n this paper we present a robust and improved system for diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening. The goal of the system is to automatically screen out digital fundus photographs of diabetic patients who do not present signs of DR. This work is motivated by the large amount of diabetics in the world who do not receive their recommended eye exams, leading to widespread blindness as a complication of diabetes. The system is based on multiscale amplitude-modulation frequency-modulation (AM-FM) methods for feature extraction, and uses supervised and unsupervised methods to produce its final output, namely, a normal or abnormal grade. The most time-consuming processing routines of the system are implemented in C using a compute unified device architecture (CUDA) to produce results in real-time. The system was tested using 776 images from 388 patients (one macula-centered image from each eye). Dur...

Cervical cancer is one of the main causes of death by disease worldwide. In Peru, it holds the first place in frequency and represents 8% of deaths caused by sickness. To detect the disease in the early stages, one of the most used screening tests is the cervix Papanicolaou test. Currently, digital images are increasingly being used to improve Pap test efficiency. This work develops an algorithm based on adaptive thresholds, which will be used in Pap smear assisted quality control software. The first stage of the method is a pre-processing step, in which noise and background removal is done. Next, a block is segmented for each one of the points selected as not background, and a local threshold per block is calculated to search for cell nuclei. If a nucleus is detected, an artifact rejection follows, where only cell nuclei and inflammatory cells are left for the doctors to interpret. The ...

“The most devastating disease to humanity is commonly known as elephantiasis. Infection usually acquired in childhood but visible indication like pain, disfiguring occur later in life. Severely affected people will have a permanent disability. Not only had it generated physical challenges it also cost for social, psychological, and economical losses. The impact of the disease is so painful and devastating among young men and women as they live with the lifelong disfiguring condition. As the parasite attacks directly to the lymphatic system of the body whose primary function is to drain all the harmful components and impurities from tissues and cells also make a strong immune system of the body to fight against infection and diseases. Since the parasite attack damages the lymphatic vessels and capillaries. Hence the effect is on the flow of lymph resulting in lymphoedema. 90% of the cas...

The implementation of any software development process involves the consumption of critical resources. Software engineers cannot experiment with different development processes before starting them in real projects, due to the time that would entail and the amount of elements that are involved, so it is vital to have tools that allow the pre-visualization of the results of executing the software development process and how the environmental variables affect it, thus being able to anticipate under what conditions the software development process will be deployed. This paper presents the modelling and simulation of a software development process using System Dynamics (SD), which allows the graphical representation of the elements intervening in the software process, and the incorporation of as many relevant elements as possible. As a software costs estimation reference, the COCOMO estimati...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between the postpartum oral glucose tolerance test (PPOGTT) and fetal macrosomia and its usefulness as a retrospective diagnostic method of gestational diabetes. DESIGN: Prospective case –control study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mothers with macrosomic infants (n = 71) and controls (n = 71) were studied. PPOGTT was determined in all of them using 100 grams of glucose 8 to 48 hours postpartum. Data processing used SPSS 10,0. RESULTS: Abnormal PPOGTT is a risk factor to fetal macrosomia with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) 5,9 (95%CI 2,6-13,4). There is association with a previous history of macrosomia OR 15,7 (95CI 1,9-123,6) and with prenatal control OR 5,7 (95%CI 1,2-26,8). CONCLUSIONS: PPOGTT may identify a subset of women with macrosomic infants who had gestational diabetes; we may consider it a retrospective diagnostic test.

A novel method to prepare BC nanocomposites reinforced with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is reported. A simple hydrazine treatment is shown to in-situ reduce the graphene oxide (GO) incorporated to BC films while increasing their conductivity. Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm the presence of graphene and assess the effect of the hydrazine treatment on its structure. XRD tests revealed no changes on BC structure. We hypothesize that this treatment removes the hydroxyl and epoxy groups present on the reduced graphene and increases the content of nonoxygenated carbon. These changes account for the increase in conductivity of the BC-based films, which behaved as an insulating material before the hydrazine treatment and reach an average conductivity value of 12 S/m after such a treatment.

