An anatomo-histopathologic study of the urinary bladder, liver, kidney and spleen from 41 Zebu and crossbreed cattle with different lesions of a disease commonly named as “hematuria” or Machicura´s intoxication was carried out in the Oxapampa province (Pasco). A total of 173 animals were inspected and samples from 41 animals with pathological lesions in bladder were collected at the local slaughterhouse. It was found that urinary bladder lesions were multifocal in 85.4% (35/41) of the cases. Tissue samples were processed with Hematoxiline-Eosine stain (HE), Hale´s histochemical stain for acid mucopolysaccharide and Masson trichromic for fibrous connective tissue with collagen or muscular fibres. The most important microscopic lesions were proliferative polips (24/ 41); the circulatory processes as haemorrhage (28/41), vascular proliferation or “angioblastic nests” (19/41), and ...

Bovine Enzootic Vesical Hematuria (BEVH) is a disease caused by continuous consumption of the common fern (Pteridium aquilinum). This plant has a set of carcinogenic and mutagenic substances, including the ptaquiloside (pq) which is responsible for neoplastic and hemorrhagic lesions in the bladder mucosa of cattle, eventually leading to hematuria. This study determined the prevalence of BEVH in cattle at Chontabamba, province of Oxapampa, Peru. Urine samples were collected by perianal massage from 210 females older than 2 years old of various genotypes and productive purpose (milk and beef). The animals were naturally exposed to consumption of the common fern. Urine samples were subject to urianalysis test involving the application of urine test strips (UTS) and microscopic examination of urinary sediment (MEUS). The prevalence of BEVH was 7.6 ± 3.6% by UTS and 15.2 ± 4.9% by MEUS. The...

The field study was conducted in Oxapampa, Pasco, Peru to clinically diagnose bovine enzootic vesical hematuria (BEVH) by the urinalysis test, in conjunction with clinical and semiological evaluation of the animals, and the assessment of the farm. Urinary samples were collected by external manual stimulation of the perivulvar and perineal area in 211 female cattle, older than 6 months of age, and naturally exposed to consumption of braken fern – Pteridium aquilinum (Pa). Samples were analyzed using reagent strips (RS), physicochemical characteristics (color, turbidity, specific weight and pH), complementary chemical tests (protein, glucose and bilirrubin), and microscopic evaluation of the sediment (EMS). EMS is a confirmatory test for BEVH and highly relevant for subclinical cases (microhematuria). EMS results varied in intensity and therefore, a new classification based on the number...
