Introduction: Cat-scratch disease most of the times is described reporting its typical form; systemic forms are rare and they are seldom reported. Cat-scratch disease may have a great variety of presentations, and some of them are quite unusual. This is the very first time that the systemic form is reported in Peru.Clinical case: We present two girls, 5 and 6 years old, hospitalized in the pediatric ward of Hospital Nacional Carlos Alberto Seguin, EsSalud, Arequipa, Peru, who presented with the systemic form of cat scratch disease. Both girls were scratched by kittens without developing a characteristic local reaction, and they presented with prolonged fever, malaise, anorexia, headache, abdominal pain, lymph node enlargement, liver and spleen involvement, accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, high levels of C-reactive protein, leukocytosis, left shift, slightly elevated ...

Social networks revolutionized communication in the world, transformed the media into broadcast media where users shared information of different kinds. For example, users of social networks in Chile posted photographs of wildlife including felines such as Leopardus colocola (Molina, 1872). If social media users published their findings in a selfless, altruistic and honest way, then they will serve as a tool for ecology research in the future. Under this consideration, the objective of this work was to establish if social networks can be constituted as a data source to know sites of presence of L. colocola in Chile, in comparison with the records published in scientific media. Considering that the privacy and use policies allow the use of the information from the networks, between January and April 2021, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter were searched for publications about the sp...

The aim of this study was to describe a series of cases of hemoplasmosis in domestic cats in the city of Ibagué (Colombia), and the first report of Mycoplasma haemominutum in the country. Blood samples from patients admitted to the outpatient service of the Small Animal Clinic of the University of Tolima were analyzed by conventional PCR for the amplification of the 16s ribosomal gene to obtain a final product of 194 bb. In addition, hematic biometrics and serology were performed for viral diseases (Anigen FIV Ab/FeLV Ag Test kit). The amplicons obtained were subjected to sequencing and bioinformatic analysis (Geneious® 8.1.9). It was found hypochromic normocytic anemia in two cats, leukocytosis in a cat and thrombocytopenia in four of them. Two were seropositive for feline immunodeficiency virus antibodies and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) antigens and one was seropositive for FeLV. Sa...

Maria Rilke and Balthazar Klossowski –Balthus–, which took the form of a book entitled Mitsou. Story of a Cat, illustrated by the young painter and foreworded by the poet. This case study serves as a guiding thread running through a deep analysis of the problem of the “Open”, a noumenic concept coined by Rilke in his creative exchange with Balthus. This concept was specifically discussed by Martin Heidegger. Thus, the present paper attempts to address the implications of affinity and confrontation between Rilke and Heidegger and to explore the metaphorical figure of the cat as the expression of certain animality within the unveiling that takes place in the Da-sein. For this purpose, it will also be necessary to explore theoretical key approaches taken from Ortega y Gasset and Schopenhauer, as well as critical positions particularly relevant in this field defended by Giorgio ...

The aim of this study was to systematically review the scientific evidence of diseases associated with bronchiectasis in cats, providing a better approach to diagnostic tests and related treatment. The OVID®, SciELO Citation Index® and Redalyc® search platforms were used. A research question was defined, and search terms were used to find relevant articles in the databases. Only original articles and case reports published in indexed journals and under peer review processes were considered, then filtered by title, abstract and full text. Subsequently, the reference lists of the definitive articles were searched for additional information (snowballing). Eight definitive articles were considered for the presentation of results and discussion (seven published in English and one in Spanish, between 1993 and 2019). From the information collected in the eight studies, it can be inferred tha...

Cat scratch's disease caused by Bartonella henselae, is known to be a self-limited benign process in immunocompetent children. The association with neurologic manifestations is very uncommon especially in patient with no immunologic defects and in cases without specific treatment. A 7 years old male patient, without any immunocompromised defect, presented an atypic presentation of the cat scratch disease. The patient came to the hospital in two opportunities in a status epilepticus, in both cases the diagnosis was encephalitis by Bartonella henselae and the evolution with treatment was monitored with PCR (polymerase chain reaction) in cerebrospinal fluid and blood, as well as IFI (IgM, IgG) serology (indirect immunofluorescence). The patient had a favorable clinical and laboratory evolution for 6 months showing no recurrence of the disease.

The case of two cats with recurrent rectal prolapse is presented; 3- and 5-month-old male and female, respectively. The clinical examination revealed two patients with body condition 2/5, pale mucous membranes, dehydration and a prolapse of approximately 6 cm of the rectum with the presence of housefly larval structures. The tutor reports that a month before the consultation, the cats were rescued and underwent digital reduction with suture in the anus as a corrective measure for a first rectal prolapse that recurred fifteen days after said intervention. As an urgent corrective measure, and after stabilizing the patients, a colopexy was performed through celiotomy, using polyglactin 910 for this purpose. There were no intraoperative and postoperative complications. During 12 months after colopexy, there was no recurrence of prolapse in any of the patients.
