Who writes the news in the Chilean press according to gender? Who are the sources, male or female, in the Chilean press? Is there a relationship between the gender of journalists and the gender of the sources in the Chilean press? This article studies the gender of the Chilean newsroom and their sources in 12,113 news through a quantitative method with a computational social science approach. This method combines web scraping and natural language processing techniques to gather and preprocess data, facilitating the exploration of complex social phenomena. Results show important biases in journalists and source gender. From a sample of 158 journalists, 99 were men (63%) and 59 women (37%). Also, from 12,113 news, 7,565 (62%) were written by male and 4,548 (38%) by female journalists. Of the 12,334 sources mentioned in the news, 9,771 were men (79%) and 2,563 were women (21%). A significan...

This article analyzes one of the discriminatory discourses that has recently acquired special relevance in the Peruvian national context: cyberterruqueo. The aim is to carry out a descriptive analysis of the phenomenon —from the political-ideological and ethnic, racial and cultural perspectives—, and to study, in the context of cyberspace, the hegemonic representations that are discursively created with respect to certain sectors of the population. Methodologically, the study has an exploratory qualitative approach. The study of these representations was based on the occurrence of this phenomenon within the framework of the Twitter social network, and the data for the analysis were collected from Twitter. Among the results, it was found that cyberterruqueo functions as a tool of social annihilation and stigmatization that is based on negative representations in order to achieve the i...

Ethnic and racial stereotypes are part of the language that the Peruvian sports press uses in the construction of news. At the same time, such press replicates the complaints of racist events in football. This article refl ects on a methodological strategy to examine the coexistence of both elements in the Peruvian sports press. Taking into account the specific characteristics of this type of press and the particularity of racism in Peru, we detect the need to use a research approach that addresses diff erent dimensions of both textual discourse and discourse as a social, cultural and discursive practice. It is a process that relates three stages of data collection: content analysis, critical discourse analysis and in-depth interviews with discourse producers. Put in dialogue, the results of the three analyzes show that the apparently ...

The Underground Press Syndicate (UPS), later known as Alternative Press Syndicate (APS), was a chain of countercultural newspapers and magazines created in the middle of 1966 by publishers of five early underground newspapers «The East Village Other», «The Los Angeles Free Press», «The Berkeley Barb», «The Paper» and «Fifth Estate». By 1974 the majority of underground papers in the USA ceased to exist but they had an impact on journalistic processes during 1970-s that led to the press development in small towns and countryside giving alternative opinion about local news, cultural news, Native Americans’ politics, ecology, youth and anti-military movements. The article considers the history of “underground press” in the USA, its role and importance for Countercultural Revolution of the 1960-s, which was countrywide in the USA and covered all areas of life.

In recent years, factors of change such as the evolution of society or technology have contributed to the creation of new words in various areas, such as crime. The aim of this study is to examine the neological productivity in this area and to identify the linguistic resources used to create these new lexemes. This can be seen in the press, which is an ideal medium for the study of neologisms, because it addresses current affairs and contingencies and facilitates the introduction of new words in the language. For this reason, five Chilean newspapers from 2020 and 2021 in their digital edition were selected, lexical units related to crime were compiled according to the psycholinguistic and lexicographical criteria and were then classified in six categories. Subsequently, the employed linguistic mechanisms and the most frequent word formation processes were analyzed to shed light on new c...

This research paper analyzes the Bolivian media coverage of the presidential runoff of the 2021 General Elections in Peru, in which the candidates participated: Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori. The main objective was to study the frames that El Diario and La Razón used in the journalistic articles of their web portals. Likewise, we identified the digital space given to the publications and recognized the profiles that the foreign press built around each candidate. From a mixed approach, we analyzed metrics and used qualitative tools to examine the use of level and generic framing. To do so, we focused on the media with the highest readership in La Paz and analyzed 34 web articles that were published between April 12 and June 6, 2021. The results show that 44% were journalistic products lacking depth in which less than 400 words were used; 35% presented confrontational frames; 43% refe...

In this paper, we have sought to prove the influence of the educational press on the development of grammatical ideas in Chile. Our corpus consists of two journals published at the end of the 19th century: Revista de Instrucción Primaria and Revista del Preceptorado de Atacama. In our analysis, we use the concept of “field” (Bourdieu, 2003) to illustrate how the dissemination of ideas in the specialized press enables the emergence and consolidation of primary school teachers as relevant actors in the local media. We conclude that this process allows for the emergence of new ideas and authorities within the teaching profession, which has an impact on the codification of grammar texts intended for use in schools. Complementarily, we observe that the government benefits from the growing unionization of teachers to disseminate useful ideas in the context of ongoing reforms in the educat...

This research analyses the opinion articles about the COVID-19 published in the main newspapers of Italy, Spain and Germany. To this purpose, a qualitative inductive-deductive content analysis methodology has been used along two complementary phases. The first included the detailed analysis of the sample, and the second involved a method of comparative textual analysis using the Sketch Engine software. The results show the existence of some common issues about the virus, although with different approaches depending on the country: a certain vision marked by national politics in the Spanish case, an interpretative view in the case of Germany and a more social-humanistic perspective in the Italian dailies. A discourse contrary to generating panic is common in the three countries studied, but with a clear underestimation of the virus’ potential consequences in the first couple of months a...

The objective of this article is to analyze the treatment of cannabis from the perspective of the Spanish newspapers in order to show the image they offer. Using a content analysis methodology, the genres, the sources used, the dominant thematic areas are identified and the treatment given by the Spanish digital newspapers El País, El Mundo, ABC and La Razón, from January 1 to December 31, 2019, is compared. The findings show a predominance of informative texts, signed by the editors or the newspaper itself and a use of official sources. Regarding their subject matter, the newspapers continue to relate cannabis to actions typified as crimes (arrests, dismantling and seizures). Likewise, they incorporate new contents related to this substance, such as the business of production, distribution, biotechnology, cosmetics and leisure companies, which appear as an emerging sector. It also hig...

This research has a double purpose: on the one hand, to investigate and analyze the construction of the image of Paolo Guerrero, current cap- tain of the Peruvian National Soccer Team, through the journalistic discourse of the sports press (Depor and El Bocón) during the process of the Russia 2018 Qualifiers. And, on the other, the influence of this media construction on Peruvian fans. For this, three representative parties were taken as an ex- ample in which the Peruvian striker manages to score (Chile, Argentina and Colombia). What we try to demonstrate in this work, is what have been the discursive resources to inform about the goals of Paolo Guerrero and thus, hand in hand, how these covers and articles have influenced the population to create a positive image of the player. It is projected that the sports discourse of the written press has contributed positively to the construction...
