The aim of this study was to determine the presence of canine anaplasmosis by haematological findings (evidence of inclusion bodies or morulae in blood smear plus thrombocytopenia) and the presence of antibodies against Anaplasma spp in dogs with a history of ticks from the Chiclayo district (Lambayeque, Peru). Blood samples (n=88) were collected from apparently healthy dogs with a history of ticks. The haematological findings showed that 2.3% (2/88) of dogs were positive (with inclusion bodies or morulae plus thrombocytopenia) being compatible with A. platys. In addition, 22.7% (20/88) seropositivity against Anaplasma spp and a multiple seropositivity of 21.6% (19/88) with Ehrlichia spp were detected by the SNAP 4Dx Plus Test. Positive and seropositive dogs showed thrombocytopenia and, to a lesser extent, anaemia, leucocytosis and leukopenia. The results showed presence of subclinical c...

There is unanimity at all levels and in all social spheres that inequality between women and men is an abnormality that must be eradicated in increasingly inclusive societies. The legal system should not only prohibit discrimination, but should go further and introduce positive and proactive measures for equality and, specifically, for female entrepreneurship. This involves analysing whether tax rules are the best way to directly achieve more female entrepreneurship and, indirectly, to pursue other goals such as professionalisation in the care of dependents or to increase the birth rate. Hence, the perspective of public spending is fundamental to study the impact of these measures and, therefore, their effectiveness. This gender perspective in the public budget makes it possible to analyse, measure and change the policies that are adopted in this area.

Precancerous cervical lesions precede the development of invasive cervical cancer by 10–20 years, making cervical cancer preventable if these lesions are detected and effectively treated. Treatment has evolved in the last few decades and now includes ablative options that can be performed in lower-resource settings where surgical excision is not feasible or routinely available. Gas-based cryotherapy, which freezes cervical tissue to induce localized necrosis, is the most commonly used ablative treatment. However, its implementation in low-resource settings is difficult because the refrigerant gas can be difficult to procure and transport, and is expensive. New cryotherapy devices that do not require an external supply of gas appear promising. Thermal coagulation, which burns cervical tissue to induce necrosis, has become more widely available in the last few years owing to its portabil...

Objectives: To determine the rate of optimal cytoreduction in patients with advanced ovarian cancer who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy with dose-dense carboplatin and paclitaxel followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS). Materials and methods: A retrospective study of a series of cases of Peruvian women treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy with carboplatin (6 AUC mg/mL/min) and paclitaxel (80 mg/m2 weekly) followed by IDS, at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases during the 2010-2014 period. Results: The 41 patients who made it to the interval surgery had a median age of 59 years (range: 47-73 years). In 37 (90.2%) patients, high-grade serous adenocarcinoma histology was reported. Thirty-four (82.9%) achieved optimal cytoreduction and five (14.7%), a complete pathological response. Progression-free survival at one year and two years was 74.7% and 51.8%, respectively. Overa...

In this study, we aimed to determine the in vitro activity of Leuconostoc mesenteroides var. mesenteroides isolated from sugar-industry effluents to produce a dextran bioflocculant from sucrose as a low-cost substrate. L. mesenteroides strains present in residual cane juice from a sugar factory were isolated and biochemically identified using Mayeux, Sandine, and Elliker agar (MSE) as a selective medium. The strain number 3 (LM03) was biochemically identified as L. mesenteroides var. mesenteroides, which was used for this study. The concentration of dextran was quantified by dry weight, the morphology and purity were evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Flocculation was evaluated via turbidimetric assays in different pH ranges from sugar-industry effluents and doses of dextran. ...

The aim of this study was to detect Anaplasma phagocytophilum in horses from the province of Chiclayo, Peru, using haematological techniques. One hundred blood samples were collected from apparently healthy horses with a history of exposure to ticks. The haematological study consisted of blood count and the evaluation of blood smears stained with Wright and acridine orange to search for inclusion bodies and morulae of the pathogen. Results showed that 9% of horses (9/100) presented structures compatible with inclusion bodies or morulae of A. phagocytophilum, so they were considered as "positive". This group of animals presented slight alterations in the leukocytic and thrombocytic series. The findings indicate the presence of A. phagocytophilum in horses in Peru.

Nowadays, there is great interest in microbial fuel cells because of the different substrates that can be used in them for electric energy generation. In order to find an alternative and contribute with eco-friendly technologies, this research used the Serratia fonticola bacteria and Rhotula glutinis yeast as a fuel source through laboratory scale microbial fuel cells. A single chamber microbial fuel cell with air cathode was fabricated with a copper foil and a graphite plate as anode and cathode electrode respectively. For the characterization of the cells, physicochemical parameters such as voltage, electric current, pH and electrical conductivity were measured for 30 days and at room temperature (18 ± 2.2 °C). It was possible to generate peak voltage and current values of 0.53 ± 0.01 V and 0.55 ± 0.02 V and current values of 1.76 ± 0.16 mA and 1.52 ± 0.02 mA, for MFC...

The present study aimed to identify morphologically and molecularly the ticks of dogs with ehrlichiosis in the Chiclayo district (Lambayeque, Peru). A total of 297 ticks from 74 dogs were collected and morphologically identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. Nine specimens were used for molecular identification using the 16S rDNA ribosomal gene. The sequences obtained were aligned with sequences of R. sanguineus s.l. from Brazil and Colombia (Northern Lineage), Argentina, Chile and Uruguay (Southern Lineage), Spain, Italy and South Africa, showing a genetic divergence of 0-0.3% and 6.1-6.8% with the Northern Lineage and Southern Lineage, respectively. The phylogenetic analysis grouped the sequences of Peru with those of the Northern Lineage and South Africa, segregating them from the sequences of the Southern Lineage and Europe. The results show that R. sanguineus s.l. from Chiclayo, ...
