Original abstract: Discharge measurements, climate observations and hydrochemical samples gathered monthly (1998/99) in the Yanamarey and Uruashraju glacier-fed catchments of the Cordillera Blanca, Peru, permit an analysis of the glacier meltwater contribution to stream-flow. These glacier catchments feed the Río Santa, which discharges into the Pacific Ocean. Based on a water-balance computation, glacier melt contributes an estimated 35% of the average discharge from the catchments. For comparison, a volumetric end-member mixing model of oxygen isotopes shows glacier melt contributes 30–45% to the total annual discharge. Based on stream geochemistry, discharge from the Yanamarey glacier catchment provides 30% of the annual volume discharged from the Querococha watershed, which is <10% glacierized. By analogy, the larger Río Santa watershed, also <10% glacierized, receives at least 1...

Protected natural areas are spaces that have a valuable ecosystemic, genetic and biological heritage and in which cultural and ethnic diversity provides valuable traditional knowledge regarding their uses and properties. Managing these areas implies recognizing that they are multicultural spaces where actors with multiple interests converge; it also requires that not only be guaranteed that all those involved are represented in the management instances, but also that everyone has the necessary capacities to participate actively in the decision-making process. What are those capacities that allow the participation of all under equal conditions? The study identifies ten capacities, which are called “democratic capacities”; and it is analyzed if these are present in the actors involved in the management of the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca in the period 2015-...

La Blanca is a Terminal Classic period Mayan settlement, located in the Petén jungle of Guatemala. In the imposing rooms that form the Acropolis, there were found much of the stucco which formed the inner lining, even with traces of colour. Since these rooms were excavated, the stuccos have been affected by the water that rises by capillarity and the salts crystallization, both on the surface and in the stone support, which has caused serious pathologies such as laminations and material disintegration. For this reason, laboratory studies are being carried out with different lime mortars that can be used in the restoration with full guarantee. In this paper, the comparative results of stability against salts crystallization cycles on two kind of traditional lime mortars are presented, and the influence that organic additives have on the improvement of resistance is evaluated.

Enamel white spot lesions can result from early carious lesions, fluorosis, molar hypomineralization (MH), or trauma-induced hypomineralization. Histologically, these defects exhibit a reduction in the mineral phase and replacement by organic fluids. Such lesions can be managed using a minimally invasive approach with infiltrating resins. These low-viscosity resins can penetrate the lesion body by capillary action, restoring the enamel's natural translucency while simultaneously enhancing the mechanical strength of hypomineralized enamel. The technique involves superficial demineralization to allow access to the lesion through the application of 15% hydrochloric acid (HCl), followed by resin infiltration into the lesion body. Depending on the etiology, extent, and depth of the lesion, the erosion-infiltration protocol may not always be sufficient and might need to be complemented with ot...

The dental microabrasion treatment is an effective and conservative procedure against enamel surface defects. The white spots appear frequently in children because inactive enamel caries, hypoplasia and fluorosis. When these spots affect anterior teeth produce an aesthetic effect. We describe two cases of enamel microabrasion of the upper incisors for both cases using 37 % H3PO4 and a mechanical technique (micromotor) in a 7 year old child with enamel hypoplasia and a 7 year old boy with inactive enamel caries. The aim of study was to compare affectivity of enamel microabrasion with 37% H3PO4 and pumice using different gadgets for this mechanical technique. After the first microabrasion session, the best result was the one using resin polishing burs and home made acrylic pads respect to the group which use rubber points, but these differences did not longer appeared in the afterward sess...

The Cordillera Blanca, located in the central zone of the Andes Mountains in Peru, has shown a retreat in its glaciers. This paper presents a trend analysis of the glacier area over the groups of Nevados Caullaraju-Pastoruri from 1975 to 2010 using Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. In the case of the Nevados Pastoruri/Tuco, the study period was extended back to 1957 by using an aerial photograph taken that year. The extent of clean glacier ice was estimated using Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) thresholds. Moreover, the estimation of debris-covered glacier ice was retrieved by means of a decision tree classification method using NDSI, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST). Area estimations derived from Landsat imagery were compared to the glacier ground-truth data in 1975 and 2010. Results show a statistically significant (p < 0.05...

Mountain cities specializing in tourism increasingly aim at valorizing cultural and natural heritage to compete for global attention. In this context, the postmodern urbanization of mountains plays a decisive role: driven by touristification processes, it alters the sociospatial and economic configuration of mountain cities and their hinterlands, which are becoming vertically arranged “operational landscapes”, and profoundly changes city–mountain interactions. To foster sustainable development in urbanizing mountain destinations, it is crucial to understand these settlements’ embeddedness in both (1) nature and culture and (2) space and time. The Andean city of Huaraz is a case in point: an intermediate center in highland Peru, it is characterized by a strategic location in the Callejón de Huaylas (Santa Valley), influenced by Hispanic and Quechua culture and dominated by the gl...

Cervical trauma by sharp weapon is rare; however, due to the great clinical interest, it can lead to very important complications, such as asphyxia, massive hemorrhage and even death, especially because 10% of traumatic injuries affect the cervical region (zone 1), which, because it contains important organs and vascular bundles, has a mortality rate of 1 to 7%. Thus, we present the clinical case of a 90-year-old female patient with senile dementia, a clinical picture of 1 hour of evolution, with a wound in the right cervical region by a sharp object, with bleeding and local pain, apparently due to self-injury. The patient underwent surgery to remove the sharp object and was managed in the intensive care unit (ICU) for monitoring, presenting an optimal evolution and discharged on the third day; she was subsequently discharged home in good general condition.
