Background: Insomnia can harm daily functioning and is strongly associated with depression and anxiety symptoms, especially in women. El Salvador has no scales with adequate psychometric properties for their measurement. In this context, the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) is a viable option to measure this symptomatology, given its short length of time, solid theoretical foundation, and relevance in other countries. Objective: To analyze the psychometric properties of AIS in the Salvadoran population, in its complete (AIS-8) and abbreviated (AIS-5) versions. Method: The study consisted of 1479 Salvadoran adults from the 14 departments of the country (mean age = 33.3 years, SD = 11.7) who were screened through a non-probability sampling design. Evidence of reliability, validity based on internal structure, and convergent validity were examined. Results: Both scales showed adequate internal c...

Camu camu is a typical Amazon native fruit shrub that possesses a diploid genome, moderate genetic diversity, and population structure. The fruits accumulate several essential nutrients and synthesize L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in great quantities and an array of diverse secondary metabolites with corroborated in vitro and in vivo health-promoting activities. These beneficial effects include antioxidative and antiinflammatory activities, antiobesity, hypolipidemic, antihypertensive and antidiabetic effects, DNA damage and cancer protection effects, and other bioactivities. Many health-promoting phytochemicals are biosynthesized in several metabolic pathways of camu camu. Their reconstruction from the fruit transcriptome database was accomplished by our research group. These include basic metabolic pathways such as glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway, vitamin C biosynthesis pathways...

Western South America was one of the worldwide cradles of civilization. The well-known Inca Empire was the tip of the iceberg of an evolutionary process that started 11,000 to 14,000 years ago. Genetic data from 18 Peruvian populations reveal the following: 1) The between-population homogenization of the central southern Andes and its differentiation with respect to Amazonian populations of similar latitudes do not extend northward. Instead, longitudinal gene flow between the northern coast of Peru, Andes, and Amazonia accompanied cultural and socioeconomic interactions revealed by archeology. This pattern recapitulates the environmental and cultural differentiation between the fertile north, where altitudes are lower, and the arid south, where the Andes are higher, acting as a genetic barrier between the sharply different environments of the Andes and Amazonia. 2) The genetic homogeniza...

The impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on health systems has created a chaotic scenario, severely hindering the ability to meet health needs and negatively affecting the provision of health services to the population. This prolonged health crisis has exposed the collapse of health systems and their lack of institutional capacity to effectively address health emergencies. This situation is largely attributable to the segmentation and fragmentation rooted in the regional structure of these systems. Meanwhile, limited progress has been made in evaluating their performance. One of the primary objectives of health systems is universal health coverage. Nevertheless, achieving this goal requires the implementation of strategies aimed at strengthening these systems through the evaluation of their performance and the promotion of international health security. In this context, essential publi...

Nomophobia understood as fear of not being able to contact or make use of a smartphone, irrational fear of losing it, running out of batteries or being without an internet signal, which generates high rates of anxiety.  The consumer behaviors of this virtual society lead to the postponement of personal, academic and work objectives because more time is spent performing online activities, which turn out to be more attractive and less complex.   The main objective of this research has been to determine the factorial structure, validity and reliability of the Nomophobia Scale (NMPQ).  300 students participated in a State University of Metropolitan Lima. The confirmatory factor analysis corroborated a structure of four factors, showing adequate adjustment indicators composed of CFI= .997, TLI= 0.997 and RMSEA= 0.084. confirming a second-order model, plus a first-order model. Cronbach's a...

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is one of the five recognition molecules in the lectin complement pathway. Common variant alleles in the promoter and structural regions of the human MBL gene (MBL2) influence the stability and serum concentration of the protein. Epidemiological studies have shown that MBL2 variant alleles are associated with susceptibility to and the course of different types of infectious and inflammatory conditions. However, it has been suggested that these alleles are maintained in different populations due to selected advantages for carriers. We investigated the MBL2 allelic variation in indigenous individuals from 12 different West Central South America localities spanning from the desert coast, high altitude Andean plates and the Amazon tropical forest within the territories of Peru (n = 249) (Departments of Loreto, Ucayali, Lambayeque, Junin, Ayacucho, Huancayo and Pu...
