This research was aimed at determining to what extent factors prior to university admission, motivational factors, and institutional experiences explain the academic persistence of students in the University Leveling Term (CIU) at the Simon Bolivar University - Coastal Campus. An explanatory-type quantitative study was proposed, which involved a non-experimental cross-sectional retrospective causal relationship design. The sample consisted of 101 students (50.5% female) with an average age of 17.90 years (SD = 2.37). The study found a significant relationship between some variables explaining academic persistence, which were: a) having a lower orientation toward academic goals; b) a higher score on the maladaptive pattern; c) a higher score in the perception of the Mathematics professor’s evaluation; and d) a higher score in the final performance. This set of variables explains 56.4% o...

In this paper we study the well-posedness of Cauchy problem for a Boussinesq system formed by two Kortewegde Vries equations coupled through the linear part and the non-linear terms. First we proof its local well-posednessin the Sobolev spaces Hs (R) x Hs (R), s > -3/4, using the bilinear estimate established by Kenig, Ponce and Vega in the Fourier transform restriction spaces [4, 12]. After, we prove the global well-posedness in Hs (R) x Hs (R) for s > -3/10, our proof proceeds by the method of almost conservation laws, sometimes called the “I-method”[5, 6].

This paper develops the analogy between flash distillation and membrane gas separations using a complete mixing module. Methods are provided for calculating the bubble point and the permeate flux as a function of membrane area. Example calculations are presented in the case of gas mixtures: Oxygen-Nitrogen (membrane selectivity = 2.2) and Carbon Dioxide-Methane (membrane selectivity = 31.25). The results show that the selectivity of the membrane has a marked effect on the membrane area required for the separation. Likewise, the permeate flux increases with the area of membrane but the slope of the change is strongly influenced by the selectivity of the membrane. The methods developed in this work can be easily extended to separations or multistage cascade, and for any number of components in the mixture to be separated.

Objetive. To observe the types of soft facial profile according to the angles of facial convexity (FCA) and total facial convexity (TFCA), in addition to evaluating their relationship with the distal position of the primary second molars in children between 3 and 5 years. Methods. Twenty-eight out of 200 children with complete primary dentition were examined to determine the distal relation of primary second molars, and a digital photographic examination of their lateral profile was performed to evaluate the ACF and ACFT. With the Fisher's exact test, soft tissue profiles were compared according to age and gender, and with Student t test for a single sample, the angular averages were evaluated. Results. The mean of the FCA was 167.1 ° ± 5.1, and the TFCA was 145.8 ° ± 3.7. A high convexity of the FCA was observed in 21.4% of the children, medium in 60.7% and low in 17.9%. While in th...

Background: In Peru, the current immunization schedule for COVID-19 includes BBIBP-CorV, BNT162B2 and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccines. Although the full immunization schedule is two doses, some countries have recently included a booster dose to their schedule. Methods: We conducted a search for scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of booster vaccination with BNT162b2 vaccine in a population with a complete vaccination schedule for COVID-19 in Peru. Evidence: Four evidence-based recommendation documents, one observational study and three ongoing phase III clinical trials were included for analysis. Conclusion: To date, there is insufficient evidence on the efficacy of adding a booster dose to the immunization schedule for COVID-19. The available evidence does not justify the use of a booster dose of BNT162B2 vaccine in a population that has previously received two doses of the aforemen...

Complete unilateral palatine fissure affects the region of the middle facial third and individuals born with this condition have altered structures on the side where the malformation developed. The objective of the present case report was to describe a pre-surgical orthopedics alternative in a female infant of 1 month 5 days of age with complete unilateral palatine fissure diagnosed with complete unilateral left palatine fissure. The Hinostroza nasal retractor modification was placed, allowing symmetry to the affected nasal structure with respect to the unaffected side. This procedure provides good results, low cost and easy handling and should be considered as an alternative treatment in neonates born with complete unilateral palatine fissure.
