Objective: To determine if the Tomographic Severity Score (TSS) of patients with COVID- 19 pneumonia at admission, as well as some laboratory tests or clinical features predict ICU admission in this group of patients. Material and methods: Case-control study, which included patients with a clinical diagnosis of SARS-CoV2 virus infection, performed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), reactive serological test (IgM / IgG) and/or Computed Tomography of the chest (CTT) without contrast. Two radiologists (blind evaluators) described the tomographic findings. The data were taken from electronic medical records (EHR). The most important variables for the prediction of ICU admission were analyzed: TSS, age, BMI, obesity, ferritin, D-Dimer, O2 saturation, PO2, lymphopenia, C-reactive protein, and presence of comorbidities: Diabetes Mellitus, HTN. The prediction of admissi...

Cystic fibrosis is a condition about which not much is yet known and remains a hot topic in translational and pulmonary medicine. Evidence on the management of exacerbations is limited, with few clinical trials and systematic reviews. For example, the use and duration of antibiotics in this condition is unknown. Considering that this is a disease that entails high health costs and substantially decreases the functional capacity of the affected person, it is necessary to quickly establish practical algorithms based on evidence. Based on the above, the objective of this narrative review is to synthesize evidence on the use and duration of antibiotic therapy in acute pulmonary exacerbations in patients with cystic fibrosis. For this, a bibliographic search was carried out in the search engines and databases PubMed, ScienceDirect, Embase, EBSCO and MEDLINE. It was defined that any article re...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Genetic ancestry or racial differences in health outcomes exist in diseases associated with systemic inflammation (e.g., Covid-19). This study aimed to investigate the association of genetic ancestry and race with acute-onchronic liver failure (ACLF), which is characterized by acute systemic inflammation, multi-organ failure and high risk of short-term death. METHODS: This prospective cohort study analyzed a comprehensive set of data including genetic ancestry and race, among several others, in 1274 patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis (ADC) who were nonelectively admitted to 44 hospitals from 7 Latin American countries. RESULTS: 395 (31.0%) had ACLF of any grade at enrollment. Patients with ACLF had higher median percentage of Native American genetic ancestry and lower median percentage of European ancestry than patients without ACLF (22.6% vs 12.9% and 53.4%...