Purple corn (Zea mays L.) is a superfood native to Peru, highly regarded for its functional properties and commonly used in the preparation of traditional beverages and desserts, such as chicha morada and mazamorra morada. Following processing, the corn cobs remaining as a byproduct retain significant amounts of bioactive compounds with potential for utilization. This study proposes their use as a primary component in the production of teas. To ensure product safety, the moisture content, total ash, and counts of enterobacteria and aflatoxins in the raw materials were first evaluated. Fourteen formulations were developed, varying in the proportions of corn cobs, quince, stevia, cinnamon, and cloves, as well as extraction times (5 and 10 minutes at 100 °C) with hot water. Two rapid sensory evaluation methods using consumer panels were applied sequentially: Flash Profile (FP) and Check-...

Mixed norms that promote structured sparsity have numerous applications in signal processing and machine learning problems. In this work, we present a new algorithm, based on a Newton root search technique, for computing the projection onto the l ?,1 ball, which has found application in cognitive neuroscience and classification tasks. Numerical simulations show that our proposed method is between 8 and 10 times faster on average, and up to 20 times faster for very sparse solutions, than the previous state of the art. Tests on real functional magnetic resonance image data show that, for some data distributions, our algorithm can obtain speed improvements by a factor of between 10 and 100, depending on the implementation. © 2019 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Morris water maze (MWM) test is widely used to evaluate the learning and memory deficits in rodents. Image processing and pattern recognition can be used to analyse videos and recognize automatically the tracking in MWM. There are several commercial and free access software that allows analyzing the behavioral tasks although they also have limitations such as automation, cost, user intervention among other things. The aim of this paper was to develop a new image processing technique to automatically analyse the track of the rat in the MWM, which we called RatsTrack. The MWM test was performed with an animal model for Alzheimer, and the videos were recorded to measure the distance, time, and speed. The segmentation method based on the projection of the video frames was made for pool identification, eliminating the rat, while conserving the shape of the pool. Then, the Hough transformation...

Pretreatments were made to a Pima cotton jersey knit with yarn number Ne 30/1, with two processes: scouring and bleaching to obtain a hydrophilic material with a whiteness degree that allows dyeing of light colors and whites. The trials were developed at a laboratory level at the National University of Engineering (Textile Laboratory No. 24) using beakers and manual agitation, dyeing was executed on the Conmatex machine with vertical movement and to evaluate the degree of whiteness, the spectrophotometer (Datacolor 550, software Color Tools versión: 1.1.1) was used. Three bleaching processes were carried out: classical (referential) consisting of separate scouring and bleaching stages, integrated that considers scouring and bleaching in a single bath and enzymatic where the enzyme activates the formation of peroxide and has a previous scouring phase. When evaluating absorption and capil...

We present a first approach to a new method to compute the motion estimation in digital videos using the two-dimensional instantaneous frequency information computed using amplitude-modulation frequency-modulation (AM-FM) methods. The optical flow vectors are computed using an iteratively reweighted norm for total variation (IRN-TV) algorithm. We compare the proposed method using synthetic videos versus a previous three-dimensional AM-FM based method and available motion estimation methods such as a phase-based, Horn-Schunck and the Lucas-Kanade methods. The results are promising producing a full density estimation with more accurate results than the other methods.

Learning basic operations requires the integration of didactics and pedagogy as key elements in building mathematical concepts. Therefore, the objective of this article was to strengthen students’ understanding of multiplication through the design of a teaching sequence based on the Singapore Method. Considering the needs of third-grade students at Alejandro Humboldt School, a qualitative approach was adopted, complemented by descriptive analysis. A diagnostic test and a teaching sequence were designed and implemented with the participation of 20 third-grade students from the institution. The results showed that students exhibited demotivation and a lack of interest in activities involving multiplication. In addition, the results obtained from the diagnostic test and the support provided by the Milton Ochoa test highlighted the importance of strengthening their understanding. Thus, aft...

The emergence of Machine Learning (ML) technologies and their integration into agriculture has demonstrated a significant impact on disease detection in crops, enabling continuous monitoring and enhancing risk planning and management. This study applied image processing techniques such as thresholding, gamma correction, and the Stretched Neighborhood Effect Color to Grayscale (SNECG) method, alongside ML, to develop a predictive model for identifying five types of rice diseases. The ML techniques used included Logistic Regression, Multilayer Perceptron, Support Vector Machines, Decision Trees, and Random Forests (RF). Hyperparameters were optimized and evaluated through 5-fold cross-validation. In the results, the SNECG method successfully converted images to grayscale, capturing essential features of lesions on rice leaves. The ML models developed with these techniques showed evaluation...
