The odontoma is a benign tumor that comes from an alteration of differentiated epithelial and mesenchymal odontogenic cells capable of forming enamel, dentin and cement. The etiology is unknown, but it has been associated with infections, inherited abnormalities, odontoblastic hyperactivity and trauma. To small or average odontoma size, the acceptable treatment is tumor exeresis. The problem arises with large odontomas, whose removal involves the sacrifice of large amounts of bone, the potential for mandibular fracture and damage to the inferior alveolar nerve. To avoid these treatment complications, Rittersma and Van Gool introduced in 1979 the use of the sagittal-cut osteotomy technique of mandibular ramus. We report the case of a 37-year-old male patient, with no contributory systemic history, who presented increased volume of left side face associated with pain and purulent secretion...

The toothbrush has evolved significantly throughout history, starting with the use of chewing sticks or miswak in ancient civilizations such as Babylon, around 3500-3000 BC. These sticks, derived from plants like Salvadora persica, have been used to this day in various parts of the world, especially in regions with limited access to modern dental products. The transition to more complex tools occurred with the invention of the first toothbrushes with handles andbristles during the Tang Dynasty in China (618-907 AD). Over the centuries, the design and materials of toothbrushes were refined, notably with the work of William Addis in 1780, who created the frst modern toothbrush with a bone handle and boar bristles. In the 20th century, advances in material technology, such as the introduction of nylon in 1938, replaced natural bristles with synthetic fibers that were more durable and easier...

Oral health status in Uruguay was known after the national population survey carried out between 2010 and 2011. The most detected prevalent pathologies were caries and paradenciopathies. In addition, malocclusions, dental loss and mucosal lesions were studied. The information was complemented with other epidemiological studies, in relation with to temporomandibular disorders, which showed that half of the Uruguayan population presents symptoms and / or signs related to said disorder. The National Integrated Health System, which has been operating since 2008, concentrates public and private effectors and has attempted to comply with a National Oral Health Program. It provides prevention, promotion and treatment of oral pathologies of lesser complexity, so many benefits remain outside the system. Training human resources is sufficient to meet the needs of the population, but dentistry in g...

The Smiling Brazil (BS) program was created by the federal government of Brazil, as part of its Unified Health System, in 2004. This program provides tens of thousands of oral health teams in basic primary care, establishes care for medium complexity and promotes municipal policies for fluoridation of the water supply and prosthetic oral rehabilitation, through regional dental prosthesis laboratories, among other actions. The National Oral Health Policy (PNSB) and its BS program are recognized as responsible for increasing access to public health services. Approximately 15 years after the implementation of the PNSB, important advances can be observed: exponential increase in the coverage of oral health teams in basic care and a comprehensive health care approach. However, the accomplishments cannot hide the obstacles that still exist. The municipalization of the health system was carried...

The oral microbiota represents a dynamic and complex ecosystem that harbors between 500 and 1500 species of microorganisms, ranking second in diversity within the human organism. This literature review analyzes the relationship between the oral microbiota and periodontal health, examining the factors that influence its balance and the consequences of its disruption. The oral microbiota maintains a symbiotic balance, which is essential for oral health. The imbalance of this ecosystem (dysbiosis) is directly related to periodontal diseases, where Socransky's red complex, particularly the species Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia, play a fundamental role. Other relevant microorganisms such as Candida albicans, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans are also identified. The composition of the oral microbio...

Oral verruciform xanthoma is a benign inflammatory lesion of unknown etiology. It is a reactive, non-tumorous lesion affecting the oral mucosa, the semi-mucosa, and the skin of the extremities. Its clinical presentation consists of a single, elevated lesion with an irregular surface. Its microscopic characteristic is the accumulation of lipid-containing macrophages in the papillae of the connective tissue between the epithelial ridges. This report reviews the literature and presents a case of this pathology. The patient is an 11-year-old female who came for consultation with her guardian. Clinically, a single pale pink lesion approximately 4 mm in length, oval in shape with defined borders, rough, keratinized surface, firm consistency, and a base adhered to the tissue was observed. An excisional biopsy and histopathological study were performed. In conclusion, the diagnosis of verrucifor...

Design of Vanadium Antidiabetic Agents: Development and Recent AdvancesThe discovery of the enhanced hypoglycemic activity of bis(maltolate)oxovanadiu m (IV) (BMOV) compared to simplevanadium salts stimulated the design, synthesis and both in vitro and in vivo evaluation of a large variety of oxovanadium (IV)complexes with different organic ligands for their potential use as antidiabetic drugs that may be able to substitute, either partially or totally, the daily insulin injections used in the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus or the orally available hypoglycemic drugs usually used in combined therapy for type 2 diabetes.Recently, a close BMOV analogue, an ethyl substitute, has already successfully completed the phase 1 clinical trial in humans. The design of new types of complexes and the development of alternative delivery methods represent an active research field today.

Although the principle of consensualism is still the general rule in modern contracting, it is common, especially in complex and long-term commercial contracts, to include clauses limiting the parties’ freedom to modify or terminate them, unless certain formalities are observed. In this context, this paper analyses the so-called “no oral modification” clauses, putting forward the arguments for accepting their enforceability, as well as their limits, by means of the application of the doctrine of venire contra factum proprium.

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin disease with a complex genetic and pathogenic basis, often leading to significant comorbidities and a reduced quality of life. Its prevalence varies globally and exhibits an increasing trend over time. Comorbidities such as psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health issues further compound the burden of psoriasis. Treatment options range from topical therapies to systemic agents, with biologics playing a prominent role in recent years. However, the safety and efficacy of these treatments are continuously assessed through real-world data. Vitamin D has gained attention as a potential therapeutic target due to its role in immune regulation and skin barrier function. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy of oral vitamin D supplementation in ameliorating the severity of psoriasis. After bibliographic search, it was found th...
