency, and (3) indifference. It was created for a wide range of occupations, but its latent structure and invariance of measurement in Latin America has rarely been verified. The present study analyzes the latent structure and the invariance of measurement of MBI-GS in a sample of 940 Peruvian workers in various occupations. The methodology of structural equations was applied through the confirmatory factor analysis, as well as the invariance of measurement between men and women, imposing restrictions successively more strict. The results satisfactorily verified the structure of three-dimensional latent MBI-GS, and t...

The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between labor engagement, sociodemographic aspects, and some psychosocial work factors among employees at restaurant in Morelos, Mexico. Using the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ), Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI), and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) in a sample by 88 employees, the results of multiple regression models show that of the sociodemographic aspects, the only variable that had an association was the sex; women appeared to be less dedicated than men; while job insecurity, over involvement, controlling supervision, work hours, and reward had differential associations with the different components of engagement with variances explained between 15 % and 34 %. It is concluded that the surveillance and control of these psychosocial factors could boost levels of engagement with multiple benefits to the employees and the o...

Work engagement is a construct that integrates feelings of vigor, dedication and absorption (Schaufeli, Salanova, Gonzalez-Roma and Bakker, 2002). The purpose of this study is to investigate the factorial validity of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) with versions of 15 and 9 items, in a sample by 145 teachers from Lima, Peru. We used exploratory analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The results show that the UWES has adequate psychometric properties, while respecting its three-dimensional structure, and particularly the 9 items version showed better indices of adjustment. Future studies will be required to confirm these findings.
