The study of the microbiological quality of sea water in the beaches near any city is of the outmost importance in order to know the potential impact on the health of the population using the coastal areas as playgrounds. The presence of many bacterial species, such as coliforms (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter-Enterobacter spp.), Enterococci spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Clostridium perfringens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Salmonella spp., tends to correlate with the occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, nausea or abdominal pain) in bathers as well as in people eating fresh sea products. The study was performed with students from the Microbiology course in Universidad Ricardo Palma Medical School. Random and stratified samples were collected from La Chira beach during June 2009 (winter in Lima). It is worth mentioning that La Chira ...

A case of pulmonar parasitosis caused by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in (Railliet, 1898) a adult cat is described, with clinical monitoring, laboratory and imaging test, and treatment for 14 months. During follow-up, the cat presented larvae of A. abstrusus in the Baermann parasitological methods and in the fecal smear with treatments and relapses of the parasite in the exams. Radiographic images showed diffuse opacification of the lung fields with an interstitial pattern, tending to alveolar, with visualization of thickened bronchial walls, related to an inflammatory/infectious process. The persistence of lungworm disease is discussed and the treatment.

Interviews, crucial for journalistic practice and qualitative research, capture the profound meaning of human thought. In 2023, artificial intelligence (AI) tools became widespread, including their use in recording, transcribing, and subtitling speeches. The study aims to identify the most suitable AI for transcribing recordings in Spanish, prioritizing task completeness, efficiency, and effectiveness. The selected AI will be applied to a corpus of 450 short interviews, which will then be coded and analyzed for content. The article focuses on four Spanish-language AI transcription tools: Office 365 (Word) Transcribe, Amazon Transcribe, Notta, and Whisper. The technology allows harnessing the richness of the original recording without the intervention, and potential modification, of the person or virtual assistant transcribing it. The results highlight the speed of transcription and the a...

Western South America was one of the worldwide cradles of civilization. The well-known Inca Empire was the tip of the iceberg of an evolutionary process that started 11,000 to 14,000 years ago. Genetic data from 18 Peruvian populations reveal the following: 1) The between-population homogenization of the central southern Andes and its differentiation with respect to Amazonian populations of similar latitudes do not extend northward. Instead, longitudinal gene flow between the northern coast of Peru, Andes, and Amazonia accompanied cultural and socioeconomic interactions revealed by archeology. This pattern recapitulates the environmental and cultural differentiation between the fertile north, where altitudes are lower, and the arid south, where the Andes are higher, acting as a genetic barrier between the sharply different environments of the Andes and Amazonia. 2) The genetic homogeniza...

Trypanosomatids are a group of kinetoplastid parasites including some of great public health importance, causing debilitating and life-long lasting diseases that affect more than 24 million people worldwide. Among the trypanosomatids, Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma brucei and species from the Leishmania genus are the most well studied parasites, due to their high prevalence in human infections. These parasites have an extreme genomic and phenotypic variability, with a massive expansion in the copy number of species-specific multigene families enrolled in host-parasite interactions that mediate cellular invasion and immune evasion processes. As most trypanosomatids are heteroxenous, and therefore their lifecycles involve the transition between different hosts, these parasites have developed several strategies to ensure a rapid adaptation to changing environments. Among these strategies, a...

Since their origins, vascular land plants have coexisted with a wide variety of bacteria and fungi. When insects appeared, they also maintained a close relationship with them, taking on a big role with the arrival of flowering plants in the early Cretaceous period. The different evolutionary processes have led to the development of a series of interspecific interactions; some of them beneficial for both parties, such as the various pollination mechanisms throu- gh insects in many plant species. At the same time, other types of interactions have emerged with species capable of producing severe diseases in different sections of the plant. This evolutionary pressure with the inability of a defense offered by locomotion, and the lack of a defense system based on antibodies, have been the main responsible for the appearance of com- plex defense mechanisms in plants, many times rapid and effec...

We review the latest insigths on the understanding of immununosenenscense, or aging of the inmune systeni. This process results from the interaction between bothl inborn (genetic) and acquired (nutritional status, lifestyle, and host-parasitic interaction) features. Among genetic features, genetically controled expression of HLA system molecules on inmune cells and possible linkage of some allelies expression to longer longevity stand out. Other main features are changes of the aged patient inmune system and understand of of thymus involution as well as changes in the distribution, quality, and quantilty of lympliocyte sub-populations. Another ¡nmunosenescence factor is the niodification ¡n the production of cytokines, regulatory liorniones of the inmune system. Adequate understanding of above factors will lead to prevention follow-up, and inmune intervention of aged pat...

On the leading role of values for the development of identity and ensuring the effective adaptation of migrants to the new ethnocultural environment, during the research process, we set the task to identify the values of migrants living in Azerbaijan. At the same time, such factors as the length of residence in the country and the age of the respondents were taken into account. The study involved 235 migrants, of whom 98 are Koreans and 137 Turks, who have been living in Azerbaijan for at least five years, aged 18-40. There are 55 women among Koreans, 43 men, 87 men and 50 women among Turks. The results of our study showed that the lower the level of national identity, the greater the opportunity for migrants to choose a marginal adaptation strategy. This behavior strategy leads to dissatisfaction, social and psychological safety of the migrant. Having lost the values of their culture, t...

In this study, we analyzed the contribution of NH4I and glycerol on the ionic conductivity of carboxymethyl κ/ι-hybrid carrageenan-based solid bio-electrolytes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to assess the electrochemical properties of the developed biopolymeric films and their interfaces over a wide range of frequencies (1& Hz–7& MHz). X-ray diffractograms demonstrated the increment of the amorphous fraction in the material as the NH4I content increases, suggesting an enhancement of ion transport processes and the successful incorporation of the salt into the host matrix. The shift of the OH peaks in the FTIR spectra confirmed the interaction between carboxymethyl carrageenan, NH4I, and glycerol. EIS results were represented in the complex plane and were fitted to an Rs(R1Q1) equivalent circuit. The ionic conductivity for carboxymethyl carrageenan doped with xNH4I (...

The prediction of host human miRNA binding to the SARS-COV-2-CoV-2 RNA sequence is of particular interest. This biological process could lead to virus repression, serve as biomarkers for diagnosis, or as potential treatments for this disease. One source of concern is attempting to uncover the viral regions in which this binding could occur, as well as how these miRNAs binding could affect the SARS-COV-2 virus's processes. Using extracted sequence features from this base pairing, we predicted the relationships between miRNAs that interact with genes involved in immune function and bind to the SARS-COV-2 genome in their 5' UTR region. We compared two supervised models, SVM and Random Forest, with an unsupervised One-Class SVM. When the results of the confusion matrices were inspected, the results of the supervised models were misleading, resulting in a Type II error. However, with the latt...
