In the western hemisphere the domestication of animals is focused on the Andes. Compared to the Near East, which is another center of domestication, the origin of the Andean is little known. This may be due, in part, to the fact that domesticated animals in South America did not have the economic importance of Old World animals, so their study has not been an urgent problem. However, the Andean center of domestication is an area in which the process of animal domestication can be studied and therefore offers the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the development of the close relationship that exists between man and domesticated animals.

An assessment of part of a family planning program is presented in a social environment characterized by high fertility, low contraceptive use and knowledge and great interest in information and practice of family planning methods. Accidental pregnancy rates and subsequent expulsions are similar to those found in urban environments and sea level. By contrast, first expulsions rates are higher than those established for suburban and metropolitan populations sea level, so it could be considered an effect of biological, possibly related to altitude conditions. The application of IUDs appears to face a number of problems arising from the socio-cultural status of the population. Although theoretically would be the most useful means of contraception in Cerro de Pasco, its use is affected by the limited knowledge of patients on the characteristics of the method, which makes it sensitive to the ...

This case study discusses a problem identified in the global literature: the difficulty of national states in translating their policy instruments for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into effective actions at the local territorial level. We review two perspectives on the territory and modes of intervention: (i) those of government agencies within the Huascarán Biosphere Reserve in Áncash and (ii) those deployed by local organizations in the context of a disaster risk reduction project. The case study presents evidence on the potential of participatory approaches to generate information that can help identify strategies that align adaptation and risk reduction actions to local well-being objectives and productive systems. It is concluded that there is a need to develop collaborative learning spaces between state agencies and communities to improve the effectiveness...

Reversible actions and reactions between organism and environment in regard to life upon the American high plateaus lead to en adaptative process whose goal is acclimatization. As a consequence of the alluded interactions the organism may become adjusted either to live in the altitude individual acclimatization or to Iive and to reproduce, race acclimatization. To the author this phase of adjustment (adaptation) implies a form of Mountain Sickness to which he was the first to call attention in 1928. When Mountain Sickness is cured, acclimatization supervenes. Some men never get acclimatized. They develop Chronic Mountain Sickness and die. A form of survival is migration to the low lands. The environment assailment-climatic aggresion,-may be defined as the noxious action of the Andean climate ("temple", from the Greek, meaning "dwelling-place") upon the dwellers from low lands and that of...

Metals are transported, spatially and temporally, through the ground surface and the atmosphere, generating environmental and social problems in populations located in the hydrographic basins. The present study aimed to determine sources and metal levels in water sediments in the micro-basin of the Huancaray river in Apurímac region (Peru), using the X-ray fluorescence analysis technique (XRF) during the dry and rainy season of 2018 and 2019. The elements detected were K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Br, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb and Ba. At each point and sampling period, critical elements have been found, as Zn, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni and As; concentrations are above permissible limits; likewise, in the rainy and dry seasons there are no significant differences, while the main sources of pollution are populated centers; agricultural practices; presence of illegal mining; and source o...

Mountain regions face decisive challenges, not only for their sustainable development but also fortheir very reproduction. These challenges have to do with the increasingly serious impact of climate and environmental change, the impact of socioeconomic and cultural globalization on mountain populations and the ecosystems they inhabit, and the effects of urbanization on mountain agriculture. Based on these premises, this article introduces the notion of “montology” by investigating, on the one hand, the historical development of the term and, on the other, by presenting the essential principles of a perspective committed to building a real transdisciplinarity in mountain studies. Finally, through the example of urbanization and its impact on Andean agriculture, we intend to highlight the need to adopt a montological perspective in order to contribute to the analysis of human environme...

The Peruvian government enacted a new law granting consultation rights to indigenous peoples as a mechanism to enhance social inclusion in the country. The law generated debates about the criteria to identify indigenous population in the Andean region. Why does this law have problems granting consultation rights to Andean people? This paper aims to answer the question by reviewing historically the different Andean identities and analyzing the current international debate on indigenity. Our main argument is that the government intrying to apply the law is structuring a restrictive model that is hardlyable to grasp the complexity and dynamism of Andean identities.
