“Cotton is the most widely used natural fiber for textiles; however, the capacity of cotton fibers to absorb large amounts of moisture, retain oxygen, and have a high specific surface area makes them more prone to microbial contamination, becoming an appropriate medium for the growth of bacteria and fungi. In recent years, the incorporation of silver nanoparticles in textile products has been widely used due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and low toxicity towards mammalian cells. The aim of the current study is to continue the assessment of our developed nanocomposite and evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activity of the nanocomposite based on silver nanoparticles and carboxymethyl chitosan (AgNPs-CMC) against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans, evaluated by the well diffusion method. The antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. a...

A neural network is a mathematical model that is able to perform a task automatically or semi-automatically after learning the human knowledge that we provided. Moreover, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a type of sophisticated neural network that has shown to efficiently learn tasks related to the area of image analysis (among other areas). One example of these tasks is image segmentation, which aims to find regions or separable objects within an image. A more specific type of segmentation called semantic segmentation, makes sure that each region has a semantic meaning by giving it a label or class. Since neural networks can automate the task of semantic segmentation of images, they have been very useful for the medical area, applying them to the segmentation of organs or abnormalities (tumors). Therefore, this thesis project seeks to address the task of semantic segmentation of ...

Edible films for packaging and plastic material replacement purposes are produced based on biodegradable raw materials such as polysaccharides and agents with biological properties, making the final product an alternative for the protection and extension of the shelf life of foods. The main objective of the present research was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of chitosan biofilms functionalized with muña essential oil. For this purpose, 12 edible films were formulated with 3 concentrations of chitosan (1, 2 and 3%) and 3 of essential oil (0.5, 2 and 5%) including chitosan-only blanks. The antioxidant activity evaluated in biofilms with a higher content of muña essential oil presents more than 60% of DPPH free radical uptake, while in the antimicrobial activity evaluated by petri dishes grown with Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli...

The Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) is the total amount of solar energy present per square unit every moment beyond the atmosphere, so it's changing every time along the year, although for many practical purposes its average is taken and has been called: The Solar Constant (1367 W/m2). In this paper, the historical efforts made to quantifcate the TSI are reviewed, the latest advances in this matter are presented and a new method to calculate its monthly average based on the SunSpot Number is proposed to apporach to its value as close as 0.05. W/m2 (RMS = 0.002).

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability, with most of its burden now affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). People in rural areas of LMIC who have a stroke receive very little acute stroke care and local healthcare workers and family caregivers in these regions lack the necessary knowledge to assist them. Intriguingly, a recent rapid growth in cell-phone use and digital technology in rural areas has not yet been appropriately exploited for health care training and delivery purposes. What should be done in rural areas, at the community setting-level, where access to healthcare is limited remains a challenge. We review the evidence on improving post-stroke outcomes including lowering the risks of functional disability, stroke recurrence, and mortality, and propose some approaches, to target post-stroke care and rehabilitation, noting key challenges in designing suitable...

In the competition of the lighting market, LED technology has stood out for excellent characteristics, one of which is the possibility of dimming, compared to other technologies. The dimming capacity allows to find the comfort zone with respect to two parameters, illuminance and correlated colour temperature (CCT). The present work provides a methodology to find comfort with respect to two variables, the level of illumination and the CCT. A controller with a simple structure, supported by Arduino, is proposed to control the above-mentioned variables of LEDs. The LEDs are located on a tape attached to a heat sink. In addition, the use of a light box as an environment for analysis is proposed. The design of this cubicle is based on literature. The controller has the possibility to regulate 12 different channels and the linearity between the PWM output and the illuminance was verified. The ...

This study shows the results of the Differential Item Functioning (DIF) detection analysis of the items of the Ser Bachiller assessment of the Costa cycle, which was applied in 2020 to high school graduates and applicants to public universities in Ecuador. The Mantel-Haenszel method, a well-known method used by the Educational Testing Service, was used. The presence of DIF was explored based on four axes of analysis: sex of the subject, area of settlement, ethnic self-identification group and type of schooling. It is concluded that the items of the Ser bachiller Costa 2020 are not affected by differential functioning. This supports the hypothesis that the test items applied by Ineval do not favor or disadvantage certain specific population groups, so the different population groups evaluated are not affected in any way by the design of the Ser Bachiller assessment.

The relationship between executive functions (EF), creative personality, and academic performance in Argentine university students was examined. A total of 248 students (M = 22.97 years, SD = 4.43) from various Argentine provinces participated. The Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI), the Cognitive Flexibility Scale, the Creative Behavior Scale (ECC), and the Creative Personality Scale (EPC) were used, along with academic performance data and sociodemographic information. Data were collected online through Google Forms and analyzed using Spearman correlations and mediation analysis with robust Maximum Likelihood estimator and Bootstrap. Cognitive flexibility exhibited the most robust correlation with grade point average (r = .281, p < .001), followed by working memory difficulties (r = -.234, p < .001). Creative personality correlated positively with grade point average (...
