We present an updated list of bird species from Department of Loreto. The list is based on the review of specimens from scientific collections, historical records, publications, and field observations. We report 1040 species of birds in Loreto, 72 in some threat category, 72 migratory and 13 endemics to Peru. Percnostola arenarum, Pithys castaneus and Polioptila clementsi are endemics to Loreto. The families with the highest numbers of species are Tyrannidae, Thamnophilidae and Thraupidae. The list presented is highly reliable due to the support of about 81% of the species on specimens from scientific collections and only 1.5% from sighting reports by ornithologists. Bird species from Loreto represent about 55% of the total reported for Peru and in Passeriformes 52% of those estimated for the Amazonia. The distribution of reports shows that it is necessary to explore areas close to the r...

In this study, we present the species of the genus Gynoxys recorded in the department of Amazonas, Peru. From March 2021 to October 2023, a review of exsiccata preserved in national herbaria, virtual databases of international herbaria, and field collections in different localities was carried out. We report 22 species of Gynoxys in Amazonas, of which two are new records for Peru and six are first reports for Amazonas. The genus is mainly distributed in the southern part of the department, inhabiting mainly moorlands and high altimontane forests of the Yungas, mostly located above 2900 meters above sea level (m a.s.l).

COVID-19 hit the Amazonian indigenous communities of Peru for two consecutive years, forcing them to recover traditional knowledge, practices and strategies to combat it. We present the plant and animal species used by two Ticuna communities in the Peruvian Amazon during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing the preparation and administration of the preparations. The information was obtained from semi-structured interviews with men and women from the communities during the first two waves of the pandemic, from May 2020 to June 2021. The interviews were face-to-face, in the field work carried out in the communities, and virtual, using the telephone and messaging applications available in the communities or in the nearby major population centers. During the field work in Nueva Galilea, visits were made to the collection points of the plant species. Fourteen plant species and three animal speci...

In this work, an updated list of species of bats from Loreto is presented, this was elaborated using information of databases, zoological collections, and specialized literature. The results confirm Loreto as the most diverse department of Peru with 114 species of bats grouped into 7 families (19.9% of the Peruvian mastofauna), which include two of the nine endemic species to Peru: Micronycteris (Micronycteris) matses and Hsunycteris dashe. Additionally, 444 different locations were found with specimen records, located mainly along rivers. Species recorded in four or less different locations are considered rare, while species recorded in 111 or more different locations are considered common. We present a map of the Loreto ecoregions with the different localities, both historical and contemporary, as well as a map of density of locations per 25 km2, which identifies 6 areas of information...

The aim of this study was to identify the role of domestic dogs as reservoirs of Leptospira spp and Toxoplasma gondii in the Rural Community of Corosha, department of Amazonas, Peru, through the analysis of prevalence and epidemiological characteristics, as well as tenure associated with dog positivity. A survey was carried out on the dog owners and blood samples were taken. In total, 55 samples were analyzed by the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) for the identification of anti-Leptospira spp antibodies and 62 samples with the Indirect Hemagglutination technique (HAI) for anti-T. gondii. The seroprevalence of Leptospira spp was 82.3%, detecting antibodies against the Grippotyphosa (58.2%), Icterohaemorrhagiae (54.6%), Pomona (40.0%), Canicola (32.7%), Bratislava (30.9%) and Georgia (21.8%) serovars. Dogs with access to the river showed a higher prevalence of Leptospira (94.9%) compa...

In the last years the Awajún people, settled in the Río Cenepa watershed (Department of Amazonas, Peru) are struggling to defend their land from the impact of the mining activities in the Cordillera del Condor mountains. The myth of Kumpanan, an ancestor associated to the homonymous pick, located in the mining area, has been revitalized, with a new meaning, mirroring the current social and environmental contingency of the area. This contributes to rethink the linkages existing between «history» and «myth».

We present the record of the consumption and transfer of leaves of two species, Cynophalla flexuosa and Colicodendron scabridum (Capparaceae) by the bats Artibeus planirostris and Artibeus fraterculus, respectively. The finding was made in two localities of the province of Bagua and Utcubamba, department of Amazonas, between the months of January and March 2012, during an evaluation for bats for an Environmental Impact Estudy for 2D Sismic Prospecting and drilling of 02 wells in block 145, zone 1, ERM company. We installed 10 nets of mist in each sampling point, the nets were evaluated from 18:00 to 00:00 hours. Artibeus planirostris was captured in January, carrying in its mouth one leaf of Cynophalla flexuosa, and expelling pellets of this, while A. fraterculus was found in March, carrying one leaf of Colicodendron scabridum; both bats were pregnant females. We are presumed that these ...
