Future time perspective extension is an individual's perception of the psychological distance between future goals. The concept of extension can be expanded to include how far into the future an individual habitual time space extends and the diffusion of goals within that time space. This alignment and distance may be related to the individual episodic future thinking, the pre-experiencing of future events. Research in FTP and EFT are typically siloed; considering both approaches to future thinking provides not only greater insight into the two constructs but may also provide avenues for developing interventions. Participants in this study (n = 13) were recruited from a scholarship program designed to provide them with financial support as they progress from community college to high-wage careers in science and engineering. Students were transitioning from two-year programs at local comm...

Focusing on our future is often associated with well-being, benefiting both the individual and society. However, the literature suggests that this relationship is not always consistent. Moreover, while this relationship has been studied in Lima from a subjective well-being perspective, it has not yet been explored using a psychological well-being framework. This study explores this relationship using Seigner’s, Nurmi, and Poole’s ‘Future Orientation’ and Diener et. al.’s ‘Flourishing’ constructs. Using data from 445 students from a Lima university (mean age=21.80; 64.27% females) and structural equation models, our results suggest that having a sense of internal control over one’s future career (b=.29, SE=.24, p<.01), approaching one’s future career with hope (b=.27, SE=.14, p<.01), and being optimistic about the realization of future family plans (b=.27, SE=.13, ...

This study sought to determine the relationships between Future Time Perspective, Self-Care Behaviors, and Mental Health, and to compare the results based on the adolescents' sex. A total of 181 adolescents participated and answered three questionnaires measuring each of the variables involved. The results of the structural model suggest that Future Time Perspective influences self-care behaviors, which impact mental health. Significant correlations were found between Future Time Perspective and self-care behaviors (r = 0.47, p < 0.001) and mental health problems (r = -.20, p < 0.001), as well as differences based on the adolescents' sex in self-care behaviors (t = 2.09, p < 0.05). The findings of this study contribute to the literature on mental health in adolescents with theoretical and practical implications, establishing an empirical model that links future time perspective ...

This study aims at systematizing and integrating research findings about Future Time Perspective (FTP) in Peruvian educational contexts. FTP is a motivational psychological variable that allows explaining the present behavior, considering goals set in the future.  The construct demonstrated its theoretical and empirical strength in different contexts. During the second half of the XXth Century Nuttin and Lens (1985) applied the variable in different fields, especially the educational one. Their proposal considered the cognitive and motivational properties of FTP; its density, extension and level of realism was then reported. Empirical research has been conducted to date under this theoretical background; however, a decade ago this concept was redirected to a multidimensional proposal conceptualized as Future Orientation (FO) considering three components: motivational, cognitive and beha...

Future Time Perspective (FTP) is defined as a cognitive-motivational construct of an individual’s perception of their personal future. How do people consciously construct their FTP? This study presents case studies using both daily data (over 19 days) and longitudinal data (spanning 33 years), focusing on how goal-directedness (a measure of FTP) and hope interact to shape their trajectories. The results show that hope is high when individuals experience a connection between the present and future, accompanied by the integration of affect, cognition, and behavior. In contrast, perceived uncertainty reduces hope. Importantly, goal-directedness increases when individuals consciously set goals, make plans, and take actions for the future. This study sheds light on the conscious construction of FTP by being among the first to examine within-individual variability by combining both daily and...

Children’s understanding of mental states and their temporal and spatial perspective-taking abilities change substantially during early childhood. It has been proposed that these abilities converge on common mechanisms based on self-projection. Also, remembering and prospection are thought to jointly support human capacity for mental time travel. This study explores the behavioral congruence of perspective-taking abilities by assessing episodic memory, episodic future thinking, theory of mind, and visual perspective-taking in 85 children aged four to six in Uruguay. We found no overall associations, except for theory of mind (false beliefs) and episodic future thinking. Results are discussed in the light of conceptual implications of the tasks, while we argue that enhancing equivalence in task design is essential for advancing future research.

It is necessary to review reproductive surgery from the perspective of in vitro fertilization (IVF) preparatory treatment. When hydrosalpinx is present, laparoscopic salpingectomy is required before entering to an IVF program, considering that surgery does not compromise ovarian stimulation or pregnancy rates with respect to patients with healthy fallopian tubes. As rates of implantation and pregnancy are not altered by endometriosis, carrying the patient to surgery risks is not worth. Faced with tubal ligation, best results are achieved when clips were applied in the middle of the isthmus and worst results when the procedure removed the distal end of the fimbria. Patients with less than 4 cm subserosal or intramural fibroids that do not alter the uterine cavity have IVF / ICSI results similar to those that do not have them, and do not require myomectomy. In cases of recurrent pregnancy ...

This study introduced and evaluated ‘Grow for it!’, a school-based multicomponent intervention designed to enhance adolescents’ Future Time Perspective (FTP) and Growth Mindset (GM) to reduce school stress and improve learning and motivation. A total of 323 Dutch students were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The intervention group showed a significant decrease in test anxiety over time, and reported higher FTP, learning investment, GM, and intrinsic motivation at post-test. However, these effects did not persist longitudinally, limiting evidence of the intervention’s overall effectiveness. Nevertheless, our study provided valuable insights into the combined potential of FTP and GM in influencing academic outcomes and highlighted the need for more research about the role of positive adaptive beliefs.

The study presented aims to promote and understand the agent commitment of students, future educators, in initial education through an expanded educational experience in order to proactively rethink their professional role. Participated 41 students from the Faculty and the Bachelor of Initial Education, who were studying the third year of the career at the National University of Río Cuarto, Argentina. Under an interpretive qualitative design, an expansive educational experience was designed so that students could proactively rethink their professional role from their agencies, based on an activity that proposed going to the territory, specifically, walking the city, in search of art to teach. Data were collected in three moments, during the investigation almost finished and already concluded. The results show that students develop proactive actions and emotions that motivate rethinking ...
