Objective: To establish the usefulness of plasma concentrations of angiopoietin-2 in the second trimester of pregnancy as a predictor of the development of preeclampsia. Design: Case-control study. Setting: Hospital Central “Dr. Urquinaona”, Maracaibo, Venezuela. Participants: Nulliparous pregnant women. Interventions: 504 nulliparous women between 17-20 weeks pregnant who assisted to prenatal control were studied; 41 developed preeclampsia and were considered cases (group A) and 463 did not develop preeclampsia and were considered controls (group B). Main outcome measures: General characteristics, plasma angiopoietin-2 concentrations and prognosis efficacy. This work has been initiated by the incessant concern about the research of erythropoietin, which corresponds to one of the large and important chapters of Hematology. This research work is developed in the Institute of Andean Biology, Faculty of Medicine, San Fernando, with a central laboratory in Lima, and another in the mining town of Morococha, to 4.540 meters above sea level, located in the Central Sierra of Peru. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection has created a pandemic leading to a global struggle to cope with the sheer numbers of infected persons, many of whom require intensive care support. To date, there is no specific antivirus treatment for COVID-19. The use of convalescent plasma transfusions could be of great value in the current pandemic. Recently recovered SARS-CoV-2 patients who may be suitable donors undergo apheresis in order to obtain convalescent plasma containing high-titer antibodies, granted they meet blood donation criteria. The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of four seminal plasma dilutions on ovulation rate and corpus luteum development in alpacas. Forty four non-lactating alpacas with the presence of a >7 mm dominant follicle detected by transrectal ultrasonography were selected. The animals were randomly distributed in five experimental groups: G1 (n=10) seminal plasma (SP) diluted 1:1 (v/v) with phosphate buffered saline (PBS); G2 (n=10) SP diluted 1:2 (v/v) with PBS; G3 (n=10) SP diluted 1:4 (v/v) with PBS; G4 (n=10) SP 1:8 (v/v) with PBS; and G5 (n=4) control group with PBS. Los sedimentos del lago Titicaca contienen metales pesados de origen minero, sugiriendo la contaminación de las granjas de peces que se desarrollan en sus aguas. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la concentración de metales pesados en los músculos de truchas arcoíris (Oncorhynchus mykiss) criadas en la zona noreste del lago Titicaca (3812 msnm), ubicado en las provincias de Puno y Huancané, Perú. This thesis describes the plasma generated by the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique and its application to the detection of cadmium and lead in soil samples. It addresses the laser-sample interaction, plasma formation, radiation emission, material ablation, and the local thermodynamic equilibrium model. A protocol is developed to prepare standards in soil samples with known concentrations of cadmium (50-1000 ppm) and lead (1000 -10 000 ppm).
