Las cardiopatías congénitas son las malformaciones congénitas más frecuentes a nivel mundial y representan una de las principales causas de muerte neonatal, además de requerir el uso importante de recursos humanos y financieros para los sistemas de salud. Background. In Latin America, the prevalence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) has risen tremendously during the last decade. Previous studies have suggested that receiving dialysis at high altitude confers mortality benefits; however, this effect has not been demonstrated at >2000 m above sea level (masl) or in developing countries. Methods. This historical cohort study analyzed medical records from six Peruvian hemodialysis (HD) centers located at altitudes ranging from 44 to 3827 masl. Adult ESKD patients who started maintenance HD between 2000 and 2010 were included. La linfohistiocitosis hemofagocítica es una causa rara de falla hepática aguda que requiere una alta sospecha clínica para llegar al diagnóstico y evitar desenlaces fatales. Se presenta el caso de una paciente de 13 años con fiebre, anasarca, ictericia, linfadenopatía y encefalopatía. Análisis de laboratorio mostraron anemia, trombocitopenia, hiperbilirrubinemia, hiperferritinemia, INR elevado, y fenómeno hemofagocítico en líquido ascítico centrifugado. La biopsia de hueso reveló linfoma de Hodgkin tipo celularidad mixta. Este reporte discute los criterios diagnósticos, etiología y manejo de la linfohistocitosis hemofagocítica, así como su asociación con falla hepática aguda.

With a higher survival into adulthood, the clinical cardiologist faces challenges in the management of this population, from severe pulmonary regurgitation to heart failure and ventricular arrhythmias. In this review, we will describe the most relevant aspects of the care of adults with this disease.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on medical care and medical education in Peru.  In response, the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS), a charitable medical organization based in the USA, pursued its medical and educational missions in Peru by adopting virtual learning technology. We developed closer collaborative relationships with several medical schools and the Peruvian Association of Medical Schools (ASPEFAM) while offering a faculty panel of twenty-four members to provide lectures and multidisciplinary webinars in Spanish. We conducted 19 webinars including COVID -19 and non-COVID-19 related topics that over the last two years attracted 14,489 participants from 23 countries.
