The aim of this study was to determine the levels of leptin in broilers and laying hens by using a kit designed for human samples. Fasting blood samples were collected from 80 broilers of the Cobb 500 line of 4 weeks of age (40 females and 40 males) and 86 hens of 26 weeks of age (43 Lohmann Brown and 43 Hy-line). Leptin levels were determined by an ELISA sandwich, after validation of the kit for use in commercial poultry. The mean, minimum, maximum and standard deviation values of leptin for broilers were 0.61, 0.12, 3.99 and 0.10 ng/ml, respectively, without significant difference between sexes. Laying hens reported a mean, minimum, maximum and standard deviation values of 0.66, 0.16, 1.83 and 0.11 ng/ml, respectively, without significant difference between lines. Similarly, no statistical difference was found between broiler chickens and laying hens. The results of the stu...

The aim of this study was to determine the presence of leptin in adults alpacas, in order to quantify leptin values for these animals, and to relate them with body condition. For this purpose, 36 non pregnant and non nursing female adult alpacas were used. They were divided in two groups according to body condition (BC): G1: BC <3.0 and G2: BC>3.0, using the 1 to 5 scale (1: emaciate, 5: obese). Blood samples by jugular venipunction to obtain serum were taken. Serum samples were maintained at -20 ºC until analysis. The leptin determination was carried out by the radioimmunoassay technique (RIA). The mean of leptin concentration was 17.23 ± 0.81 ng/ml. Values for G1 were 18.14 ± 1.12 ng/ ml and for G2. were 16.32 ± 1.15 ng/ml, without statistical differences between groups. The results showed that the leptin hormone is also present in alpacas.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of ractopamine (RAC) and chromiumyeast (Cr-Lev) on the fatty acid profile, haematological parameters and serum leptin levels in finishing pigs. For this, 20 pigs of 63.2 ± 7.6 kg and 118 days of age were assigned to four treatments during the last 30 days of fattening. The treatments were T1: control group with basic food; T2: addition of 10 ppm/kg of RAC, and T3 and T4 with 0.2 and 0.4 ppm/kg of Cr-Lev without addition of RAC, respectively. Serum leptin levels were quantified at days 15 and 30, backfat thickness at day 30, and haematological analysis at days 0, 15, and 30 of the study. In addition, the profile of fatty acids in the meat was determined by gas chromatography. A completely randomized design with five replicates was used. The treatments affected the serum leptin concentration at 15 days (p<0.05), but not at 30 days. Lept...

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a syndrome of metabolic disorders with hyperglycemia, which produces an absolute or relative insulin deficiency. The effects of treatment of type II DM with Sitagliptin on lipid metabolism in general or particularly on homeostasis of body cholesterol have been scarcely studied. For this reason, the control of dyslipidemias in patients with type II DM is transcendental, the objective being: to determine the effect on total cholesterol levels of sitapgliptin, in Rattus rattus var. Albinus with streptozotocin induced diabetes. We followed an experimental, prospective longitudinal-sectional study, was selected 20 male albino rats; chosen at random, grouped into n = 10: Gl (Control group), with diabetes induced intraperitoneally in a dose of streptozotocin (40 mg / Kg) and G-II (experimental group), with diabetes induced with Streptozotocin (40mg / kg) and treated wi...

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is a disorder of endocrine and metabolic origin associated mainly to insulin, obesity and laminitis dysregulation. It is argued that the Colombian Creole horse (CCC) is predisposed to develop it; however, there are no specific studies for this breed. The objective of the study was to diagnose the EMS based on the relationship between obesity, regional adiposity, hyperinsulinemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperleptinemia and associate it with the development of clinical signs of laminitis in CCC horses in the savannah of Bogotá. Two groups were evaluated: 10 clinically healthy horses as a control group and 30 obese (body condition >7/9) with regional adiposity in the neck as clinical signs associated with the EMS. The levels of glucose, insulin, leptin and triglycerides were determined, as well as the combined insulin-glucose test (TIGC) in the two grou...
