Between 2004 and 2014 the Peruvian economy experienced a noticeable growth which surpassed most of Latin American countries during that period, leading some to quote this episode as the Peruvian Growth Miracle. Yet, growth of wages would not have been accompanied by an equally marked reduction in wage differentials between men and women despite government efforts to address this issue. Consequently, this study analyzes and decomposes the gender wage gap in Peru for 2004 and 2014 using the Machado and Mata (2005) decomposition method correcting for sample selection bias in the context of quantile regression (Albrecht et al. 2009). This allows to decompose the differential in terms of the endowment and treatment effect at each point of the income distribution instead of, as has been customary in previous studies for Peru, only at the average of the distribution. Using data from the Nationa...

Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) is one of the most common complications of orthodontic treatment. Historically, only radiographic methods were available, while offering ease of use and accessibility, many limitations exist. Problems of technique, standardization, limited points of view and radiation exposure remain. Resorption can only be detected after a significant portion of the root has been lost (60% to70% mineralized tissue). Moreover, these methods are static and cannot indicate if the process of root resorption has arrested or is ongoing. Recently, oral fluids have been used as a tool for the diagnosis and monitoring of oral and systemic diseases through the detection of biomarkers. The purpose of this review is to describe the scientific evidence related to the prevalence, etiology, the traditional diagnostic methods and the advances in the detection...

Several kinds of emerging technology have begun to be applied to food processes as prospective alternatives to conventional methods. Among these, ultrasound has been used. Despite the vast literature on the subject, some important aspects, including the sensory and hedonic perception of consumers towards this technology have not been properly addressed. In this study, consumer attitudes toward expected acceptance, pricing and purchase intention of guava juice processed with ultrasound technology were analyzed by using the conjoint analysis. The holistic perception of guava juice using projective mapping was also evaluated. The results indicate that consumers have greater acceptance and purchase intention for products that inform them of the benefits of the ultrasound process, while purchase intention was mainly influenced by the lowest price. Moreover, the product information regar...

Despite the long-standing cultural importance and botanical interest in Vanilla, many taxa belonging to the genus remain poorly understood. Vanilla species generally have broad geographical and ecological distributions. Most species are found in multiple countries, while local endemics are rare. Many names proposed in the eighteen and nineteenth centuries remain cryptic and unused despite having priority over more recently proposed names. Relatively few Vanilla species have been well-documented, both locally and across their entire distribution range, while a signifcant portion of novelties have been proposed on the basis of very few specimens that are compared only with local foras. After careful inspection of the type materials, living plants, botanical illustrations, photographs and hundreds of additional herbarium specimens of Vanilla we tentatively recognize 62 species for the Neotr...

The paper presents the preliminary results of an international research project undertaken in Brazil, India, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand and Venezuela on whether and to what extent flexible automation (FA) has diffused lo developing countries, and what its impact has been on product, plant and firm scale and scope. It shows that while diffusion has been rapid in the countries under study, particularly in the case of computer-numerically- controlled (CNC) machine tools, it was far slower than in developed countries. The paper analyses firm data on product scale and concludes that flexible automation does not necessarily lead to reductions in product scale and increases in product variety or scope. While there has been an increase in the 'variety' of goods produced this has often been the result of the availability of a wider range of sizes in goods and due to vertical integration into the pr...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen, mainly affecting severe patients, such as those in intensive care units (ICUs). High levels of antibiotic resistance and a long battery of virulence factors characterise this pathogen. Among virulence factors, the T3SS (Type 3 Secretion Systems) are especially relevant, being one of the most important virulence factors in P. aeruginosa. T3SS are a complex “molecular syringe” able to inject different effectors in host cells, subverting cell machinery influencing immune responses, and increasing bacterial survival rates. While T3SS have been largely studied and the molecular structure and main effector functions have been established, a series of questions and further points remain to be clarified or established. The key role of T3SS in P. aeruginosa virulence has resulted in the search for T3SS-targeting molecules able to impair the...

As a professor of Parasitology and Invertebrate Biology at a small, private liberal arts college in the United States, where I study the transmission ecology of trematode parasites, to date my research experience studying helminths in the Neotropical region has been limited. Of course, many parasitologists in North America and elsewhere have relatively limited exposure to neotropical helminthology beyond textbooks and the primary literature; however, based on my own experience over the last year I believe there exists great opportunity for this to change. The potential for wonderful and productive collaborations continues to increase with greater ease of travel and levels of cooperation and information-sharing. So, while by definition my own experience in Peru is unique to me, I hope that it highlights some of the opportunities for research in helminthology in Peru and thus encourages ad...

