Much has been written and very little research has been done on the "coking" in antiplanos of America. For some it is "sacred ground" that affirms life at altitude; for others, it causes degeneration of the race. The Institute of Andean Biology deals today for this problem approaching it with a strictly scientific criteria

Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system. In Peru it is not considered an important public health disease. At present Peruvian public health criteria are outdated and fail to address the concept of health and non-communicable diseases whose growth is remarkable. Therefore a new approach to public health from a preventive point of view is proposed and criteria are evaluated. After analysis it is concluded that infertility should be considered a disease of public health interest with a preventive approach.

This article seeks to explain the problem of literacy in Peru (1); it focuses on the lack of information regarding how children learn or acquire writing skills, which allows initial literacy. It proposes to universities and educational institutes to incorporate into their curricula a closest approach to child development, specifically the period of the first seven years, crucial in the reader and writer training. Also, it invokes to decline traditional practices, which determine the failure of active and reflective readers from initial education and explain in part why the university and Peruvian professionals read little or write short texts. Along this line, it outlines the difficulties of the student to use writing as a personal way of processing information and as a tool to interact with their environment. In the last section there is a list of the concepts and processes that should ...

In this article we will present a study about the importance of indigenous community radio for preserving, disseminating, and developing the culture of native peoples, and about the difficulties found in Peru for the development of this type of communication projects. To this end, we will first analyze the history of community radio in the country, as well as its legislation regarding communication matters. Subsequently, we will address the question of Peruvian indigenous identity from a brief historical perspective and its current linguistic situation. We will then focus on the particular case of the Network of Indigenous Communicators of Peru (REDCIP) to study their work in the field of indigenous communication in the country. We will approach this question through interviews with network members themselves, as well as through active listening to some of their radio programs. Both the ...

Archives provide the basis for national historical narratives, a premise for nation-building. However, Peru’s government administration problems extend to national archives: insufficient maintenance resources and inadequate service to the public. This creates a duality (i.e., enormous potential yet bad services), which is especially noticeable in the «Archivo Agrario». Collected in the 1970s by Peruvian researchers, the «Archivo Agrario» is unique in Latin America, given the variety and origin of the documents. In this essay, and using my research as an example, I explore the challenges and, more importantly, the opportunities afforded by this archive —and the urgent need to transform it radically.

Multi-tiered arbitration clauses encourage the parties to adopt agreements to resolve their disputes, allowing them to avoid litigation, the deterioration of their commercial relations and the costs of arbitration. The advantages they provide have established them as a common agreement in practice. In this paper, the authors analyze the effect of existing contradictory rulings on the binding nature of these agreements, given the opposite positions of the Peruvian Constitutional Court and the Superior Court of Justice. Taking into account the legal nature of arbitration recognized in Peru, the authors propose that when an arbitral tribunal is faced with a breach of these clauses, it should refer the parties to comply with the terms of their agreement, as soon as the first opportunity after hearing the parties.

This article first analyzed the influence of religious spiritualism in Peruvian education, from before independence to the present. Educational humanism was later defined as a philosophy that seeks the integral formation of the human being in academic and moral aspects. It was then argued that the concept of "spirit" as a representation of the human essence is a fiction that hinders the development of moral and academic competencies, in addition to hindering interculturality due to the dogmatic influence of Catholicism. Subsequently, the idea of God was refuted and agnosticism was proposed as the most appropriate position when referring to something transcendental. Finally, it was suggested that philosophy and ethics can fill the void left by religious spiritualism more appropriately and correctly in humanistic educational philosophy. In this article we have used the analytical hermeneut...

This article offers an approach to the construction of gender violence as a public problem in Peru. To this end, we examine the development of Peruvian State institutionality oriented toward guaranteeing women's rights since the 1990s. We will identify the consensus and dissent among actors who participated in the construction of gender violence as a public problem in Peru, as well as their influences on the development of the institutional framework to address it. For this purpose, we draw on the conceptual contributions of the so-called sociology of public problems and gender theory. The study methodology includes case study analysis, deepening into the parliamentary debate on feminicide.

Like other countries in the region, femicide—the gender-based murdering of women—has been incorporated into Peruvian law as a criminal offense. This inclusion is the result of the government and civil society organizations interest in producing policies aimed at reducing gender-based violence, and it has emerged as a result of a debate regarding «the increase in femicide» and the systematic appearance of media stories and official reports warning of an exponential growth. This article focuses upon the problem of femicide in Peru through a comparative approach. The aim is to account for the incidence of femicide in sociometric terms and demonstrate that this is not a phenomenon of exponential growth in epidemiological terms. This is achieved through the recognition of two issues: on the one hand, the way indicators are produced for criminal record figures and the ways these are meas...

The study addressed the difficulties faced by fourth-cycle primary school students in public educational institutions in the district of Ccatca, Cusco region, in solving mathematical problems. These difficulties were attributed to the limited use of effective strategies and heuristic techniques by teachers. The main objective is to analyze the impact of applying these strategies on student performance and to propose a pedagogical model based on empirical evidence. A heuristic strategy was applied in an applied study with a pre-experimental design, involving 131 students. To measure progress, a pedagogical test (pretest and posttest) and an evaluation rubric were used. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22 and Excel. In the pretest, 67.2% of students were at the "beginning" level, 21.4% were "in process," and only 11.5% reached the "expected achievement" level. After the intervention, thes...

The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that has emerged as a significant threat in the region of the Americas, especially for pregnant women. Recent outbreaks in Central and South America have been associated with an increase in the incidence of microcephaly and other central nervous system abnormalities in newborns. There is a causal link between Zika infection during pregnancy and microcephaly and other neurological disorders. The region faces a probable epidemic with potential consequences for pregnant women and newborns. The epidemiology of the Zika virus, its threat to pregnancy, clinical consequences and impact on public health are reviewed. A number of features of the mechanisms of infection and dissemination sustain preventive interventions, diagnosis and management of the disease. It is important to intensify its epidemiological surveillance, and to work on prevention and...

In order to use historical data for revealing temperature changes in Central Peru during the 18th century, it is necessary to recognize and interpret the cultural, economic and social responses when confronted with marked environmental fluctuations. These caused changes to the farming systems, such as reduced productivity and revenues in all social sectors, particularly among the indigenous communities. Faced with this situation, the urban and rural population of Lima responded in numerous ways, from reorganizing irrigation systems, improved technologies and reduced taxes, to increased devotional Catholic ceremonies and in the indigenous sphere a public resurgence of ancestral cults supposedly eliminated in the 17th century.
