How do we understand? A pivot proposalThe basic question is what it is needed to understand. The proposal is that understanding requires pivots, a useful word to integrate findings in different areas. In that sense, a pivot can be understood as a mental model. It can also be the body, an idea based on embodied cognition. But more fundamentally, our biology and brain are the central pivots for understanding. Therefore, this essay can be seen as a brief travel through three different subjects: Mental Models, Embodied Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience, all of which are necessary to understand how a person understands.

We use the approach of Qu and Perron (2013) for the modeling and inference of volatility of a set of commodity prices in the presence of level shifts of unknown timing, magnitude and frequency. The model has two features: (i) it is a stochastic volatility model comprising both a level shift and a short-memory process where the .rst component is modeled as a compounded binomial process while the second one is an AR(1) process; (ii) the model is estimated using Bayesian techniques in order to obtain posterior distributions of the parameters and the two latent components. We use six commodity series: agriculture, livestock, gold, oil, industrial metals and a general commodity index. All series cover the period from January 1983 until December 2013 in daily frequency. The objective of this study is to identify factors influencing product purchase choices in the sample market of Chachapoyas using structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS v.24 software. The sample of 384 customers was composed mostly of women (60%) and young people aged 18 to 30 years (55%), and it was found that personal characteristics such as age, lifestyle and financial situation influenced purchase decisions. The results showed that cultural, social and psychological factors did not have a significant effect. The usefulness of SEM for studying the interaction between multiple variables and validating theoretical models in non-experimental settings was confirmed. Purpose – The traditional one-stage constant growth formula has two main underlying assumptions: a company will be able to maintain its competitive advantage for completed investments in perpetuity and each year in the future it will be able to generate new investment opportunities with the same competitive advantage which will also remain in perpetuity. This paper deals with the model of constitutional control in Peru. The author comes to historical, conceptual and jurisprudential sources for, on the one hand, identify and understand the context that gives rise to its origin and secondly, to analyze its procedural operation in Peru, baring the deficiencies that presents. Hence it is claimed that the Peruvian judicial review is a “model even put together”. Finally, it states that the exploration of judicial review serves to clarify some concepts that link it very closely with constitutional interpretation, in the light not only of what holds the current comparison doctrine but also its reception in the jurisprudence of the Peruvian Constitutional Court.

This article presents a synthesis of the main investigations and archaeological evidence related to the Paracas phenomenon of the southern Peruvian coast, which developed during much of the first millennium before our era (800-200 BC). The main investigations, the chronology, the territory covered and the main settlements associated with the material culture linked to this social phenomenon are presented and discussed. Finally, a model of social explanation is presented to understand the social dynamics that allowed the appearance of what is known in archaeological literature as the «Paracas Culture».

En este artículo se presenta una síntesis de las principales investigaciones y evidencias arqueológicas relacionadas con el fenómeno Paracas de la costa sur peruana, el cual se desarrolló durante gran parte del primer milenio antes de nuestra era (800-200 a.C.). Se presentan y discuten las principales investigaciones, la cronología, el territorio que abarcó y los principales asentamientos asociados con la cultura material vinculada con este fenómeno social. Finalmente, se presenta un modelo de explicación social para comprender las dinámicas sociales que permitieron la aparición de lo que es conocido en la literatura arqueológica como la «Cultura Paracas».

BERT produces state-of-the-art solutions for many natural language processing tasks at the cost of interpretability. As works discuss the value of BERT’s attention weights to this purpose, we contribute with an attention-based interpretability framework to identify the most influential words for stance classification using BERT-based models. Unlike related work, we develop a broader level of interpretability focused on the overall model behavior instead of single instances. We aggregate tokens’ attentions into words’ attention weights that are more meaningful and can be semantically related to the domain. This article raises questions about the relevance for the early grades of schooling models of reading instruction emerged from research on phonological awareness. Several studies have suggested the existence of different levels involved in reading. However, these levels are not seen in the early grades teaching practice guided by the models discussed here. Rather, these models point to an almost exclusive lexical learning of language, leaving aside the semantic construction processes that take place when reading.
