This article is the result of the application of Six Sigma methodology to improve compliance with scheduled dates in services performed by a calibration laboratory at the customer’s facilities. Through its five phases, Six Sigma methodology makes it possible to define the problem in a specific and quantitative way, measuring the performance of the affected process, identifying and analyzing the root causes, as well as establishing the actions to overcome problems and the controls to maintain the improvements. In this way, the laboratory increases the compliance with scheduled dates from 56.2% to 70.3%, as well as the level of customer satisfaction from 72.3% to 84.6%.

Dearth of information exists on the effects of planting dates and genotypes on grasshopper (Zonocerus variegatus L.) infestation and dry matter accumulation in the root organ of cassava. An experiment was conducted at the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences Experimental site of Njala University site during 2007/2008 and 2015/2016 cropping seasons. This study assessed the effects of planting date and cassava genotypes on grasshopper infestation and root dry matter accumulation in cassava. The experiment utilized four cassava genotypes (Cocoa, SLICASS 1, SLICASS 4 and SLICASS 6) and three planting dates (June, September and December) laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Findings showed that the incidence and severity of grasshopper attacks, as well as root dry matter contents were significantly (p<0.05) different between variety and planting...

No data to crawl? Monolingual corpus creation from PDF files of truly low-resource languages in Peru

We introduce new monolingual corpora for four indigenous and endangered languages from Peru: Shipibo-konibo, Ashaninka, Yanesha and Yine. Given the total absence of these languages in the web, the extraction and processing of texts from PDF files is relevant in a truly low-resource language scenario. Our procedure for monolingual corpus creation considers language-specific and language-agnostic steps, and focuses on educational PDF files with multilingual sentences, noisy pages and low-structured content. Through an evaluation based on language modelling and character-level perplexity on a subset of manually extracted sentences, we determine that our method allows the creation of clean corpora for the four languages, a key resource for natural language processing tasks nowadays.

Language identification is an elemental task in natural language processing, where corpus-based methods reign the state-of-the-art results in multi-lingual setups. However, there is a need to extend this application to other scenarios with scarce data and multiple classes to face, analyzing which of the most well-known methods is the best fit. In this way, Peru offers a great challenge as a multi-cultural and linguistic country. Therefore, this study focuses in three steps: (1) to build from scratch a digital annotated corpus for 49 Peruvian indigenous languages and dialects, (2) to fit both standard and deep learning approaches for language identification, and (3) to statistically compare the results obtained. The standard model outperforms the deep learning one as it was expected, with 95.9% in average precision, and both corpus and model will be advantageous inputs for more complex ta...

Sleepiness could cause different accidents at work and in our daily lives. Activities such as driving a car, handling heavy machinery, being in charge of controlling a satellite or monitoring a nuclear plant, are activities that require short visual and motor reaction times. These reactions could be affected by sleepiness. The highest number of these accidents is related to vehicular accidents. WHO statistics show that 1.2 million people worldwide die every year due to road crashes, 50 million people are injured, and more than 3,000 people die daily from road traffic injuries. The primary objective of the present work is to develop a tool based on techniques of artificial intelligence and image processing that can detect states of sleepiness in people whose work needs the greatest attention-to avoid accidents. The idea is to develop an algorithm that can be executed on a computer and thr...

The main objective of this article is to present a synthesis of the various contributions that national and foreign researchers have made to the pre-Hispanic archaeology of the Chicama Valley, located in the Department of La Libertad, Peru. Through the analysis of the archaeological literature published to date, a balance and critical evaluation of current knowledge about the occupational history of the lower and middle Chicama valley. Finally, we outline new problems and working hypotheses for future archaeological investigations of this rich valley of the Peruvian north coast.

Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was adopted to assist alkaline-hydrogen peroxide pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse (SCB). In the following condition: 0.29 M of NaOH, 0.78% (v/v) of H2O2, 9.95 min of process time and 3 bar of inlet pressure, 95.4% of digestibility of cellulosic fraction was achieved. To take the best use of the pretreated biomass, the overall process was intensified by way of employing a packed bed flow-through column reactor and thus enabling to handle a high solid loading of 20%, thereby leading to cellulose and hemicellulose conversions to 74.7% and 75%, respectively. In the fermentation step, a bubble column reactor was introduced to maximize ethanol production from the pretreated SCB by Scheffersomyces stipitis NRRL-Y7124, resulting in 31.50 g/L of ethanol, 0.49 g/g of ethanol yield and 0.68 g/L.h of productivity. All this showed that our HC-assisted NaOH-H2...

Remote sensing is the technology that has enabled us to obtain information about the Earth's surface without directly contacting it. For this reason, currently, the Bolivian state has considered a list of interesting applications of remote sensing in the country, including the following: biodiversity and environment monitoring, mining and geology, epidemiology, agriculture, water resources and land use planning. The use of satellite images has become a great tool for epidemiology because with this technological advance we can determine the environment in which transmission occurs, the distribution of the disease and its evolution over time. In that context, one of the important diseases related to public health in Bolivia is Chagas disease, also known as South American Trypanosomiasis. Chagas is caused by a blood-sucking bug or Vinchuca, which causes serious intestinal and heart long ter...

«Conformidad» is a very old institution in the Spanish criminal procedure system, since it dates back to the 19th century. In recent decades it has experienced a notable increase in its application as a negotiated criminal justice mechanism, as a result of several modifications in the Law of Criminal Procedure that have sought to introduce more space for negotiation in said figure and encourage its use. However, as an unwanted effect, such modifications have made the already convoluted regulation of said institute more complex, which makes it difficult to understand its physiognomy. This paper examines the current state of «conformidad» in the Spanish Criminal Procedure Law. Its scope of application, its requirements, its content, its processing and its effects are reviewed in the ordinary procedure, in the abbreviated procedure and in the fast procedure. A critical analysis of «con...
