Objective: Adaptation to Peruvian population of the Pediatric Symptoms Checklist (PSC-17), a questionnaire that assists in the identification of emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents between 6 to 17 years. Method: On the basis of the original texts of PSC-17 in English and Spanish and the Chilean version, a committee of five experts proceeded to the adaptation of the 17 items for parents and caregivers and for adolescents. Results: Some items were kept identical to one of the two revised Spanish versions; others remained similar to the Chilean version, and some had to be slightly modified to match Peruvian Spanish. Conclusions: The final Peruvian version of the PSC-17 would facilitate the detection of mental health problems in children and adolescents in our country, even though it is still necessary to subsequently carry out pertinent studies of its psychometric ...

At the end of the 19th century, substances such as bromides began to be used to induce deep sleep in people with mental disorders. The use of barbiturates for the same purpose was reported by Epifanio in 1913, but it was Kläsi, in the early 1920s, who most successfully fostered the administration of such agents, particularly Somnifen, for what he called “sleep cure” or “prolonged narcosis” (dauernarkose). In 1934 Cloettal, a mixture of barbiturates and other compounds, was introduced to replace Somnifen. The use of this procedure declined with the appearance of other therapeutic methods, but continued for several decades. In the Soviet Union, sleep cure was influenced by the Pavlovian doctrine, and used for both mental disorders and conditions considered as psychosomatic. The method’s greatest discredit occurred at Chelmsford Hospital in Australia, where 25 deaths associated w...

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition whose main symptoms are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD has been associated with a model of pathophysiological heterogeneity, in which, among others, executive functions are mostly affected, generating significant difficulties in responding to certain stimuli, planning and organizing a variety of actions, reflecting on possible consequences, and inhibiting the first, initial automatic response to substitute it with a more appropriate one. ADHD accounts for up to 50% of consultations in child psychiatry, and its prevalence has been estimated between 2% and 12% of the pediatric population. It is multifactorial in origin and, in 70% of the cases, it can coexist with other psychiatric and neurological disorders. The diagnosis is basically clinical and requires, ideally, a careful medical exami...

The aim of this study was to adapt the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ) for university students in Lima. The original English version (Demetrovics et al., 2008) was translated into Spanish and tested in 247 students from a private university in the Lima metropolitan area. The internal consistency of the scale was assessed with Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega coefficients. The original three-factor structure (obsession, neglect, and control disorder) was examined through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The alpha coefficient for the total scale was .88; the obsession subscale obtained .80, neglect, .67, and control disorder, .82. In turn, the omega coefficients were .89, .80, .68 y .83, respectively. CFA revealed the best fit index was the three-factor model after three items from neglect were removed. In sum, the Spanish version of the PIUQ shows adequate intern...

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have played a crucial role in higher education. However, inappropriate use has exacerbated mental health problems. The purpose of this article was to validate the adaptation of the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ) in young university students from a private university in Lima with 255 students between 17 and 19 years old. Psychometric analysis included exploratory factor analysis (EFA), analysis based on item response theory (IRT) using Samejima’s graded response model, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA); alpha and omega coefficients were used to assess reliability (internal consistency). The IRT analysis showed adequate discrimination coefficients for all items. The alpha coefficients for each of the three PIUQ-18 subscales were between .7 and .9, and those for the total scale were > .90 (suggesting the possibility ...

Objective: To adapt the Problem Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ) for its utilization in Peru. Material and Methods: The translation and cultural adaptation of the PIUQ followed a systematic process that involved direct translation, evaluation and judgment by expert committees and back-translation, culminating with the final approval by the scale creators. For each of the 18 items, a first group of experts assessed comprehensibility, acceptability, relevance and quality of the response set in the preliminary version; subsequently, a second group of experts, evaluated clarity, relevance and pertinence in the final version. Aiken’s V was calculated for each of the different features evaluated in the 18 items. Results: In the preliminary version, Aiken’s V had low values for the comprehensibility of items 1, 3, 4, 6 and 16, and for the response set of item 4. The analysis of the first e...

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the mental health of children and adolescents. In Peru, due to containment measures, children and adolescents were subjected to two years of virtual education, further affecting their socioemotional development. The use of the 17-item Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC-17) allows early detection of mental health problems in children and adolescents. Objective: To determine the psychometric characteristics of the Peruvian adaptation of the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC-17). Methods: Data were collected from 561 Peruvian schoolchildren (53.3% female; average age=12.23, SD=2.65) who completed the PSC-17 through telephone or video calls made between November 2021 and January 2022. Results: The PSC-17 internal consistency analysis showed a McDonald omega coefficient of 0.7098, indicating acceptable reliability of the instrument. Within the struct...
