With the arrival of the pandemic due to Covid-19, the worsening of citizen insecurity and the rise of the new government, the nature of voluntary military service has been debated, seeking to make it part of a public policy that addresses young people. Against this background, at the social level some debates have been developed that point out before the importance of understanding the structural bases of youth. Starting from this approach, the following paper presents a review that shows the trajectory and scope of the exercise of voluntary military service in contemporary Peru. The structure of the text is based on two thematic axes: studies and approaches to military service and military service in the political agendas of governments. Interest in the exercise of military service in Latin America and its variants is part of a large body of research and there is a varied literature on ...

This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork I conducted between January and March of 2007 in a small rural village on the north coast of Peru as part of the research for my Master’s Degree thesis. It addresses the ways that the rural youth give their own school experience. During the fieldwork, I lived in Chaquira for two months and conducted 18 in depth interviews with young people. I also visited the local high school and had informal conversations with different demographic groups in the village, mainly young parents (between 30 and 45 years old). Based on a definition of citizenship and a description of the youth’s every day life, this paper analyzes the processes of exclusion, not only as a structural problem, but also as the situation of internal oppression within a determined social space. The objective is to think about social space of rural youth as spaces th...

This article analyzes the cultural magazines of the 1920s and early 1930s as a space for interaction and convergence between young progressive Chileans and Peruvians. These publications were a product of the University Reform and Chilean-Peruvian tensions and became centers of camaraderie, discussion and circulation of ideas, which would be transformed in the following years into political action and solidarity. The case of the Peruvian APRA exiles supported by Chilean socialists represents one of the most important and intense moments of collaboration in the bilateral history of the two countries.

In 1911, Eloy Fariña Núñez published in Buenos Aires the long poem Canto secular to commemorate the centenary of Paraguay’s independence. The work displays a modernist stamp, but it also involves some features of Arielism, a Latin American political philosophy that brought youth to the fore and recognized a double American and Greco-Latin cultural ancestry. This article proposes an intertextual and interdiscursive approach to Canto secular, in order to discover in the poem a literary operation of foundation of an enunciative locus where two spatiotemporal coordinates, both literary recreated, overlap: the peasant Paraguay in the transition towards urbanity, and classical antiquity synthesized in some legal values and models.

It is necessary that the health authorities establish comprehensive programs for prevention and treatment of addictions in youth, to control the pandemic currently extién...

In this article we problematize the notion of roots from the perspectives of young people in post-pandemic rural Argentina, focusing on the somatic and symbolic ways in which young people inhabit rural worlds. We wonder about the ways of inhabiting rural youth today, as well as the constitution of youth identities linked to symbols, aesthetics and rural corporalities. For this, we present a comparative analysis of two cases of young people who live in scattered rural areas of the northeast and Argentine Patagonia. We consider information from two qualitative investigations that combine the use of interviews, observations, and workshops with young people. The analysis is organized in three dimensions. In the first place, we characterize the future projects of young people and the carnal and digit-carnal youth displacements and spatialities between the countryside, the city and the town. S...
