Located in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, the Doñana salt marshes occupy around half of Doñana National Park and are currently considered among the most important wetlands worldwide due to the importance of their ecosystem. In this research work, using a novel patented procedure, the effects of climate change on the study area between 2009 and 2020 were evaluated. For this reason, DEMs were downloaded from the 30-meter Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Furthermore, to check the depth of the flooded area, 792 satellite images (L5 TM, L7 ETM+, and L8 OLI) with a resolution of 30 m were analyzed. The results show how the combined use of geomatic techniques, such as radar, optical, and geographic information system (GIS) data, along with regression models and iterative processes, plays a key role in the prediction and analysis of the flooded area volume in the Doñana salt mars...

The climatologically changes that involve the global heating, have produced in the last decades a great reduction of glacial areas on earth, and this is evidenced by the glacial back stripping The area of study is situated into a seismotectonic zone where an intercordilleran segment has a Cordillera Blanca’s glaciers, that produces a lot of ice2 s falls, moraines landslides and great rocks. These materials fall in to glacial lakes and produce a violent damage. Huaraz city is in the Quilcay2 s alluvial fan, and consists of the fluvial-alluvial sediments Historically in Huaraz have been reported events like landslides that evidence the risk factor and increase the vulnerability of the zone due to deglatiation and lacustrine phenomena’s of Palcarraju mountain and Palcacocha lake. For the mitigation of the risk we are showing some instructions that must be diffused to the most of the peo...

Purpose In order to assess the impact of anthropogenic activities on carbon and nutrient accumulation, total organic carbon (TOC), nitrogen (TN), and phosphorus (TP) accumulation rates were examined in a Pb-210-dated mangrove sediment core from Sepetiba Bay, Brazil, a coastal region impacted by multiple environmental changes during the previous century. Materials and methods A 50-cm length sediment core was collected from a mangrove forest in Sepetiba Bay. Sediment subsamples were analyzed to measure TOC, TN, delta C-13, and delta N-15 using an elemental analyzer attached to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer Thermo Finnigan Model Delta Plus XP, whereas colorimetric analysis were used to measure TP. For (210)Pbex analyses, gamma-ray measurements were performed in a semiplanar intrinsic germanium high purity coaxial detector, coupled to a multichannel analyzer, whereas the sediment accumu...

The dry forests of northern Peru, in the regions of Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, and La Libertad, have experienced significant changes as a result of deforestation and changes in land use, leading to the loss of biodiversity and resources. This work analyzed for the first time the changes in vegetation cover and land use of the Pómac Forest Historical Sanctuary (PFHS), located in the department of Lambayeque (northern Peru). The employed approach was the random forest algorithm and visually interpreted Landsat satellite images for the periods 2000–2002, 2002–2004, and 2004–2008. Gain and loss rates were computed for each period, and the recovery process was assessed using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). Results indicate an expansion of agricultural land during each period, resulting in the deforestation of 102.6 hectares of dens...

Climate changes that affect our planet nowadays, will lead us to approach to what is happening with the mountain glacial of our country, characterized by its fragility. The Cordillera Blanca is one of the most important glacial areas of our country. Most of the monitoring activities have been carried out on the field where many times a lot of obstacles to collect information are found. In this way, Geomatics, by means of Remote Sensing, helps us to conduct with greater ease the monitoring tasks, using satellite images to determine the melting area of the glaciers. For the study, political boundaries of Huaraz and Independencia districts, as well as the use of several satellite images of 1989, 1998 and 2005 have been considered as references, which help us analyse the behaviour of glacial regression in a period of 16 years and forecast such behaviour by 25 years (2014).

Irma, the great hurricane that hit the Caribbean and Florida, brings to mind -again- an uncomfortable truth: Climate Change, undeniable beyond the speeches made from power and ignorance. Increasing and more destructive natural phenomena shake the world. Floods and droughts, extreme cold and heat, monumental forest fires, as well as the recent hurricanes, are daily news in all corners of the planet. According to a vast majority of scientists, these natural phenomena - the climatic horsemen of the apocalypse - are the global consequence of rising temperatures and extreme climatic variations. For most of the countries of Latin America and the global South, the processes of adaptation to global climate change acquire fundamental relevance because the survival of thousands of peoples and communities depends on this adjustment. The people with the greatest losses related to climate change belo...

In recent times, the risks of disasters caused by natural events have increased as a result of climate change. The magnitude of a disaster resulting from the impact of a natural hazard on a human system depends not only on the type and intensity of the hazard, but also on the socioeconomic conditions of the community. The objective of this research was to determine the level of socioeconomic vulnerability to natural disasters in the urban area of the city of Puno, in the High Andean region of southern Peru. This was achieved by using the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) technique in combination with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to a random sample of 256 people. Vulnerability data was collected for five different types of hazards to which the population is exposed: floods, erosion, rockfall, landslides, and unstable soils. Fourteen...
