Introduction. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in 2017 there were three million people with disabilities in our country. Of these, 5% have a significant functional limitation, so they have to require a caregiver; who can see affected his physical and emotional activity, and eventually, they get sick. Objective. To establish the relationship between the burden of the caregiver and level of functionality of the person with disabilities. Methods. 50 caregivers and 50 people with disabilities were included. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is an accepted instrument for measuring disability, in three categories: complete dependence, relative dependence and independence. The Zarit and Zarit Test measures the burden of caregiver; classifying it into three categories: absence of burden, light burden and intense&...

Purpose – This paper aims to test the hypothesis that the effect of production slowdown on labour demand can be muted by labour hoarding. Design/methodology/approach – This study adopts a production function approach, using data from Malta, a small state in the EU. Findings – The results confirm the hypothesis and indicate that firms are normally prepared to employ and dismiss more workers in the long run than in the short run. Practical implications – This finding has important implications for developed countries, including that labour hoarding can be of certain relevance in times of economic slowdown as shocks are absorbed by internal flexibility. Originality/value – The results of this study add on to the existing literature in two ways. First, this study compares two industries–manufacturing and financial services–for which the former sector received support to hoard l...

The purpose of this paper is to study the possible morphological and functional abnormalities of the small intestine in patients undergoing antrectomy and vagotomy for duodenal ulcer. The relevant literature is scarce and this has led us to undertake a comprehensive study in patients admitted to the Gastroenterology Service of the Hospital Obrero de Lima . Studies on intestinal biopsy in ulcer patients who have been subjected to different types of operation : gastrectomy, vagotomy and pyloroplasty , but none in patients with antrectomy and truncal vagotomy . It is this circumstance which gives originality to this work, so the study of Ia digestive capacity of the patient and the other with a remote monitoring post-operative data is added . We do not intend to judge the advantages and disadvantages of certain types of operation; We have just finalized the search for intestinal disorders ....

OBJECTIVE: The absence of an universal classification for hyperthyroidisms (HT), give rise to inadequate interpretation of series and trials, and prevents decision making. We offer a tentative classification based on gammagrafic and functional findings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical records from patients who underwent thyroidectomy in our Department since 1967 to 1997 were reviewed. Those with functional measurements of hyperthyroidism were considered. All were managed according to the same preestablished guidelines. RESULTS: HT was the surgical indication in 694 (27,1%) of the 2559 thyroidectomies. Based on gammagraphic studies, we classified HTs in: Parenchymatous Increased-Uptake, which could be Diffuse, Diffuse with Cold Nodules or Diffuse with at least one Nodule, and Nodular Increased-Uptake (Autonomous Functioning Thyroid Nodes [AFTN]), divided into Solitary AFTN or Toxic Adenoma...

Several anthropogenic pressures are threatening biodiversity and may increase in the next years, altering ecological processes and ecosystem services. Biological collections offer a rich source of information to develop studies of functional ecology and biodiversity conservation. Key information related to morphology, physiology and life history could be obtained through functional traits provided by specimens in biological collections. Additionally, museum collections present a great potential for document changes of habitat disturbance, using response/effect framework, functional diversity measures, and fluctuating asymmetry approaches. Despite limitations of specimens in data such as abundance, imprecisions in specimen´s georeferencing, errors in taxonomic identification and the poor preservation state of some specimens, biological collections contain vast data banks, which could be ...

More than 45 years of IEP/TP research and a few focused on IEP/TP functions or roles. Yet, the quality of an IEP/TP relies on the functions that it fulfills to satisfy the needs of its different users (Petitdemange,1985). The Quebec Ministry of Education (MEQ, 2004) and the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services within the U.S. Department of Education (in Eichler, 1999) explicitly identified and described six to seven IEP/TP functions. However, a literature review and practising environments highlighted a greater number of functions. The goal of this research is to identify the different functions that an IEP/TP should fulfill in regard to the different needs of its diverse users. With the use of pedagogical value analysis method (PVA), results show a synthesis of more than 700 functions organized in an IEP/TP Functional Specification Matrix (FSM). The IEP /TP FSM is use...

The impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on health systems has created a chaotic scenario, severely hindering the ability to meet health needs and negatively affecting the provision of health services to the population. This prolonged health crisis has exposed the collapse of health systems and their lack of institutional capacity to effectively address health emergencies. This situation is largely attributable to the segmentation and fragmentation rooted in the regional structure of these systems. Meanwhile, limited progress has been made in evaluating their performance. One of the primary objectives of health systems is universal health coverage. Nevertheless, achieving this goal requires the implementation of strategies aimed at strengthening these systems through the evaluation of their performance and the promotion of international health security. In this context, essential publi...