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is a newly emerging disease of penaeid shrimps caused by a unique strain of Vibrio species that carries a plasmid harboring PirABVp-binary toxin gene. Since the first outbreak in 2009, the diseases have been reported in a number of countries in Asia, America, and Latin America. In the present study, we obtained 51 bacterial isolates recovered from five AHPND suspected shrimp farms in South America for PCR diagnosis using AP4 nested PCR method. There were 3/51 isolates (34, 36 and 43) from two farms which tested positive by AP4 primers targeting PirABVp toxin genes. The detection results were also confirmed by duplex pirABVp PCR assay. Subsequently, integrity of full length pirABVp genes in the three positive isolates was revealed by sequencing analysis. Bacterial species identification by ldh-specific PCR combined with multilocus sequencing...

Texture is an important visual property which has been largely employed for image characterization. Recently, Convolutional Networks has been the predominant approach on Computer Vision, and their application on texture analysis shows interesting results. However, their popularity steers around object recognition, and several convolutional architectures have been proposed and trained for this task. Therefore, this works evaluates 17 of the most diffused Deep Convolutional Neural Networks when employed for texture analysis as feature extractors. Image descriptors are obtained through Global Average Pooling over the output of the last convolutional layer of networks with random weights or learned from the ImageNet dataset. The analysis is performed under 6 texture datasets and using 3 different supervised classifiers (KNN, LDA, and SVM). Results using networks with random weights indicates...

The aim of this thesis is to set-up and put in operation a magnetron for targets of 2” diameter in order to produce metal-diamond like carbon (Me-DLC) films using the technique of magnetron sputtering. For this thesis were used targets of silver (Ag) and chromium (Cr) with 99.99% purity. Ag-DLC and Cr-DLC films have been deposited onto 2” diameter silicon wafers. The internal stress and the hardness of the films have been measured using the wafer curvature method and nanoindentation, respectively. The morphology and thickness of the films were measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composition and chemical structure were measured by Auger and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The results for the Ag-DLC films show that the conditions to obtain a high hardness are associated to changes in their chemical composition product of the application of a bias voltage to the substr...

Background Correlation network analysis has become an integral tool to study metabolite datasets. Networks are constructed by omitting correlations between metabolites based on two thresholds—namely the r and the associated p-values. While p-value threshold settings follow the rules of multiple hypotheses testing correction, guidelines for r-value threshold settings have not been defined. Results Here, we introduce a method that allows determining the r-value threshold based on an iterative approach, where different networks are constructed and their network topology is monitored. Once the network topology changes significantly, the threshold is set to the corresponding correlation coefficient value. The approach was exemplified on: (i) a metabolite and morphological trait dataset from a potato association panel, which was grown under normal irrigation and water recovery conditions; an...

Populism has been a phenomenon widely studied in Latin America. However, his analysis has been focused on the implications that it has for democracy. In contrast, little inquiry has been conducted about the unknown effects on the democratic conceptions of the population. This research investigates how citizen attitudes are affected in relation to the political system when there is a constant undermining of democratic institutions by populist politicians? In that sense, the cases of Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia are analyzed based on data from the Barometer of the Americas that allow examining the degree of democratic legitimacy in these countries during the governments of Hugo Chavez, Rafael Correa and Evo Morales, who are considered "politicians with populist features". It is concluded that, although the arrival of populist politicians in Latin America during the first decade of the mi...

The objective of this article is to offer those responsible for the Peruvian health rectorship reflections on sectoral policy derived from the study of the country’s National Health Accounts (1995-2014). While it is true that the country has increased its spending on health from 4.4 to 5.2% of GDP, 33% of its total funding comes from household «out of pocket expense», which indicates that change is necessary. Problems in the responsiveness of the health system to greater funding and public expenditure, linked to issues of rectorship and service organization, are apparent.Although there has been an increase in numbers of people with insurance, the restrictions on what is covered prevent the great majority of these people accessing health services. The most important change in the public administration of expenditure has been decentralization, while in the private administration it has...
