In November 1981, the Popular Natural Medicine Coordinating Team began its work as an initiative of some field health teams. These objectives were set: a. Develop a health system for the South Andean people based on modern medicine and traditional Andean medicine, available to everyone, both culturally and economically. b. Give a scientific basis to traditional Andean medicine. In this article we want to talk about the value of traditional medicine in general, almost always underestimated, and the perspectives of traditional Andean medicine.

In this edition of the magazine From the South we find a series of reflections on Peru framed within the commemoration of the bicentennial. Although only one of them focuses on directly studying the period of independence, and its analysis does not focus on how the separation with Spain was achieved or on the celebrations held in these years of pandemic, it is clear that all of the Papers in this issue contribute to the understanding of Peru in this specific context. 2021 has been a particular year. On the one hand, the country and the entire world are still immersed in the complex and changing reality of the pandemic, while, on the other hand, Peru has lived through an intense and exhausting electoral process that has not managed to put an end to the political instability that It has characterized it for the last five years.

In this article, different ideas of sustainable development are reviewed showing that they rest on ways of recognizing and assigning values. Despite its importance, this feature has not received the attention it deserves. The dominant valuation perspective is anthropocentric, which turns to behave as a conditionality that subordinates ecological imperatives and is functional to economic growth. Radical different perspectives are South American Andean-Amazonian alternatives based on a biocentric posture that recognizes intrinsic values in nature. Ecuador offers a case study of that perspective. It is argued that it represents a more powerful option because is an alternative beyond any variety of development.

Clashes over extractive projects in Peru between the State and peasant communities have increased and expanded throughout the country during the 21st century, despite policies promoting dialogue and negotiation encouraged by various governments. Rather, the use of exceptional regimes, in the form of declaration of state of emergency to address protests, has become normalized, and in some cases, this normalization has allowed for the establishment of authoritarian enclaves. Why are authoritarian enclaves established? How are they governed? What mechanisms make authoritarian government possible? This article studies, analyzing the history of the approval and construction of a mining corridor, how and why the Peruvian State instituted an authoritarian enclave in the surroundings of the Las Bambas mining project, between 2015 and 2020. The analysis is based on three analytical inputs: 1) the...

The creation of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) in 2008 seemed to encourage the formation of an alternative regional order to the inter-American system led by the United States. This project emerged in a context characterized by the failure of the FTAA, Brazil's international projection and the strength of South American countries to face the global economic crisis. Such conditions led to the diffusion of post-hegemonic readings to understand the regionalization of South America. Nowadays, however, the quest for regional autonomy is limited both by domestic and regional factors and by systemic forces involved in shaping new regional orders. As part of its nearest influence zone, United States has vital interests in South America that may collide with projects of regional autonomy. Given this context, it is necessary to review how the US hegemony has evolved in the region and ...

A permanent challenge in higher education is the development of teaching skills in academics to respond to the new profile of the student, demanding changes in the way teaching is delivered and evaluated. Here we evaluate the perception of university teaching skills from the perspective of students and the institutional perspective provided by teachers, as well as differences by gender, in a sample of 1837 students and 227 academics from a publicuniversity in two regions of south-central Chile. The general results indicate that teachers give greater importance to skills than students. Likewise, while students value skills, generating a pleasant climate in class and innovating in work practices, academics give greater importance to the transmission of knowledge and making evaluations more flexible. Nevertheless, there is agreement between both groups, considering that planning classes is ...

The climate crisis and unsustainable economic practices are reinforced by colonial values like nature instrumentalism and individualism, which shape global sustainability agendas. In contrast, Indigenous values grounded in a holistic understanding have fostered communal sustainability for centuries but remain underrepresented in sustainability practice. This paper compares Indigenous worldviews alongside modern cultural worldviews. Additionally, it examines different sustainability proposals and practical examples of Indigenous principles in policy and business settings (such as urban policy or consulting firms). Results suggest that Indigenous values linked to interconnectedness foster sustainable lifestyles and community and nature protection. However, values that disrupt human-nature connections hinder sustainability transformations. Contributing to the literature gap on worldviews an...
